It's time for Connor McDavid to win the Cup 'right [expletive] now'
A championship is earned, not given.
But there are moments when you know when it's a star athlete's time. You've watched them grow, tweak their games, adjust their leadership, found the right combination of teammates and coach, perhaps maybe even find comfort off the court or field.
It's Connor McDavid's turn.
I say this knowing full well there's a buzzsaw waiting for him in the Stanley Cup Finals. His Edmonton Oilers will once again face the Florida Panthers, the defending Cup champions who are built for postseason play with depth, ferocity and veteran savvy.
But I'll be rooting for the NHL's generational star to finally get over the hump and win it. He was so close last year, with a seven-game series ending in a heartbreaking 2-1 win for the Panthers in the final winner-takes-all contest.
I think back to that clip of him that FACEOFF: Inside the NHL captured, in which cameras found him screaming at his Oilers teammates in the locker room: "RIGHT [EXPLETIVE] NOW!"
Maybe McDavid and the Oilers have learned from that experience. Maybe they now know that it takes an extra gear to take down a playoff-tested team like the Panthers. Maybe this is the best shot they'll have with this deep roster, better goaltending and a coach in Kris Knoblauch with an added year of experience.
What I know is it's McDavid's time to win it all. Now, he's just got to go and get it.
The Knicks figure it out (is it too late?)
Hi! Life-long Knicks fan here! I'll tell you how I'm feeling after a Game 5 in which my team never looked back: "Awesome job pushing off elimination ... but the Pacers are going to bring it in Game 6 at home. What are you going to do to combat that?"
Because: the Knicks had intensity on both ends of the court. Karl-Anthony Towns continues to pile up dumb fouls, but at least he's also continued to torch the Pacers on offense. The second unit with [Knicks fan chant] LAN-DRY SHA-MET continues to flummox Indiana. And I know Tyrese Haliburton is going to watch that game tape and know he's got to do what he did in Game 4.
So, the Knicks simply have to replicate that for two more games. It's doable.
Quick hits: BEAR IN BRISTOL! ... Oh no, AJSS ... and more.
-- There's a bear roaming around on ESPN's Bristol campus. Be safe out there.
-- AJ Smith-Shawver got some help from a Braves teammate when it came to his injury. Meanwhile, lip-readers think he talked about hearing a "pop."
-- John Mellencamp -- yes, the singer/songwriter! -- ripped Pat McAfee for the personality's NSFW speech at the Pacers' Game 4.
-- Matthew Stafford had some laughs over playing Olympic flag football.

Ski jumping's suit-cheating saga rolls on as 5 Norwegians are charged over 'manipulation'

OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP) — Two Olympic gold medalist ski jumpers and three staffers on the dominant Norwegian team have been charged with ethics violations by the International Ski Federation after an investigation into alleged tampering with ski suits. The FIS said Monday that star ski jumpers Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, two coaches and a member of the service staff were charged under ethics and competition rules following an investigation into 'equipment manipulation.' The allegations first emerged around the world championships in Norway in March and shook the tight-knit ski jumping community. Illegally modified suits could help athletes to fly further. The charges come six months before the Winter Olympics. FIS said its ethics committee will rule on the charges and could impose bans or fines. It didn't say how soon a ruling is expected. FIS said the investigation conducted 38 witness interviews and examined 88 pieces of evidence, and that no one else will be charged in the case. FIS has already tightened up its rules on ski jump suits, something which caused a spate of disqualifications when athletes gathered for the first competition of the new season Saturday. FIS said that was down to technical issues and it didn't suspect 'ill intent.' ___ AP sports:

Winners, losers from Watkins Glen race won by Shane van Gisbergen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — A look at the winners and losers from Sunday's Cup race race Watkins Glen. WINNERS Shane van Gisbergen — Scored his fourth consecutive road course victory, winning by 11.1 seconds — the second largest margin of victory in Cup history at Watkins Glen. He becomes the third driver in series history to win four consecutive road course races. He is the first driver to win four road course races in a season. Trackhouse Racing — Organization had all three of its cars finish in the top 10 in the same race for the first time. Shane van Gisbergen won, Daniel Suarez was seventh and Ross Chastain placed 10th. Christopher Bell — He finished second. It's his eighth top-three finish in 24 races this season. Bell has finished in the top five in four of the five road course races this season, including a win at COTA earlier in the year. Chris Buescher — He won a stage and finished third, maintaining his hold on the final playoff spot with two races left in the regular season. William Byron — His fourth-place finish came a week after his Iowa win, giving him back-to-back top-five results for the first time since doing so at Charlotte and Nashville in late May and early June. Chase Briscoe — His fifth-place finish gives him four top-five results in the last five races. LOSERS Kyle Larson — A mechanical issue sent him to the garage early in the race. He returned and finished last in the 39-car field. Larson has finished 30th or worse in four of the five road course races this season. Josh Berry — His 35th-place result is the seventh time in the last 11 races he's finished 22nd or worse. He has placed outside the top 25 in four of the five road course races this season. Ty Gibbs — He finished 33rd and has placed outside the top 20 in three consecutive races. He had a frustrating day, which was evident in a radio exchange with race strategist Chris Gabehart, who also is the competition director for Joe Gibbs Racing. After scoring his fourth-straight road course win, Marty Snider and Dale Jarrett discuss if Shane van Gisbergen has established himself as the greatest road racer in NASCAR history. Watch highlights from the NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at the Glen from Watkins Glen International. Christopher Bell admits his team has struggled to "find a rhythm" lately and is "thrilled" with a runner-up finish at Watkins Glen that flexed his team's road course program. Chris Buescher gained twelve points on the playoff bubble after Watkins Glen and "understands" the position of points racing, but his confidence level is "high" with two races remaining.
