When you see a "dish of the day" promoted in a restaurant, it's rather appealing to consider trying it.
These meals are often showcased as something unique and described so tantalisingly that customers feel an irresistible urge to order them.
However, a marketing and psychology expert has revealed this can be somewhat misleading. Despite how good they might look, these offers may not always be the fantastic bargains they're made out to be.
A TikTok marketing expert Basia suggests these "specials" are rarely as special as they suggest. Instead, she says they're typically just clever ways for chefs to ensure surplus ingredients get used before expiring.
For example, there could be excess steak close to its sell-by date; savvy chefs might turn it into an enticing new offering to prevent waste.
In her insightful TikTok video, Basia observed: "The daily special written in chalk? It's been 'today's special' for three weeks. But your brain sees handwriting and thinks: limited, fresh, rare.", reports the Mirror.
Even celebrated chef Gordon Ramsay, with his Michelin-starred reputation, endorses this view and advises guests to be cautious of soup specials. He intimates they're usually just an amalgam of whatever leftovers exist, served again and again.
Ramsay suggested in Town and Country magazine: "Ask what yesterday's soup du jour was before today's special. It may be the case that it's the soup du month."
Similarly, prominent chef Anthony Bourdain warned his readers in Kitchen Confidential against choosing fish dishes on Mondays. Such a special at the beginning of the week might imply the fish has been sitting around since Friday, unsold.
Fish markets usually close over the weekend, throwing into question Monday's seafood freshness.
In her video, Basia unveils common restaurant psychological ploys to enlighten her audience on these covert tactics....
1. The power of price perception.

The "anchoring effect" is often utilised by eateries to shape patrons' value perception.
By listing a steak for £50 alongside another for £35, it makes the second option seem like a steal. As Basia highlighted: "It's to make others look like a deal."
2. A never-empty tip jar.
Social pressure is substantial even among unnamed diners.
Basia points out: "They put cash in the tip jar before you even show up. So when you see it, your brain goes: 'Oh... tipping is what people do here."
3. The still or sparkling query.
Upon being seated, you may be queried about your water preference, with tap water often feeling like an awkward choice and raising overall spend.
Basia states: "[It's] not 'would you like water?' It skips the choice of whether, and jumps to which."
4. Menus sans currency icons.
To soft-pedal the pricing, some establishments list prices sans the pound sign, leaving just digits that might appear less daunting.
Clarifying this approach, Basia says: "Because '£24' screams money. But '24' just looks like a number."

Ncuti Gatwa reveals real reason behind Doctor Who exit as fans suspect it 'wasn't planned'

Doctor Who fans were left shocked during Saturday's night finale of the BBC show when Ncuti Gatwa left his role as the Doctor after just two series and regenerated into old fan favourite Billie Piper. Doctor Who's star Ncuti Gatwa is set to go down in the beloved sci-fi shows' 62 year history for many reasons - one of them being as one of the few actors who served the shortest time in his role as the Doctor. After just two series of the iconic drama, the Scottish-Rwandan actor shared with fans that he was stepping down from his role as the Time Lord. Ncuti cited the reason he quit was due to the physical and mental demands of the show, especially on his lead character, but fans believe his exit was not a planned one despite what the Sex Education star has told the media. The 32-year-old has now been replaced by the iconic Billie Piper, who previously starred in the BBC drama as Rose Tyler alongside former doctor Christopher Ecclestone, who only lasted one series. Piper also starred in the 2006 series with David Tennant. ‌ Ncuti recorded a video explanation for his fans after his exit was aired in the Doctor Who season 15 finale on Saturday May 31. He said: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Unfortunately, we are mere mortals. ‌ "I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it's time." ‌ However, die-hard fans believe there is another reason behind his exit, the Mirror reports. Taking to X, one fan named Mr Tardis had clearly done their research as they wrote: "In October 2024, Ncuti Gatwa was on 'The Graham Norton Show' saying he was going to be filming another series of DW next year. ‌ "In June 2025, he officially leaves the show and regenerates. This was never the plan. What a shame. He deserved so much better." Another echoed: "In situations like that, they'll often shoot two different alternative scenes: one where the series continues, and one to finish things off. "Ncuti may well have actually thought he'd be staying on back in October 2024, even after filming a regeneration scene just in case." ‌ A third fan was left disappointed with the news of his exit as they wrote: "I am so f****g sad. its one thing to see your doctor regenerate because they chose to, another to see it happen because of behind the scenes s**t. "I loved literally every episode this era. I've been defending it the whole time. this.. this kinda broke me." ‌ Adding to his exit speech, Ncuti said: "You know when you get cast, at some point, you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. "This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever. He added: "There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe." ‌ The former Doctor Who star continued: "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor." Meanwhile showrunner Russell T. Davies also expressed his sadness over Ncuti's decision to step down. ‌ ‌ He expressed: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights." He added: "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. "After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!" A spokesperson for Doctor Who declined to comment.

