Man jailed for image manipulation of Ramaphosa, Cele
The NPA has sent a strong message that cyber abuse and the non-consensual manipulation of intimate images will not be tolerated, following the sentencing of a KZN man to five years of direct imprisonment.
Scebi Thabiso Nene was sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court after pleading guilty to cyber forgery, cyber uttering, and disclosing intimate image data.
His crimes included distributing manipulated pornographic images bearing the faces of President Cyril Ramaphosa, former Police Minister Bheki Cele, and former National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole.
According to NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, 'This created a false impression that the images were the authentic images of the complainants. Nene then disseminated these manipulated images.'
The court heard that between September 2022 and May 2023, Nene sourced and altered images to create the false and damaging material. His actions have been classified by the NPA as a form of digital abuse – targeting prominent figures with doctored explicit content.
The NPA's decision to pursue custodial sentencing marks a growing trend in taking a firm stance against online harassment and image-based offences, particularly those intended to humiliate or defame.
In mitigation, Nene claimed he had become mentally distressed during his time working at Coca-Cola between 2018 and 2019. He told the court he believed he was being followed and made several attempts to seek help from various police stations, the Hawks, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid). He said his concerns were dismissed, which he claimed contributed to his mental state and actions.
Despite expressing remorse and telling the court he regretted his actions, the court handed down a sentence of five years for cyber forgery and three years each for cyber uttering and disclosing intimate image data. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective five-year term behind bars.
The NPA welcomed the judgment, reinforcing its intent to treat cyber harassment and the abuse of intimate image data with the seriousness it deserves.

Sibusiso Ncengwa, the fourth accused in the murder trial of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, has pleaded guilty. Ncengwa, Sbonelo Myeza, Mlungisi Ncalane and Mbulelo Mpofana are all charged with the murder of Magaqa. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Ncalane was subsequently declared unfit to stand trial and is currently admitted to a psychiatric facility. Guilty plea Ramkisson-Kara said on 25 April 2023, four men were charged with the murder of Magaqa, and all pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. 'On 22 May 2025, Sibusiso Ncengwa (Accused 4) advised the court of his intention to plead guilty or make admissions in terms of Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1997. He also made an application for a separation of trials from his co-accused.' Ramkisson-Kara said the state opposed this application, and the case was remanded to 06 June 2025 for Ncengwa to make the Section 220 admissions. Attempted murder Ramkisson-Kara added that Ncengwa also admitted to the attempted murder of Jabulile Msiya, Nonsikelelo Mafa and Nceba Mazongolo. 'Ncengwa further admitted to malicious damage to property (the vehicles of Magaqa and others) and the joint unlawful possession of a firearm. 'In his admissions, Ncengwa outlined in detail the events leading up to Magaqa's death and the interactions he had with his co-accused, namely Myeza, Ncalane, and Mpofana. His admissions were accepted by the state, and these admissions amounted to a plea of guilty,' Ramkisson-Kara said. Sentencing Ramkisson-Kara said the court found Ncengwa guilty based on his admissions and convicted him accordingly. 'The case against Ncengwa was remanded to 30 June 2025 for sentencing. The case against Myeza and Mpofana will return to court on 19 June 2025 for a new indictment to be served on them as their matter has now been separated from that of accused 4 (Ncengwa).' Magaqa was shot in July 2017 and succumbed to his injuries after spending time in the hospital. The state has thus far presented evidence from eight witnesses. Political parties demand Batohi's accountability amid NPA sabotage allegations

Image: Henk Kruger National prosecutions boss Shamila Batohi is facing renewed criticism from several parties, including the EFF, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party and ActionSA, over her recent statements about sabotage within the NPA. Last week Batohi, responding to criticism over several embarrassing defeats in high-profile cases said there had been "infiltration" of the prosecution service, but later backtracked, saying she had used the wrong term and instead that certain cases were being deliberately sabotaged. Despite the backtracking by Batohi, the parties remain unconvinced and are demanding accountability, saying if there is sabotage then this happened under her watch and she should take responsibility by stepping down. The MK Party on Monday expressed concern over Batohi's statements, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability within the NPA. 'We are the first ones to call for her (Batohi) head. Next Stay Close ✕ Last week the EFF wrote to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent debate on what it believes is an institutional crisis at the NPA. This comes after the NPA was dealt a major blow in the case against former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule when the court ruled that the extradition from the US of his former PA, Moroadi Colota, was invalid. The NPA has also been slammed for bungling the case against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, who was acquitted on more than 30 charges of sexual assault. The NPA's failure to secure the extradition of the Gupta brothers, nearly a decade after the Gupta Leaks scandal, has also raised questions about the authority's effectiveness. The EFF said Batohi's remarks suggest undue influence is being exerted on the NPA, compromising its ability to secure justice and accountability. "This is not a casual institutional complaint. It is a constitutional red flag of the highest order," the EFF said. "An assertion from the NDPP herself that the NPA has been infiltrated should send shockwaves throughout every organ of state," the letter read. ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip called for Batohi's immediate removal, citing the NPA's repeated failures in high-profile cases. "The NPA has become a refuge for politically connected individuals, a place where accountability is avoided, justice is delayed, and prosecutions collapse with shocking regularity. "Under Batohi's leadership, the NPA reels from one scandal to the next. South Africans are left wondering if these failures are merely a result of incompetence, or is there a deliberate agenda to protect the corrupt,' Trollip said. NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga did not answer questions on Monday. Batohi had said that if she felt she was underperforming, then she would step down immediately. The DA has also expressed concerns about the NPA's failures but has stopped short of calling for Batohi's removal. Instead, the party wants Batohi to explain the failures. The DA last week announced a reform package aimed at rescuing the NPA and restoring justice for victims of corruption. According to the DA, the NPA is currently "broken" and has failed to secure successful prosecutions in high-profile corruption cases. To address these issues, the DA's Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development, Glynnis Breytenbach, proposes a series of reforms.

River Park without electricity after clash with City Power technicians
City Power cut off the electricity supply to River Park in Alexandra, plunging the entire community into darkness. This comes after community members resisted City Power's scheduled meter audit and disconnection operation in the area on May 28. Read more: River Park residents resist City Powers cut-off operation The utility's spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that their cut-off operation, which was held in collaboration with the police, JMPD and contracted security personnel, targeted 470 households with zero recorded electricity purchases, and 367 customers with low vending patterns, 'indicative of meter tampering.' However, their scheduled operation was met with resistance when angry residents staged a protest, threatening and nearly holding their team hostage. Mangena noted that as tensions escalated, they had to swiftly withdraw the operation and resorted to disconnecting the whole area. 'We have repeatedly cautioned River Park residents that continued defiance, interference, and resistance to lawful operations would result in a total supply disconnection,' he said. 'However, those warnings have been met with contempt. Today's actions have forced us to act decisively.' Mangena said it was not the first time River Park residents had acted 'unlawfully and aggressively.' He added it occurred on May 28, when residents staged a protest at the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre after the utility disconnected nine properties found to have connected illegally to the grid. He said that earlier this year, individuals masquerading as community representatives had violently disrupted their smart meter rollout operation. They also stressed that City Power was in breach of the agreement they had on May 28, that the utility would not cut off their electricity at least until June 9, when City Power technicians come to normalise the meters in the area. City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava said that the utility had a contractual relationship with verified individual account holders, not a group of people who they couldn't ascertain if they were customers or not. 'We urge those registered customers who have been affected by the power supply cut-off to visit our SDC on an individual basis so that we can resolve their queries separately. All others will remain disconnected until they allow us to audit and normalise meters in the area,' she noted.
