Jekyll Island revitalizes historic district

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — Historic Pier Road on Jekyll Island is ready for its closeup.
The Jekyll Island Authority has announced the opening of The District Shops. This shopping and dining destination in the heart of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District was nearly two years in the making. It features eight new places for visitors and locals to shop, sip and savor everything Jekyll has to offer.
During its 'gilded age,' the area was originally home to buildings and trade shops. With improvements to landscaping, lighting and outdoor gathering areas — all while retaining the original architectural character — The District Shops will be a huge tourism draw.
Mark Williams, Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Authority, says they are excited to see the new changes bring the area back to its heyday. 'This project reflects our continued commitment to preserving Jekyll Island's historic character while enhancing the experience for visitors and residents. It's a thoughtful balance of preservation and progress, designed to serve the community and honor the spirit of this special island. Pier Road has long been a hub for connection and discovery, and we're proud to carry that legacy forward with The District Shops.'
Set against a picturesque backdrop of grand live oaks draped in Spanish moss, you'll find the following places to enjoy at the District Shops at Historic Pier Road:
31•81, a Jekyll Island Lifestyle Shop inspired by the island's coastal coordinates – approximately 31.0735° N, 81.4114° W – offering a curated collection inspired by the barrier island itself and featuring brands such as Southern Tide, Comfort Colors, Smathers & Branson, Lilly Pulitzer, and Dune Jewelry.
Founder's Social provides a casual yet historically inspired setting for guests to enjoy casual fair, Georgia craft beer, and outdoor seating in a shaded beer garden.
Georgia Grown Signature Shoppe, developed in partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, highlights locally sourced products that showcase the state's agricultural legacy, craftspeople, and tradition.
J.P. & Company, a Gilded Age Portrait Studio, invites guests to don period costumes and participate in portrait experiences evocative of the island's golden era.
Jekyll Island Sweets features handmade confections, candy-making demonstrations, and a variety of seasonal ice cream flavors in an old-fashioned candy shop setting.
North Pole South specializes in Christmas ornaments and gifts, offering coastal-inspired keepsakes for year-round holiday shopping.
Pier Road Outfitters is stocked with essentials for outdoor exploration while on Jekyll Island, from biking along its 24-miles of paths to sunbathing along its pristine shores.
Wake Up Coffee Company, a local favorite, serves handcrafted coffee beverages and freshly baked goods.
Stop by on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for their grand opening celebration. You can enjoy live music and family-friendly entertainment.

Meat major Plukon buys vegan business Vega Insiders

Netherlands-based poultry major Plukon Food Group has acquired local vegan and vegetarian products business Vega Insiders. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. In a statement announcing the transaction Plukon Food Group CEO Kees Kraijenoord said: 'This acquisition fits perfectly within our strategy. Plukon has been working on alternative protein concepts for years. 'Plukon Food Group has long wanted to have a dedicated vega(n) production location. With this acquisition, that ambition becomes reality and we can actually scale up within a fully plant-based environment." Part of the Zilverwerf Group, Vega Insiders specialises in fresh and frozen products such as vegan minced meat, bacon and cheese bites. The products are sold to retail and foodservice customers. The company operates from a 'modern' factory in Udenhout, employing 18 people. Vega Insiders founder and Zilverwerf Groep owner Mart Beniers said: 'After years of building Vega Insiders, I was looking for a future-proof place for the company. 'In Plukon, I found a partner with the same mentality: enterprising, realistic and with knowledge of the market. There was an immediate click, and that gives me the confidence that Vega Insiders is in good hands.' Vega Insiders will continue to operate under its own name within the Plukon Food Group. All the employees of the company will be retained by the group to integrate their 'knowledge and expertise in the field of vega(n) product development', Plukon Food Group said. A major supplier of meat products, Plukon Food Group operates across 40 locations in seven countries across Europe. In 2024, the company reported a turnover of €3.4bn ($3.87bn) and employed 11,000 staff. In January, Plukon Food Group acquired Spanish family-owned poultry business Grupo Avícola Hidalgo. The business made a series of acquisitions in 2024, including a move for HKScan's Danish unit and Polish peer Algas. Kissimmee to assess fee on property owners to add firefighters, shorten their workweeks

Property owners in Kissimmee will soon start paying a special fee to help their fire department recruit additional firefighters and allow them to work less-rigorous schedules. After a public hearing Tuesday evening that lasted more than an hour, commissioners voted 4-1 to assess all property owners $105 per parcel of land plus 56 cents per $1,000 of improvements made. 'I can't compromise public safety to save a dollar,' Commissioner Angela Eady said. 'I can't do that to someone that's willing to risk their lives to save a life.' Commissioner Carlos Alvarez cast the sole dissenting vote, saying it would 'be a burden to homeowners.' The assessment will raise the approximately $6 million needed annually to fund 49 new positions (firefighters and support staff) in the Fire Department. The funds will be part of the department's budget for the fiscal year starting in October. Fire Chief Jim Walls said Monday in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel that the funds will allow hiring roughly 39 firefighters — an entire second shift — and double the total number in the department. Expanding the ranks of firefighters will allow them to work a 42-hour workweek instead of the current 56 — making it the first department in Central Florida to adopt that schedule. Walls said adding personnel is not about improving response times — the rapidly growing city of just over 70,000 has already worked to add new fire stations on the growing east side — but about recruiting firefighters. 'We've had a hard time hiring and Kissimmee isn't any different from the rest of the state,' he said. 'So this will help us with recruitment, retention, morale, mental and physical health.' Roughly a dozen residents spoke during the meeting — with most opposing the fee — but three city firefighters said their mental health and the quality of service they provide would deteriorate if they keep working 56 hours a week. Joshua Clark, a KPD firefighter and president of its union, said the city is growing quickly and so are the department's calls. 'Every year the population rises, the buildings go higher, the calls get more complex and we meet these challenges head on time and time again,' Clark said. 'But to keep doing that to stay ahead of the curve we need the proper tools and resources. The fire fee gives us exactly that.' But Ana Mendez, a mother of two and first-time homeowner, told commissioners she opposes the assessment because it would cause her financial hardship. Mendez said she understands firefighters protect the community but asked if taxes she currently pays could support the department's effort. 'I'm a survivor of domestic violence and left that situation to go to a shelter,' she told them in Spanish with Mayor Jackie Espinosa translating. 'To finally have a house is a big achievement for me, it's not fully paid for because I just got it, but the implication to have this fee as an additional expense will not be easy for me. 'For me this won't be easy and I'm sure that it won't be for other women who are in my same situation.' The assessment comes as a bill in the Legislature, House Bill 929, encourages a 42-hour workweek, Walls said. The legislation, in combination with Kissimmee's decision to adopt it, will likely push other cities and counties to implement the shorter workweek. 'It's just a matter of when people do make that switch,' he said. 'Now it only encourages, so it's not mandated … and so that to me it usually starts as encouraging but at some point down the road it usually will lead to having to do it.'