Lewis Capaldi's hilarious reaction to Ed Sheeran's surprise phone call as fans gush over 'bromance'

Lewis Capaldi fans are delighted to have been given an update on the Scots star after his pal Ed Sheeran gave him a surprise goodnight phone call and filmed it live on TikTok. Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran have once again demonstrated their close 'bromance' in a hilarious goodnight call video which has left fans of the music duo in stitches. Taking to TikTok earlier this week, Sheeran uploaded an amusing video to the streaming platform of him phoning 'his one and only to wish him a goodnight' on his tablet. The video was uploaded in the midst of a viral TikTok 'positive masculinity' trend where men have been filming themselves making surprise phone calls to their mates before bedtime to say goodnight and tell them they love them. Capaldi, 28, can be heard answering the call as Sheeran tells him: "Hello mate. I'm just calling to wish you goodnight. ‌ Without even questioning the situation, Lewis replies: "Hey baby. Goodnight my guy. Goodnight my special guy." The Bad Habits hitmaker asks him: "What are you doing?" as the Scots singer responds: "I'm kinda just chilling on my couch right now. Feeling pretty mellow." ‌ Sheeran can be seen stifling a laugh on the camera as he continues: "And what are you wearing?" ‌ The Someone You Loved singer replies in true Capaldi fashion: "Just the usual, got my little boccies (boxers) on. You know, just hanging out, relaxing." Ed, 34, says: "Well I just want to let you know that you're loved and cared for" as Lewis says back to him: "I'll think about you when I go to sleep tonight." ‌ Sheeran adds: "I'll think about you right now just before I go to sleep and whilst I'm asleep." Lewis signs off as he says: "Nice one bro. Love you" leaving his pal Ed laughing as he ends the call with: "Love you my love. Hang loose." The video, which was uploaded to Ed Sheeran's official TikTok account, has racked in 1.5m likes with amused fans racing to the comment section. ‌ One wrote: "Lewis so unfazed by this I am 100% convinced you do this every night." Another fan exclaimed: "The bromance between ed sheeran and lewis capaldi never dies." ‌ A third joked: "Are we interrupting?" while a fourth commented: "Lewis reacted as if this was a part of his bedtime routine #positivemasculinity" The video comes just days after the duo were recently spotted at the Premier League game between Ipswich Town and West Ham on Sunday, May 25. Capaldi, who has been keeping a low profile since he announced he was taking a break from the limelight in 2023, was seen laughing and joking with Ed in the stands of the game. ‌ The Someone You Loved hitmaker said he was taking a break from music following his Glastonbury performance almost two years ago, where he was seen visibly struggling with Tourette's syndrome, which he was diagnosed with in September 2022. However, he is rumoured to be back in the studio making music and is thought to be making a comeback soon. Loyal fans in the comment section of Ed's Tiktok begged the Scots singer to return soon as one wrote: "We miss Lewis Capaldi", with a series of crying faces. Another echoed: "A Lewis Capaldi update. Tell him we miss him SOOOO MUCH!", accompanied by more sad face emojis. A third wrote: "Thank you for letting us know our Lewis is ok! We love you both!"

Influencer Taylor Ward has revealed she is pregnant with her second child with footballer husband Riyad Mahrez as the pair shared a touching video as they announced their news WAG Taylor Ward has announced she is expecting her second child with footballer Riyad Mahrez in a sweet post. She shared the exciting news with her 2.8 million followers alongside her husband and daughter, Mila. The family is set to expand as Taylor revealed she is pregnant in the adorable update. Taylor, who is the daughter of Real Housewives of Cheshire star Dawn Ward, appeared in a clip alongside Riyad and Mila. ‌ She captioned the post: "Our family is growing," alongside a white heart emoji. Riyad, who is also a dad to two daughters, Ayla and Inaya, with his former partner Rita Johal, joined Taylor in the emotional video alongside their children. ‌ The couple both wore white T-shirts as Taylor showed her growing baby bump and held up her scan photos. Their 2-year-old daughter, Mila, kissed Taylor's stomach as Riyad gently held onto his wife. Mila beamed as she also held onto the scan photos of her incoming brother or sister. The couple also filmed the touching moment they told Riyad's daughters about their happy news as the girls were handed photos at the same time. ‌ They shared a family hug before the girls set about the task of revealing if Taylor is expecting a boy or girl. Taylor has chosen to keep the result private for now, as their daughters dug into a cake that revealed either pink or blue depending on the gender of the baby. The couple were flooded with comments from their celebrity pals as TOWIE's Ferne McCann said: "Congrats x x x x." Love Island's Grace Jackson commented: "Congratulations." Model Roxy Horner wrote: "Congratulations babe," and Lottie Tomlinson gushed: "Yay congratulations." Earlier this year, the couple revealed their plans for a large family as Riyad admitted he "wants a football team" of children. ‌ 'Riyad would love a football team,' Taylor told the Mirror. 'He's a brilliant dad. He needs more kids, that's for sure.' Influencer Taylor first married footballer Riyad in 2022 in an intimate Muslim ceremony at home. The pair legally became husband and wife at The Londoner Hotel surrounded by 30 of their closest family and friends in September 2023. Their lavish final ceremony was in July 2024, just days after Mila's second birthday. 'I have three sisters, so I want to give Mila the same. I want her to have a big family,' said Taylor, who has a very close bond with her glamorous sisters Darby, Charlie and Aston. ‌ Mila will turn three in July, and Taylor told us she was ready to embark on another pregnancy – and spend sleepless nights with her newborn. 'I've got to carry the children and do the pregnancy, which is not easy,' said Taylor. 'The newborn stage is a lot more challenging than people think. "Those sleepless nights are probably what's made me hold off having another one straight away. But I'm definitely more ready now than I ever have been.' Of course with a husband earning an estimated £44million a year playing for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, Taylor has a nanny plus staff to help around their gorgeous home. However, she maintained she's still a very hands-on mum. 'I do have a nanny and I do have house help but we live abroad,' explained Taylor. 'I don't have any of my family, I don't have any of Riyad's family in Saudi so we have zero family support."
