TOKYO -- A new study found that almost 90% of workers in Japan still feel worried about work even after they go home.
The study was done by Juno Inc. and Daiki Sekiya from Tokyo Seitoku University. They talked to 253 workers about stress from their jobs.
Many people said their job is stressful because they must always show a nice, friendly face at work, even if they feel sad, tired, or not happy inside. Workers said this is difficult to do every day.
After they go home, many workers said they still worry a lot. They think about difficult things from their job again and again. For example, workers worry about angry customers, bad comments from their bosses, or negative talks with people at their workplace.
A young man working at a convenience store in Tokyo told his story. One day, about a year ago, a customer got angry at him and said loudly, "You are too slow!" The man said, "Even now, I cannot forget what he said. When I go home, I remember his words and feel sad again."
Daiki Sekiya said, "When workers think about difficult things from their jobs again and again, it gives them more stress. Companies must help their workers feel safe. Workers need someone they can talk to about their worries and problems at work."
Sekiya also gave advice for workers. "After work, you should do activities that make you happy and calm. For example, you can talk with friends, play sports, listen to music, or eat your favorite meal. These things will help you forget unhappy feelings about work and help you feel better again," he said.

Japan researchers identify gene cluster that could help prevent some cases of Alzheimer's
TOKYO -- A cluster of genes that could open the way to "tailor-made" prevention methods against Alzheimer's based on a person's physical constitution and other factors has been identified by Japanese researchers at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology here. Among those who are genetically at high risk of developing the disease, exercise and cognitive training can improve cognitive function, the researchers reported in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy on June 10. The results are hoped to be a step toward efficient use of limited health care personnel and budgets. A moderate amount of exercise and brain training is used at medical facilities and old-age care homes as interventions against dementia. However, the effectiveness of these measures has been seen in some but not others, and the cause of this difference has been little understood. The researchers analyzed the genomes of 3,962 Alzheimer's disease patients aged 65 to 85 and 4,074 seniors with normal cognitive function, both groups of which were registered in a biobank. They found 12,819 differences in the nucleotide sequences of dementia-related genes, and classified the patients into two groups: those with a genetically high risk of developing the disease and those with a low risk. The researchers then studied how cognitive function had changed over a one-and-a-half-year period while providing anti-dementia activities such as weekly exercise, nutritional guidance and brain training. Among those at high risk of developing the disease for whom measures were implemented, the proportion seeing an improvement was 3.6 times higher after six months than among those without the measures, and remained two times higher after both one year and 18 months. However, for those at low risk of developing the disease, no difference in symptom improvement was observed regardless of countermeasures. There was also no improvement among those with mutations of either the ID3 or LMO1 genes even with the preventative measures. Mutations of ID3 were seen in 36% of test subjects and in 2% for LMO1. Lead researcher Daichi Shigemizu said, "A new medicine for treating Alzheimer's disease has recently been developed, but its administration is limited, and brain training as a nondrug treatment remains important as a familiar countermeasure. We'd like to increase the number of treatment cases and improve the accuracy of identifying people who are expected to benefit from these measures."

Princess Kako meets people of Japanese descent in Brazil nursing home
SAO PAULO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Princess Kako, a niece of Emperor Naruhito, visited a nursing home near Sao Paulo on Saturday to interact with locals of Japanese descent, as part of her official visit to Brazil to commemorate this year's 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Welcomed by the residents of the facility, which houses migrants from Japan and their descendants, the 30-year-old younger daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko asked how they are doing and called on them to look after themselves. Established in 1958 as the first nursing facility for the Japanese community, it is home to some 60 people aged from their 60s to 100. The daughter of Japanese immigrants, 92-year-old Chizue Yuasa handed the princess a bouquet of flowers, while Koki Kumada, a 93-year-old migrant, expressed his excitement at meeting the imperial member. "I'm happy that she came all the way to Brazil. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, I was deeply moved," said Kumada, who used to work at a coffee farm in the state of Sao Paulo. Brazil is home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan, with about 2.7 million people living there. The first group of Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in 1908 under a government policy at the time to encourage emigration in the wake of an economic downturn and a growing population. But many died due to the harsh living conditions and exposure to malaria.
