Anaheim Ducks 2025 NHL Draft Live Blog
The Anaheim Ducks own the tenth overall selection on night one of the 2025 NHL Draft.
The New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens made noise hours before the draft when the Islanders sent defenseman Noah Dobson to the Habs in exchange for the 16th and 17th overall picks as well as forward Emil Heineman.

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Gavin Brindley, a 2025 third round pick, and a 2027 conditional second round pick.
There's a fair amount of uncertainty following the Islanders first overall selection, with rumors and speculation running rampant.
1st Overall: New York Islanders
Matthew Schaefer-Erie Otters (OHL)
No surprise here. Schaefer is the surest bet in the draft to become a number one NHL defenseman. He possesses every tool teams are looking for in a cornerstone blueliner: tremendous skater, offensive instincts through the roof, and his defensive fundamentals are well beyond his years, despite missing the second half of the season with a broken clavicle.
2nd Overall: San Jose Sharks
Michael Misa-Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
After some speculation heading into tonight whether they were going to stick with the consensus and take Michael Misa or go against the grain and take Anton Frondell, the Sharks select Misa with the second overall pick. Misa produced an astounding 134 points (62-72=134) in 62 regular season games. He's got every tool in the toolbox necessary to become a number one center and the puck is drawn to his stick like a magnet. He's a playmaker, he's a scorer, he's a puck hound. A one-two punch of Celebrini-Misa will likely give the Ducks fits for over a decade.
3rd Overall: Chicago Blackhawks
Anton Frondell-Djurgårdens IF (SHL)
Frondell gives the Blackhawks their own thunder and lightning one-two punch between him and Connor Bedard down the middle. Frondell is a detailed 200-foot forward who thrives in the hard areas of the ice and has the best release in the draft. The Ducks are going to have to deal with some deep and talented center cores in the Western Conference when it's time to contend.
4th Overall: Utah Mammoth
Caleb Desnoyers-Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)
Desnoyers is the center Utah needed behind Logan Cooley in the top six. He's another 200-foot, detailed, and creative center who can thrive next to newly acquired JJ Peterka. Utah is rumored to be one of the big noise-making teams this summer and they're already off to a great start. Desnoyers thrives in open ice and in small areas. He'll kill penalties and produce on the power play.
5th Overall: Nashville Predators
Brady Martin-Soo Greyhounds (OHL)
After a surprisingly poor season, the Preds earned a top five selection in this year's draft and took blue collar center Brady Martin. Martin was the Draft's biggest riser after his season finished and through the combine. Nashville has needed a number one center since their inception. I'm not so sure that center is Martin, but he'll win that fanbase over with his effort shift in and shift out. He's one of the most difficult players to play against in the draft and has a nose for the net.
6th Overall: Philadelphia Flyers
Porter Martone-Brampton Steelheads (OHL)
Days after acquiring Trevor Zegras from the Ducks, the Flyers select Martone as a potential glove-like fit on Zegras' wing. Martone has terrific vision from all areas of the ice. He thrives on the cycle as well as the rush and he is disruptive defensively. He's a big, skilled wing and could be the team's future captain. There's an argument he's the most NHL-ready prospect in this draft, so it will be interesting to see how Philly handles his development.
7th Overall: Boston Bruins
James Hagens-Boston College (NCAA)
Like Nashville, Boston had a surprisingly poor season and earned the seventh overall pick. They selected James Hagens, who I consider a steal at seven. Hagens is the center Boston craves. He's incredibly polished, a terrific skater, and has fantastic vision. The Bruins could be looking to retool or build up their pipeline or both. Whichever way they go, Hagens will be a perfect fit there.

