Barry Bonds statue 'is coming,' says Giants CEO Larry Baer: 'Barry is deserving of a statue'

The Hall of Fame isn't calling anytime soon.
But it sounds like Barry Bonds will be immortalized in San Francisco.
Giants CEO Larry Baer said Wednesday that the team does intend to erect a statue of the slugger, who smashed baseball's home run records as a Giant during the height of baseball's steroids era.

Baer broached the subject during an interview with San Francisco 95.7's "The Morning Roast."
"On the radar, I would say on the radar," Baer said. "Barry is certainly deserving of a statue, and I would say should be next up. We don't have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing."
Baer went on to mention the "great relationships" that Bonds has with the Giants and more definitively declared that a Bonds statue will be built.
"It's coming," Baer said. "All I can say is it's coming."
As for when and where? And what it will look like? Baer didn't not expound. It sounds like an actual plan isn't in place. But the Giants boss is in support of it, so it sounds like a Bonds statue is coming.

If Bonds is, indeed, up next, his would be the fifth statue to be erected at Oracle Park. Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry and Orlando Cepeda all have statues around San Francisco's home stadium.

If Bonds does get a statue, his honor will bear one glaring distinction from the other five. Each of the other Giants honored with a statue is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bonds, notably, is not. And he doesn't project to be inducted anytime soon, if ever.
Bonds played 15 of his 22 MLB seasons with the Giants, a time in which he amassed 586 of his MLB record 762 home runs and launched a single-season record 73 home runs in 2001. Whether one chooses to acknowledge those records is in the eye of the beholder. Because of Bonds' association with the steroids era, many choose not to.
But he hit them. And he made 12 of his 14 All-Star appearances and won five of his seven career MVPs with the Giants. Which is more than enough for the Giants to honor Bonds as they please.

49ers WR explains what will change for him after Deebo Samuel was traded

The San Francisco 49ers made some changes to their wide receiver room this offseason, sending Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick, signing Demarcus Robinson, drafting Jordan Watkins and Junior Bergen and losing Chris Conley to retirement. On top of that movement, San Francisco may be without star wideout Brandon Aiyuk to start the season after he tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus in a 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 last year. With that, someone will need to step up early in the 2025 season, and that could be second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who is preparing like he's already the top guy on San Francisco's depth chart. "My mindset has not changed at all. I'm going to attack it the exact same way I always have," Pearsall said on a recent episode of "49ers Talk" with NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. "No matter what place I'm at, no matter what the coach tells me, I still have that wide receiver 1 mindset. That's just how I was raised. I've always been a hard worker. My parents raised me that way, and I've always had that same mindset no matter what position you're in. That's just how I attack my life in general. "What makes our room really cool is that everyone has that mindset. [There's] very healthy competition in there and it makes everybody better. I'm excited to see what our receiver room can do this year because I'm still very confident in that." The 49ers took the 24-year-old in the first round (No. 31 overall) of the 2024 NFL draft out of Florida, and after he missed the start of his rookie year due to taking a gunshot to the chest, Pearsall finished with 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. This year, Pearsall has plenty of challengers for that top spot in the wide receiver room, including Robinson, Watkins and Jauan Jennings. However, the former Gator should have the highest ceiling of the trio. More 49ers: 49ers WR laughs at offseason trade talks as he recovers from season-ending injury

Yankees' Max Fried continues to make case to start the All-Star Game after reaching 10 wins

CINCINNATI (AP) — Aaron Boone still has a couple weeks before deciding who will be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. It could end up being one of his own players. Max Fried became the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this season in the New York Yankees 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. 'It's down the road. We'll see. He's making the case though,' Boone said about Fried's chances to start the midsummer classic on July 15 in Atlanta. The left-hander allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Fried is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. 'I guess it's cool but we're all here just trying to win games. A lot of it is credit to my teammates. It's nice, but that's more of a team stat than an individual one,' said Fried about reaching double digits in wins. Fried signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees last December and has excelled in his first year in pinstripes. He quickly became the staff's ace after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fried has four games this season where he has gone at least seven innings and not allowed an earned run, tied with Detroit's Tarik Skubal and San Diego's Nick Pivetta for most in the majors. He's second in the majors with a 1.92 ERA and 108 innings. 'Ever since (Cole) went down he's shown us why they paid him what they paid him and why he's the guy we thought he was going to be. Especially someone who I played against for four or five years, to play behind him now is amazing,' third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. 'I always give him his prop and his flowers, but now he can take them any time he wants.' The 1.92 ERA is the third-lowest by a Yankees' pitcher is his first 17 starts with the club since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913. Fried has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts. He has been even more dominant after Yankees' losses, going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts. 'I mean 10 wins in half a season, it's not easy to do in any era, especially now. But that's just a testament to how good and efficient he's been,' Boone said. 'Whether it's coming off a loss or extending a streak, his consistency has been great. 'I told him again today 'just watching you more and more, I would not have wanted to hit off you.' He's got so many weapons out there and there's just so much movement to all his pitches, he's been terrific.' Fried getting the start in the All-Star Game would carry more importance after he played eight seasons in Atlanta before coming to New York. Fried though knows that decision remains a couple weeks away. 'I've got a handful of starts to go before the break. A lot can happen between now and then. Just focused on the next one in five or six days. I will deal with it when it gets here,' he said. ___ AP MLB:
