When you see a "dish of the day" promoted in a restaurant, it's rather appealing to consider trying it.
These meals are often showcased as something unique and described so tantalisingly that customers feel an irresistible urge to order them.
However, a marketing and psychology expert has revealed this can be somewhat misleading. Despite how good they might look, these offers may not always be the fantastic bargains they're made out to be.
A TikTok marketing expert Basia suggests these "specials" are rarely as special as they suggest. Instead, she says they're typically just clever ways for chefs to ensure surplus ingredients get used before expiring.
For example, there could be excess steak close to its sell-by date; savvy chefs might turn it into an enticing new offering to prevent waste.
In her insightful TikTok video, Basia observed: "The daily special written in chalk? It's been 'today's special' for three weeks. But your brain sees handwriting and thinks: limited, fresh, rare.", reports the Mirror.
Even celebrated chef Gordon Ramsay, with his Michelin-starred reputation, endorses this view and advises guests to be cautious of soup specials. He intimates they're usually just an amalgam of whatever leftovers exist, served again and again.
Ramsay suggested in Town and Country magazine: "Ask what yesterday's soup du jour was before today's special. It may be the case that it's the soup du month."
Similarly, prominent chef Anthony Bourdain warned his readers in Kitchen Confidential against choosing fish dishes on Mondays. Such a special at the beginning of the week might imply the fish has been sitting around since Friday, unsold.
Fish markets usually close over the weekend, throwing into question Monday's seafood freshness.
In her video, Basia unveils common restaurant psychological ploys to enlighten her audience on these covert tactics....
1. The power of price perception.

The "anchoring effect" is often utilised by eateries to shape patrons' value perception.
By listing a steak for £50 alongside another for £35, it makes the second option seem like a steal. As Basia highlighted: "It's to make others look like a deal."
2. A never-empty tip jar.
Social pressure is substantial even among unnamed diners.
Basia points out: "They put cash in the tip jar before you even show up. So when you see it, your brain goes: 'Oh... tipping is what people do here."
3. The still or sparkling query.
Upon being seated, you may be queried about your water preference, with tap water often feeling like an awkward choice and raising overall spend.
Basia states: "[It's] not 'would you like water?' It skips the choice of whether, and jumps to which."
4. Menus sans currency icons.
To soft-pedal the pricing, some establishments list prices sans the pound sign, leaving just digits that might appear less daunting.
Clarifying this approach, Basia says: "Because '£24' screams money. But '24' just looks like a number."

In a new TikTok video, she explained: 'I wasn't paid for the amount of episodes I was on the show. Expenses were paid for, so my flight to Ibiza was paid for, the mixer was also paid for, the long as you have your receipts, that was all covered. 'They covered lunch and dinner. If we was off-site from the hotel everything was catered for. It was amazing. 'Chef was amazing, the staff were amazing, really, really lovely people. And we had breakfast, lunch and dinner, just like a buffet really. 'So it was like going to Ibiza on an all-inclusive holiday that I didn't have to pay for. Obviously, as a single mum of three, I was gassed.' She continued: 'I did spend a lot of my own money though, not going to lie to you, like in-duty free, a bit of alcohol, Prosecco, a couple of bottles, just to have fun, especially in the night time as well.' Despite getting on well with Christine, her time on the show came to an abrupt end when the Loose Women star - who was married to comedian Paddy McGuinness, 51, until their split in 2022 - made the shock decision to leave during the latest episode. Speaking to the show's agents, she said: "Well, I've been thinking quite a lot whilst we've been in Ibiza and I think I need to date in more of a natural environment. "I think I just would love to meet somebody and date more privately. It's where I'm kind of feeling myself going back, when I want to go freely forward. "Right. And I've made the decision to leave the agency." 4 Christine broke down in tears on tonight's episode Emotional Christine McGuinness opens up about Paddy's 'mistakes' in split saying 'the trust was broken'

Love Is Blind UK star who was CUT from show revealed despite getting engaged in pods

