Crawley Town 1 Newport County 2: Away win for David Hughes' men

County had to rely on more goalkeeping heroics from Nik Tsanev and some wayward finishing from hosts Crawley Town before Whitmore broke the deadlock against the run of play midway through the second half. Shephard, in his first Exiles appearance since May 2021 following his return to the club this week, sealed a first three points of the campaign with a second goal just two minutes later. The goals secured a first win on the road in League Two since a 3-0 triumph at Crewe Alexandra on February 8 and maintained new manager David Hughes' unbeaten record following the Carabao Cup win on penalties at Barnet and last week's 1-1 home draw with Notts County. (Image: Gareth Everett) Hughes made two changes from the Magpies draw, handing Shephard a start in defence in place of veteran centre-back James Clarke and recalling Matt Smith in favour of Ben Lloyd in midfield. Clarke's absence meant that fellow central defender Matt Baker wore the captain's armband for the afternoon and the Exiles back line enjoyed a fairly comfortable start in the Sussex sun as both sides took a while to get going. It wasn't until the 21st minute that the first real attempt arrived and County keeper Nik Tzanev was equal to it, getting down well to keep out a left-footed shot from Crawley's Ade Adeyemo. Dion Conroy had teed up Adeyemo for that effort and the pair combined again soon afterwards before Tzanev again denied Adeyemo. Hughes' men didn't trouble Tzanev's opposite number Harvey Davies in the opening half hour, though Lee Jenkins and Kai Whitmore both saw efforts blocked. Baker then also had an attempt blocked before Whitmore forced Liverpool loanee Davies into a first save eight minutes before the break with his right-footed shot was saved in the top right corner following a long throw into the box. Crawley went close again five minutes before half-time when Kabongo Tshimanga picked out Gavan Holohan, who fired high and wide from outside the box, and Whitmore saw another shot blocked at the other end after being set up by Joe Thomas. (Image: Gareth Everett) That was to prove Thomas's final contribution of the afternoon as he was replaced at the start of the season half by Habeeb Ogunneye - the 19-year-old Manchester United loanee making his Football League debut down the Exiles' right flank. The hosts had the first chance of the second half, 10 minutes after the break, but Holohan's shot was deflected behind by Jenkins. From the resulting corner, Tzanev was again called into action to keep out Adeyemo's header towards the bottom left corner. And there was a big let off for the visitors just before the hour mark when Tshimanga took the ball round Tsanev and blasted over the bar from a tight angle. Whitmore then followed Jenkins into the referee's book for a foul on Jay Williams and Charlie Barker headed over from the free-kick. Hughes attempted to stiffen up the midfield by bringing on Cameron Evans in place of Cameron Antwi, but the chances kept coming for Crawley as former Exiles loanee Harry McKirdy saw a shot blocked, and Reece Brown drilled wide. The opener came as something of a surprise then, when Smith found Whitmore who rounded the keeper to score from close range after 68 minutes. And County thought they had banished any worries about a nervy end to the contest when Shephard scored from close range two minutes later after a long throw into the box was flicked on by Baker. Crawley refused to lie down, however, and they did pull one goal back through substitute Max Anderson in the sixth minute of time added on. But it wasn't enough to deny the Exiles a rare victory in front of their travelling fans. St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell: What Robinson said

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "It was a poor game overall. We certainly weren't at our best today. "Motherwell passed the ball around a lot in their own half of the pitch without really getting anywhere and I take responsibility for it."We overthought the press a little bit and they were expecting us to press with real positivity and I don't think we did. But I take the blame for that. We probably complicated it a little bit. On the ball, as a group, we can be a lot better."But we still had the best chances of the game and arguably should win the game. There's improvement all round. Keanu Baccus was excellent. I thought Miguel Freckleton was excellent as well. Some good performances and others that can be a lot better, which they know."We knew they'd play a lot at the back. I imagine they expected us to press them more aggressively than what we did and, as I say, I take full responsibility for that. I may have complicated that a little bit more than we needed to, instead of just pressing in a straight line. We'd spoken about that at half-time. It was better in the second half."We took the ball off them on lots of occasions, high up the pitch, but we didn't take advantage of that press, unfortunately, and probably a draw is a fair result in the outcome."Even though we didn't play well, there was half-chances, there was decent chances. Our decision-making as a group has to be better and will be better."We're a more creative team than what we showed and players will play better than what they showed today. We know that. But, all in all, we take a point."
