Cops inspect 1,300 motorcycles in crackdown on illegal street racing in KL
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,300 motorcycles were inspected during Ops Samseng Jalanan conducted by the police across several hotspots in the federal capital on Friday (May 16) night.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the operation aimed to reduce road accidents and address complaints from hotel owners about noisy motorcycles disturbing their guests at night.
The operation, which began at 9pm, covered several areas including Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Bukit Bintang and the Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE).
"We detected various offences including illegal modifications, riding without a licence, and expired road tax. Some riders even attempted to flee by riding against traffic to avoid the roadblocks," he said, adding that such actions could embarrass the country, especially with the Asean Summit approaching.
The overnight operation ended at 4.30am with the police issuing 1,006 summonses, while the Road Transport Department (JPJ), which joined the operation, issued 206. A total of 55 motorcycles and one car were also seized.
A Bernama check at the roadblock in Jalan Ampang observed several riders attempting to escape inspection by riding against traffic, but they were swiftly intercepted by motorcycle patrol units. — Bernama

Gerik bus crash: Taskforce established to investigate Gerik bus accident
GERIK: The police will set up a taskforce to probe the recent road accident involving a bus and another vehicle here, says Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri. The Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director stated that the investigation team would be formed in collaboration with other technical teams. The team will include officers from the Road Transport Department, Land Public Transport Agency, Puspakom, Health Ministry, and Public Works Department. "We will set up a special technical team to assist in the investigation and complete the investigation paper as soon as possible so we can bring the driver to court. "I advise the public, if you have any information about this incident, please come forward to the police or relevant authorities to assist with the investigation. "Please do not just spread it on social media, as this will only add confusion and hinder our investigation," he told reporters at the Gerik hospital on Monday (June 9). When asked if the bus driver had any previous road traffic offences, Mohd Yusri said they were still at the initial stage of the investigation. "I can only say for now that we will complete the investigation paper and look into the matter thoroughly from all angles, so we can expedite the prosecution process in court smoothly and properly. "The team will try to obtain all relevant reports on the bus, its condition, the driver, and so on. That's all the information I can provide for now," he added. Mohd Yusri also urged the public to be more cautious while driving, especially during this festive period. "Today is the final day of Ops Lancar, and we want to ensure the safety of everyone returning home to arrive safely at their destinations or homes," he added.