Devers, however, is dealing with a groin injury at the moment, although he has continued to play despite the circumstances. Giants manager Bob Melvin downplayed the severity of the injury in an interview with MLB Network Radio on Tuesday. Advertisement 'It's minor and it's getting better everyday,' Melvin said of Devers' injury. 'He's taking some ground-balls over there. He went first to home the other day, which looked pretty good, concerned me a little bit. It was great that he was able to go full out.' The Giants are proceeding with caution in reference to Devers playing first base amid the injury concern. From a long-term standpoint, third base may not even be an option with Matt Chapman handling the hot corner. Chapman is currently recovering from an injury of his own, however. Still, it seems as if Devers will be limited to DH and first base moving forward. For now, the former Red Sox star is the designated hitter for the Giants. 'It's a minor issue but it kind of plays into the defensive part,' Melvin continued. 'You know, it's first base, you're stretching, you're doing some things that you do a little bit differently than you do on the other corner (third base)… As far as getting ready to play first base, it's probably pushed back the timeline a little bit. Advertisement 'But I think this week we ramp that up a little bit and try to get him ready. Hopefully pretty soon he's able to play first base.' Rafael Devers is a terrific hitter. Defensive uncertainty surrounded him with the Red Sox, however. His role seems to be more certain in San Francisco, but the injury is forcing the Giants to delay his first base timeline right now. The San Francisco Giants (40-29) have enjoyed a stirring first 69 games to their 2025 MLB campaign, and they have done so by understanding their identity. Top-notch pitching and timely hitting put this team in position to grab first place in the National League West, which it can do by overpowering the Los Angeles Dodgers (41-28) this weekend. However, the offensive component of that aforementioned blueprint is much harder to execute without Matt Chapman. Advertisement The five-time Gold Glove third baseman (two-time platinum winner) is currently on the injured list after jamming his right hand while sliding back into first base in a June 8 win versus the Atlanta Braves. He sprained ligaments in three of his fingers and incurred a bone bruise in his hand. Chapman is unlikely to return by June 20, which is when he is first eligible to come off the IL, but fans may not have to wait too much longer beyond that date to see him back in action. Chapman met with Doctor Steven Shin in LA on Friday and received encouraging feedback. He is apparently progressing nicely through his recovery and is in line to begin rehab exercises in roughly a week, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. Dr. Shin advises that the 32-year-old slugger keeps his splint on until that time. Giants will try to string together enough runs without one of their big bats Although the Giants obviously wish Matt Chapman was active for a highly-anticipated divisional clash with the Dodgers, this latest piece of information suggests he could gain clearance before July. With the lineup posting bottom-third production in several categories, his value is extremely important. Advertisement Chapman has a team-high 12 home runs and is slashing .243/.360/.452/.812 through 65 games. Unsurprisingly, he is also playing excellent defense at the hot corner. San Francisco manager Bob Melvin counts on him to stabilize the offense. Apart from the 2014 first-round draft pick, the team's only other player with an .800-plus OPS is Heliot Ramos. The Giants got by just fine without Chapman against the unbelievably dreadful Colorado Rockies, but outscoring LA could be an extremely arduous challenge. They will trust ace Logan Webb to set the tone on Friday night in Dodger Stadium. The Boston Red Sox already made the biggest trade of the season when they moved on from Rafael Devers. The team they traded the third baseman/designated hitter to the San Francisco Giants. Clearly, the two are comfortable doing business together. ESPN lists the two best players on the trading block as Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran, both of whom play for the Red Sox. While it is far from a guarantee that either of them gets traded, the Giants actually would make sense to work with again in a trade involving Duran. Giants' trade proposal for Jarren Duran Red Sox receive: Carson Whisenhunt (Giants No. 2), Rayner Arias (Giants No. 7), Carson Ragsdale (Giants No. 21) Advertisement Giants receive: Jarren Duran Their trade for Devers proves that the Giants are all in. They play in a stacked National League West that includes the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, both of which are loaded with star talent. The Giants shouldn't stop making moves, even after adding their Dominican slugger. The Giants are currently 44-35. They are only narrowly ahead of San Diego in the standings, and Los Angeles is quickly pulling away. While the team's outfield of Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, and Mike Yastrzemski has been solid, it hasn't been great, so they could use an upgrade. Duran broke onto the scene as one of the best outfielders in baseball last season. Duran played elite defensive en route to his first All-Star appearance last year. He also killed it with the bat, as he hit 21 home runs while maintaining a .285 batting average. His 48 doubles and 14 triples led the NL, too. His numbers are slightly down this year, but he has still already hit eight triples. Duran is a speed threat who can hit for both power and contact. He'd give the Giants a four-headed outfield monster and better their chances of winning this year's World Series. Plus, he obviously has familiarity with the recently traded for Devers. Advertisement It didn't take a huge prospect haul to acquire Devers due to his shaky relationship with the Red Sox. Even though Devers is the superior player to Duran, the Giants can afford to give up a few more high-quality minor leaguers from their farm system this go around if they were to deal with Boston again. Is Jarren Duran or Alex Bregman more likely to be moved? © Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images Neither Bregman nor Duran is all that likely to be moved. ESPN gives it just a 10% chance that the third baseman will be traded this year, whereas the outfielder has only a 25% chance of being moved. Bregman is unlikely to be traded because he signed a three-year, $120 million deal this past offseason. Not only does that contract carry a high average annual value, but Bregman could opt out of the deal at season's end, and the idea of him being a rental could scare teams off. Advertisement Duran, meanwhile, isn't headed to unrestricted free agency until 2029. The Red Sox may want to move him while he still has tons of value, as his breakout campaign last season could be looked at as a fluke if he doesn't pick it up soon. Even so, the Red Sox have no need to blow things up, so they'd be better off holding onto Duran. The team is just outside of the playoff picture, and a few buyers' moves could get them firmly in the hunt for a wild-card spot. Devers was traded not because Boston is looking to rebuild, but because his relationship with the Red Sox was fractured after they forced him to change positions. Don't expect either Bregman or Duran to be dealt before the trade deadline.
