Whittaker to face De Ridder at UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI: The UFC, the mixed martial arts organization — in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism — makes a return to the UAE's capital with a highly anticipated middleweight fight, No. 5-ranked Robert Whittaker taking on rising star Reinier de Ridder on Saturday, July 26, at Etihad Arena on Yas Island.
Former champion Whittaker (27-8-0, fighting out of New South Wales, Australia) is one of the UFC's most respected middleweights, rising to prominence with standout victories over Yoel Romero, Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori. Whittaker looks to return in impressive fashion with a dominant performance against the Dutchman.
De Ridder (20-2-0, fighting out of Breda, Netherlands) has swiftly established himself as one of the UFC's most promising middleweight contenders. Since joining the promotion in late 2024 he has showcased his elite grappling and finishing abilities. Most recently, he delivered a statement win by handing Bo Nickal his first professional defeat. De Ridder is rapidly ascending the middleweight ranks and aims to continue his winning streak with victory over the former champion.
On the same card, Nikita Krylov (30-10-0, fighting out of Kislovodsk, Russia) faces Bogdan Guskov (17-3-0, fighting out of Dukent, Uzbekistan) in a light heavyweight matchup.
Ramazan Temirov (19-3-0, fighting out of Karshi, Uzbekistan) takes on Asu Almabayev (21-3-0, fighting out of Almaty, Kazakhstan) in what promises to be a thrilling flyweight bout.
And Ibo Aslan (14-2-0, fighting out of Istanbul, Turkiye) meets American Billy Elekana (7-2-0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada) in a light heavyweight bout that is expected to produce fireworks.

Is this the UAE's most climate-conscious sporting event?
DUBAI: The Desert Vipers have released a sustainability match report outlining the environmental impact of their headline sustainability fixture, saying it is possibly the lowest-emission professional sporting event ever held in the UAE. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Timed to mark World Environment Day, the report details how the Vipers, a founding team in the DP World International League T20, or ILT20, say they reduced the carbon footprint of a professional cricket match to just 30.86 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, translating per fan to a low 8.6 kg of CO2 equivalent, a rarity in global sport. 'While mega-events like the Paris 2024 Olympics (emitted 1.59 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent) and Euro 2024 (generated 490,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent) understandably carry large footprints due to international travel and scale, the Vipers' match sets a benchmark in per capita emissions. At 8.6 kg CO2 equivalent per attendee, this may be among the most climate-conscious fan experiences in professional sport,' said Ben Hardy-Jones, head of sustainability and lead author of the report. Hosted during season 3 of ILT20, the Vipers match featured: 100 percent recycled team and fan kits, made locally; hospitality menus free from red meat, with reduced dairy; biofuel-powered pitch machinery; fan travel emissions limited to under 11 percent of total footprint; water-awareness labelling in hospitality menus; a digital reach of 15.4 million and more than 265,000 engagements, amplifying the sustainability message, with virtually zero additional carbon impact. 'As one of ILT20's founding franchises, we wanted to show how elite sport can lead on climate action without compromising experience,' said Phil Oliver, Desert Vipers CEO and recent Middle East CEO of the Year at the SPIA Awards. 'This wasn't just about lowering emissions, it was about setting a practical example others can follow.' Though the match was a finalist at the Gulf Sustainability Awards 2024 in the 'most sustainable event' category, the data and design of the match are now serving as a template for the wider sports sector, as the Vipers call on teams, leagues and venues to join them in transforming environmental standards. 'This isn't a one-off stunt. It's a model we're evolving every season,' Hardy-Jones said. 'Our report is open-source because we want change across the board, from stadium design to catering decisions. Sport has that power.' With ILT20 season 4 launching on Dec. 2, the Desert Vipers say that they are planning deeper sustainability initiatives and calling on the global cricket community to help make sport a force for environmental good.

Uzbekistan, Jordan eye World Cup berths as South Korea close on finals
HONG KONG: Uzbekistan and Jordan will look to secure debut appearances at the World Cup as the pair on Thursday attempt to confirm their progress to next year's finals while South Korea are also closing in on qualification. Timur Kapadze's Uzbekistan side take on the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi knowing a draw will earn the Central Asians a berth among the 48 nations in North America, while Jordan could also advance with a win over hosts Oman. The Koreans, one of Asia's World Cup regulars, will confirm their participation at an 11th consecutive finals with a draw against Iraq in Basra. Japan and Iran have already taken two of the confederation's increased allocation of eight guaranteed spots in the United States, Canada and Mexico as the top two finishers in each of Asia's three preliminary groups advance automatically. The nations finishing in third and fourth will progress to a further round of preliminaries for the pair of remaining slots while those in fifth and sixth will be eliminated. Uzbekistan sit second in Group A three points behind Iran, who play Qatar in Doha, and lead the third-placed United Arab Emirates by four points ahead of the final two matches in the third phase of qualifiers. South Korea, meanwhile, are in pole position in Group B on 16 points and a draw with Iraq in Graham Arnold's first game as head coach of the Gulf nation will take Hong Myung-bo and his team into yet another World Cup draw. The Iraqis, currently third in the table, need a point to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive as second-placed Jordan would progress with a win over Oman should Arnold's side lose to the Koreans. Oman sit in fourth place on 10 points, and victory over the Jordanians will keep Rashid Jaber's outfit in contention for a first World Cup ticket. Australia take on Japan in Perth knowing a win against Hajjime Moriyasu's already-qualified Group C winners might not be enough to confirm their progress on Thursday. Tony Popovic's Socceroos lead Saudi Arabia by three points with two matches left, meaning a win for Herve Renard's side away to Bahrain would see the remaining Group C berth decided when Australia face the Saudis next Tuesday. However, a win for the Australians against a Japan side featuring a host of uncapped players and defeat for the Saudis in Riffa would confirm the Socceroos' passage to a sixth consecutive World Cup.