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A LOVE Is Blind UK star has revealed that they got engaged in the pods – though their connection wasn't seen on screen. The Netflix dating experiment returned last week with 15 new men and 15 new women entering the "pods" in a bid to find love with someone without ever seeing them. 5 Ross appeared on Love Is Blind UK but was barely seen on screen Credit: Instagram 5 It's not known who Ross's mystery fiancee is Credit: Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2025 Participants only get to meet their match once they get engaged – and from there it's a six week whirlwind to the finish line including romantic getaways, living together, and meeting loved ones. However, with so many connections there to be formed, not everyone gets to make it past the initial stages, even if they put a ring on it. Typically on a Love Is Blind season, up to five couples are followed past the initial stages. And one star – Ross Millington – has revealed he was one of the unlucky people who were halted from continuing the process. As TikTok blew up with analysing the first episode, one fan spoke about Ross's brief appearance on the show. While he was rarely seen in the pods, he was shown chatting with the lads in the men's lounge as he went through the process – speaking to Kai (who did make it through to the next stage) and Demola (who was snubbed by potential match Katisha in favour of Javen in the process). Ross, a 30-year-old barber shop owner at the time of the series being filmed, jumped in on one fans TikTok asking more about him. "That was me," he noted as she pointed him out. "I didn't make it to Greece unfortunately. Reveal went well though." Ross didn't elaborate further, but as he went through a "reveal" it is safe to assume he at least got engaged. A grab of the comment was later posted to Reddit, with fans dissecting who the lucky woman could be. Love Is Blind UK star storms off show and says 'get this mic off me' after branding co-star 'disrespectful' in fiery rant "Good thing he didnt make it to Greece, as they went to Cyprus," joked one. "I counted 2 guys and 2 gals during the "I'm engaged" scenes that had zero screen time," said another. "They are still around during those moments and I would assume they may have ended up as a couple but were not picked to go to Cyprus. "Makes you wonder if their connection was boring/lack of drama to not be picked over Javen and Katisha...." "I've never understood why they pick some and not the others and then don't edit it down more in post production if necessary," said a third. Christine McGuinness' real reason for leaving Celebs Go Dating and what fans didn't see

EXCLUSIVE: Anna Williamson reflects on Christine McGuinness decision to leave Celebs Go Dating as emotional scenes are set to air during tonight's episode Tonight, Celebs Go Dating viewers will see Christine McGuinness leave the agency after an emotional chat with dating experts, Anna Williamson and Paul C Brunson. ‌ Christine joined the dating agency last week, although it was clear she was struggling from episode one. We saw the mother of three struggle to decide who to take to Ibiza. However, Anna said that the most "powerful decision" Christine made was the leave the process. ‌ In last night's episode, Christine was told she'd be going on a blind date, although she told the cameras she "hated surprises," and tonight, it looks like it all gets to much for her as she makes the "brave" decision to quit. It comes after Christine McGuinness says 'it's my fault' and reveals surprising truth behind Paddy split. ‌ Now, dating expert Anna Williamson has spoken to the Mirror on the shock moment she found out Christine would be leaving. Although on screen, it looked like Christine was only at the agency for a week before deciding to call it quits - this wasn't actually the case, Anna confirmed. The dating expert said the star "really worked on herself" in the time she was in the agency, on and off screen, which lead her to the "brave" decision to call it quits. "Every moment really does count when you're in the agency, and in real time we had Christine with us for a good couple of weeks," she said. "It was really lovely to get to know her, and this is what's so special about the show, it is real. "Christine herself, nor us, could predict that she would get, a little way into the process and actually realise that this wasn't something she was quite ready to do right now." "And often we only know that only those who can make those decisions when we start to work on ourselves, and that's what Christine did." ‌ The revelation came as a shock to both Anna and Paul, who had no idea about her decision until she came for an emotional chat with them in scenes set to air tonight. "We didn't know until the scene you'll see," Anna told us. "As coaches, we picked up that she was finding the process challenging, everybody find the process challenging. Ibiza put even more of a spotlight on that." ‌ Of course, the agents were sad to see her leave - but Anna said she and Paul 'applauded' the star's 'brave' decision to walk away. "It was very brave of her to come to us to say she had made the decision that it wasn't the right time. Me and Paul absolutely applauded that. That is always the right approach, to be lead by our clients as coaches. They're in the driving seat, we're just in the passengers seat helping them stay on the right road that's right for them." During her two weeks at the agency, Christine was extremely open about her past, opening up about the reasoning behind her split with Paddy for the first time. Christine once again opened up to the agents, as she revealed that 'the trust was broken' in her marriage. ‌ Reflecting on the emotional chat, Anna believes opening up helped her along in her healing process. "When we have unresolved emotional baggage from the past, it's really important for us to establish where our clients are within that journey, and if we need to help them any further in unpacking and neutralising any pain," she said. The couple who wed in 2011, made a shock announcement in 2022, that they had decided to go their separate ways. ‌ "Healing and vocalising and working through our previous relationships absolutely helps to feel a lot more whole and in a more intentional space to working out what you want and what you're looking for, and that's definitely something Christine found too," Anna added. "It takes a while to gain the celebrity's trust, and she was very generous in allowing her to, you know, dropping her walls and trusting and telling us exactly what had led to her relationship breakdown and it was clearly a very emotional thing for her to talk about." Anna and the rest of the agents stressed that Christine left with her head held high, the door will always be open, should she ever want to return to the show.
