Google settles Android TV antitrust case in India with Rs 20 crore penalty, read the company's statement here

has agreed to pay a penalty of Rs 20.2 crore to settle an
Android
TV matter with the
Competition Commission of India
(CCI). This comes after the competition watchdog found a prima facie case of abuse of dominant position by the tech giant. As part of the settlement (that Google applied under Section 48A of the Competition Act), the company has agreed to a 'New India Agreement'. This will allow Google to offer separate licences for the Play Store and Play Services on
Android smart TVs
in India. The latest agreement will even remove the need for TV manufacturers to bundle these licences or set default placement rules. The latest settlement follows previous penalties imposed on the company by the CCI in cases related to its Play Store policies and dominance in the Android mobile ecosystem.
What Google said about the CCI settlement
Confirming its decision to settle with the CCI, the company said:
'Google is committed to abiding by applicable local laws in every country where we operate and are grateful to the CCI for the opportunity to engage and present our case. We also thank the CCI for instituting processes which enable constructive engagements between companies and the market, allowing for continued investment and growth.'
The case began with a complaint filed by Kshitiz Arya and Purushottam Anand under Section 19(1)(a) of the Competition Act, 2002. It was directed against Google LLC, Google India Pvt Ltd, Xiaomi Technology India, and TCL India Holding, alleging that Google had violated provisions of the Act by using its dominant position to impose restrictive agreements on TV manufacturers.

The CCI also noted that Google will waive the need for a valid Android Compatibility Commitment (ACC) for devices shipped without Google apps. This will enable TV manufacturers to build and sell non-compatible Android devices in India without breaching the Television App Distribution Agreement (TADA).
".. considering the material on record and the assessment of the settlement proposal after taking into consideration the nature, gravity, and impact of the contraventions, the commission agrees to the proposal for settlement in terms of Section 48A (3) of the Act and the settlement regulations. The final settlement amount, after applying a settlement discount of 15%, is Rs 20.2 crore,"
CCI said in a statement.

Western Railway to fit nearly 6,000 AI-based cameras on 978 engines: ‘Will give useful info in emergencies, enhance safety'
Western Railway (WR) is planning to install artificial intelligence (AI)-based cameras on 978 of its freight and passenger engines soon. With an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore, the cameras will be installed to monitor activity both in and around the engines, across all regions, including Mumbai. 'The AI cameras will enable track condition monitoring, railway crossing observation and activity around the engine. Through monitoring irregular movement on tracks, these cameras will assist in determining the factors behind accidents and further improve the capability to analyse incidents,' Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, said. The cameras will be installed on 810 electric and 168 diesel engines in WR's fleet. There will be six CCTV cameras installed on each engine – one in each of the two driving cabs, four along all directions outside the engine, and an additional camera scanning the periphery, WR officials said. These will be 360-degree recording cameras that track movement and assist in the investigation of accidents. The CCTV cameras will be high definition and high resolution, making sure that important information like track conditions, signals and surrounding obstacles are well captured. The systems will be in offline mode, making sure that data will not be accessed or hacked in to. 'This installation will be used to yield useful information in the event of emergencies, which will assist in investigations and enhance general safety,' added Abhishek. The installation process will begin through a tender process, with emphasis on agencies capable of furnishing their own software, hardware and source code. The installation is supposed to end by March 2026. Through the surveillance of both the exterior and interior of trains, the railway is looking to improve surveillance, accountability, and safety measures in its operations.

Net direct tax collections dip 1.39% to Rs 4.59 lakh crore despite 5% rise in gross mop-up; refunds surge 58%
India's net direct tax collections for the ongoing financial year 2025-26 declined by 1.39 per cent to Rs 4.59 lakh crore as of June 19, mainly due to a sharp surge in refund issuances, according to government data released on Saturday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the same period last year, net direct tax collections had stood at Rs 4.65 lakh crore, according to news agency PTI. Gross direct tax collections, however, rose by 4.86 per cent to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, up from Rs 5.19 lakh crore collected during the corresponding period in FY24. The fall in net collections is attributed to a 58 per cent increase in refunds, which touched Rs 86,385 crore so far this fiscal, indicating improved processing and faster taxpayer services. Advance tax collections between April 1 and June 19, 2025, showed a modest growth of 3.87 per cent at Rs 1.56 lakh crore, a significant slowdown from the 27 per cent year-on-year growth recorded in the same period last year. Corporate advance tax collections rose 5.86 per cent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore, while non-corporate advance tax collections fell 2.68 per cent to Rs 33,928 crore. Corporate tax collections overall fell by over 5 per cent to Rs 1.73 lakh crore, while non-corporate tax collections, largely personal income tax, saw a marginal rise of 0.7 per cent to Rs 2.73 lakh crore. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections also grew by 12 per cent, reaching Rs 13,013 crore during this period. Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has introduced the 'e-Pay Tax' feature on its official portal to simplify the tax payment process, according to news agency ANI. The broader tax reform agenda is also advancing, with the Income Tax Bill 2025 currently under review by a Select Committee. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced that the new Bill, which aims to replace the existing Income Tax Act of 1961 with a more concise, litigation-free law, will be taken up in the monsoon session of Parliament.
