Buresh Blog: Our wet season... a toasty May... Jekyll Island turtle tracking

To become a part of the First Alert Neighborhood weather station network - scan below &/or click * here *: The 2025 hurricane season is underway. Check out 'Talking the Tropics With Mike' for daily updates about what's up across the Atlantic Basin & all of the tropics. Our wet season is June, July, August & September - an average of 28.81″ of rain - & generally accounts for more than half of Jacksonville's/NE Fl. & SE Ga. annual rainfall. I define the start of the wet season as at least 3 days in a row with more than half of NE Fl. & SE Ga. measuring rain that is not caused by a large scale system like a front or low pressure system, for example. Our wet season is driven by two main forces: (1) the nearly daily sea breeze - either from the east coast or west coast or both. As the land heats up adjacent to the cooler ocean, a natural area of low pressure forms over land. Since air flows from high to low pressure, a sea breeze develops which acts like a front & lifts the hot, humid air creating showers & storms as the sea breeze moves inland (at least as long as the atmosphere is favorable such as high humidity & at least somewhat cooler air aloft). (2) tropical disturbances - this could be tropical waves, tropical depressions, tropical storms or hurricanes. We're coming off a very warm May - only one days was below average & not until the 31st. Jacksonville had its 5th warmest May on record (going back to 1871)... a record number of 90-degree days with 19... a record number for May - 16 - straight 90-degree days (the old record - 12 straight days in 1957)... & the highest average high temp. for May on record at 90.4 degrees. For the spring months of March, April & May, it was the second warmest on record (71.1 degrees/+2.6 degrees) for Jacksonville with the 24 90-degree days beating the old spring record of 23 days in 2011, the average is 10 days. This is pretty cool - the Jekyll Island Authority launches an interactive map to track turtle activity. From GPB News: Wildlife officials have deployed an interactive dashboard with real-time maps tracking diamondback terrapin crossings and sea turtle nests on beaches. The full story is * here *. New interactive maps track Coastal Georgia barrier island sea turtle activity in real time

New dashboards online released by the Jekyll Island Authority provides real-time turtle activity on and near the Coastal Georgia barrier island. One of the maps displays locations where diamondback terrapins have been spotted along the 6-mile-ling Jekyll Island Causeway. It states whether the turtle was found alive, dead, or injured. It also provides daily terrapin counts and historical data. A second map tracks sea turtle nesting activity along Jekyll Island's beaches showing approximate locations. Exact locations are not used to protect against poaching. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to download the Action News Jax Now app for your smart TV and click here to stream Action News Jax live.

Jekyll Island revitalizes historic district

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — Historic Pier Road on Jekyll Island is ready for its closeup. The Jekyll Island Authority has announced the opening of The District Shops. This shopping and dining destination in the heart of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District was nearly two years in the making. It features eight new places for visitors and locals to shop, sip and savor everything Jekyll has to offer. During its 'gilded age,' the area was originally home to buildings and trade shops. With improvements to landscaping, lighting and outdoor gathering areas — all while retaining the original architectural character — The District Shops will be a huge tourism draw. Mark Williams, Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Authority, says they are excited to see the new changes bring the area back to its heyday. 'This project reflects our continued commitment to preserving Jekyll Island's historic character while enhancing the experience for visitors and residents. It's a thoughtful balance of preservation and progress, designed to serve the community and honor the spirit of this special island. Pier Road has long been a hub for connection and discovery, and we're proud to carry that legacy forward with The District Shops.' Set against a picturesque backdrop of grand live oaks draped in Spanish moss, you'll find the following places to enjoy at the District Shops at Historic Pier Road: 31•81, a Jekyll Island Lifestyle Shop inspired by the island's coastal coordinates – approximately 31.0735° N, 81.4114° W – offering a curated collection inspired by the barrier island itself and featuring brands such as Southern Tide, Comfort Colors, Smathers & Branson, Lilly Pulitzer, and Dune Jewelry. Founder's Social provides a casual yet historically inspired setting for guests to enjoy casual fair, Georgia craft beer, and outdoor seating in a shaded beer garden. Georgia Grown Signature Shoppe, developed in partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, highlights locally sourced products that showcase the state's agricultural legacy, craftspeople, and tradition. J.P. & Company, a Gilded Age Portrait Studio, invites guests to don period costumes and participate in portrait experiences evocative of the island's golden era. Jekyll Island Sweets features handmade confections, candy-making demonstrations, and a variety of seasonal ice cream flavors in an old-fashioned candy shop setting. North Pole South specializes in Christmas ornaments and gifts, offering coastal-inspired keepsakes for year-round holiday shopping. Pier Road Outfitters is stocked with essentials for outdoor exploration while on Jekyll Island, from biking along its 24-miles of paths to sunbathing along its pristine shores. Wake Up Coffee Company, a local favorite, serves handcrafted coffee beverages and freshly baked goods. Stop by on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for their grand opening celebration. You can enjoy live music and family-friendly entertainment. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
