Cuvet and Galvin hit HRs to help Miami beat Alabama 5-3 at Hattiesburg Regional

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Daniel Cuvet hit a three-run home run in the first inning, Max Galvin added a solo shot in the fifth and No. 3 seed Miami beat Alabama 5-3 in the opening game of the Hattiesburg Regional on Friday.
Miami (32-24) plays either top-seeded Southern Miss or Columbia on Saturday. No. 2 seed Alabama (41-17) takes on the other in a loser-out game.
Jake Ogden walked to lead off the game and Galvin followed with a single before Cuvet hit a 3-0 pitch over the wall in right field and the Hurricanes led the rest of the way.
Cuvet led off the third with a double and scored on a two-out single by Renzo Gonzalez to make it 4-0.
Kade Snell was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and scored for Alabama when Brady Neal grounded out with the bases loaded. Brennen Norton followed with a two-RBI double to cut the Crimson Tide's deficit to 4-3.
AJ Ciscar (6-1) gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings. Brian Walters pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his ninth save of the season.
Bryce Fowler fouled off seven straight pitches before he reached on an error with two out in the ninth and moved to second when Justin Lebron was hit by a pitch but Walters got Snell to fly out to end the game.
Riley Quick (8-3) pitched six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Dorian Gonzalez Jr. hit a grand slam, a three-run home run and finished with eight RBIs, Griffin Hugus pitched a complete game and No. 3 seed Miami beat Columbia 14-1 at the Hattiesburg Regional on Saturday night. Hugus (6-7) allowed a run on eight hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Miami (33-24) advanced to the championship round and awaits the winner of a loser-out game between Columbia and host Southern Miss, which the fourth-seeded Tigers beat 11-4 in the opening round on Friday. Both the No. 4 national seed Golden Eagles and Columbia would have to beat the Hurricanes twice to win the double-elimination regional. Daniel Cuvet opened the scoring with a two-RBI double off Columbia starter Thomas Santana (5-4) in the first inning. The sophomore has 81 RBIs this season, just the sixth player in program history with at least 80 in a single season. Max Galvin had three hits, including a double and a home run, two RBIs and scored three runs for the Hurricanes.

Ethan Hedges cracks 2 solo home runs and USC closes in on super regional berth
Associated Press CORVALLIS, Oregon (AP) — Ethan Hedges hit two solo home runs and USC defeated Saint Mary's 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the championship round of the Corvallis Regional. Hedges gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead with a one-out home run in the bottom of the first inning. Saint Mary's went ahead on a two-run home run by Diego Castellanos in the second inning. The Gaels made it 3-1 when Aide Taurek homered to lead off the fourth. USC tied it in the bottom of the inning when Augie Lopez blasted a two-run homer to right-center field and Hedges' one-out homer in the fifth gave the Trojans the lead for good. Richard Tejeda delivered an RBI single in the sixth for a 5-3 lead. Cody Kashimoto's sacrifice fly in the eighth got the Gaels within 5-4 but Maximo Martinez got the run back for USC with an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning. USC's Caden Hunter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season. Starter Mason Edwards (3-0) got the win, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. John Damozonio (4-3) took the loss for Saint Mary's (36-25). USC (37-21) advances to the championship round, a win away from the super regionals.
