Edgenta Eyes Recovery As International Wins Set To Offset Q1 Challenges

Barnama7 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- UEM Edgenta Berhad ('UEM Edgenta'), a regional leader in Asset Management and Infrastructure Solutions, today announced its unaudited financial results for the first quarter ended 31 March 2025 ('Q1 FY2025'), reporting a Loss Before Tax (LBT) of RM11.8 million, compared to a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of RM19.6 million in the same period last year. Revenue stood at RM646.1 million, a 4.6% decrease from RM677.6 million in Q1 FY2024. The performance was primarily affected by higher operational costs, particularly in manpower, as well as the completion of several one-off contracts and cyclical factors.
Despite these headwinds, UEM Edgenta is seeing positive momentum from its international operations, which are expected to support performance moving forward. The Group's operations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE achieved a strong 24% year-on-year revenue growth, driven by effective integration efforts and the scaling of newly acquired entities. In Singapore, new contract wins amounting to RM462.8 million within the Healthcare Solutions division contributed to an encouraging orderbook, while additional wins in Taiwan (RM328.7 million) are also supporting the Group's efforts

HASiL Ramps Up International Efforts To Tackle Tax Evasion

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- The Inland Revenue Board (HASiL) is stepping up its global cooperation to track down taxpayers who fail to comply, including those transferring assets or income overseas. Its Intelligence and Profiling Department director Muhammad Azhari Tamrin @ Thamrin told Bernama Radio that the agency is harnessing international tools, such as the Exchange of Information (EOI) and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), to access financial data shared by foreign authorities. 'Tax evaders are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They shift profits offshore, set up offshore companies and use international bank accounts. These are tactics that conventional methods struggle to detect,' he said. In response, HASiL has taken proactive steps by deepening partnerships with tax authorities abroad to share information and trace these financial footprints more effectively. Speaking on the radio programme POV: Perspektif Bukan Persepsi, hosted by Kamal Affandi Hashim and focused on tax evasion, Muhammad Azhari explained that Malaysia's participation in the Forum on Tax Administration and the ASEAN network has helped it adopt best practices and strengthen its capacity through big data analytics and risk profiling. Alongside enforcement efforts, HASiL has also rolled out public education campaigns and adopted a 'Compliance Before Enforcement' approach to encourage voluntary tax compliance. Social media, he added, is an increasingly valuable resource in uncovering suspicious financial activity. 'We analyse lifestyles displayed online and compare them with declared incomes, looking out for undeclared businesses, hidden assets and social or business networks,' he noted. Where discrepancies emerge, he said HASiL will conduct audits and investigations, actions that are targeted and data-driven rather than arbitrary. Muhammad Azhari also urged the public to act as watchdogs, encouraging them to report individuals or companies that live beyond their declared means or operate without proper registration.

Anwar congratulates S. Korea president on election win

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as the president of South Korea. He said the victory marked a turning point for South Korea, a nation that had emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve. 'The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions and of national purpose. 'I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations in trade and technology and in peace and security, as well as the enduring ties between our peoples,' Anwar said in a Facebook post yesterday. Malaysia–South Korea relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in November last year, a milestone reflecting shared ambitions. Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of Asean for 2025, hoped the regional bloc would play a greater role in South Korea's regional outlook, Bernama reported. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec). 'As Chairs of Asean and Apec in 2025 respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives. 'In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between South-East Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,' Anwar said. He also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead. He said he looked forward to meeting Lee in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean Summit and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting later that month. Lee officially began his five-year term yesterday after the National Election Commission confirmed his victory during a plenary session. The liberal Democratic Party candidate won with 49.42% of the vote, defeating Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15%.

Ringgit eases against the greenback

At 6pm, the local note edged lower to 4.2435/2490 versus the US dollar. KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit eased against the greenback at the close yester day after the United States posted stronger economic data. At 6pm, the local note edged lower to 4.2435/2490 versus the US dollar from Tuesday's close of 4.2425/2485. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd's chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said stronger-than-expected US job openings in April lifted optimism about the American economy's resilience and helped lift the dollar. US job openings rose 191,000 to 7.391 million by the last day of April, beating a forecast of 7.10 million vacancies. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said traders were showing increasing interest in US assets, easing short-term pressure on the dollar. — Bernama
