MC floats `49.89-lakh tender to repair potholes ahead of peak monsoon season

Indian Express06-07-2025
The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has floated a tender worth Rs 49.89 lakh for the repair of potholes and damaged patches on various roads falling under Road Division No. 1 of the Corporation ahead of the peak monsoon season, it is learnt.
This decision came in the wake of multiple incidents of road cave-ins and surface failures reported across Chandigarh due to heavy pre-monsoon rains.
As per reports, last week, a 35-tonne loaded truck sank into a caved-in stretch in Sector 43, Chandigarh, triggering concerns over the condition of roads in residential sectors and highlighting the urgency for proactive maintenance. The scope of the tender includes the use of ready-mix bituminous cold material for filling potholes and resurfacing affected areas. The work is to be completed within four months, and eligible contractors enlisted with the Chandigarh MC, CPWD, or other government engineering departments have been invited to participate through an e-procurement process.
According to the tender document, the estimated cost of the work is Rs 49.89 lakh, with an earnest money deposit of Rs 99,786, and it outlines the requirement of prior experience in similar works, along with a valid GST registration, financial solvency, and technical credentials. Contractors are also required to maintain quality standards as per the CPWD norms and ensure the disposal of construction debris to designated processing plants.
An MC official said that priority would be given to critical stretches, including roads around schools, hospitals, and high-traffic corridors. The move is being seen as an attempt to check the further road degradation and ensure safer commuting conditions amid increasing rainfall activity forecasted by the Meteorological Department. Civic groups and residents, who have long raised concerns about waterlogging and poorly maintained roads, welcomed the decision but stressed the need for long-term planning and durable repair solutions rather than cosmetic patchwork.
The MC's Engineering Department has urged contractors to begin work immediately after the allocation of work orders and complete patching before mid-monsoon intensifies. The Corporation will monitor progress and quality under the supervision of its Engineering Wing.
Meanwhile, RK Garg, a City resident and president of the Second Innings Association, said, 'With the city already grappling with road safety concerns triggered by recent rain-induced damages, this tender provides a timely intervention aimed at preventing further incidents and ensuring smoother urban mobility during the monsoon.'

Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe Launched At Rs 1.35 Crore

The German luxury carmaker, Mercedes-Benz, has launched the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe in the country, further strengthening its top-end luxury performance portfolio in India. The sporty, elegant two-door model combines the best of both worlds - the agility and sportiness of the C-Class with the space, elegance and status of the E-Class, says Mercedes-Benz. The performance coupe is priced at Rs 1.35 Crore, ex-showroom. The new CLE 53 4MATIC+ uses an upgraded version of the 3.0-litre M 256M inline six-cylinder turbo engine. The facelift generation of the high-performance engine, now known as the M256M, impresses above all with optimised combustion chambers with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, optimised injection and a new exhaust gas turbocharger. In conjunction with the new electric additional compressor, this offers an increase in boost pressure by 0.4 bar to 1.5 bar and thus a higher torque of 560 Nm in continuous operation and 600 Nm in overboost for up to 12 seconds. It generates a peak power output of 449 Hp. The powerhouse also gets a second-gen 48V ISG, and the transmission duties here are performed by a 9-speed automatic gearbox. There are five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes in total, namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The 0-100 kmph sprint takes 4.2 seconds, and the speed is electronically restricted at 250 kmph, but can be stretched to 270 kmph with the optional AMG Driver's Package. The coupe rides on air dampers and features rear-wheel steering as well. The interior welcomes passengers with the latest generation MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display and an 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display. Besides, the integral seats in ARTICO man-made leather/MICROCUT black microfibre with AMG-specific graphics and red contrasting topstitching combine sportiness with strong lateral support.

Mercedes says top-end car portfolio continues to drive growth in volatile mkt

Agencies Mercedes-Benz India Mercedes-Benz India on Tuesday said its top-end model range continues to drive growth for the automaker amid a volatile business environment. In an interaction with PTI, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer said that the overall domestic luxury car market growth is pegged at around 4-5 per cent year on year. He noted that demand is flattish as compared to last year for the industry. "Considering all the geopolitical developments happening around us, the growth may not be there as much as what we have seen in the previous years, but it is still there," Iyer stated. For Mercedes, the top end vehicle and core segments continue to grow while the entry level vertical has de-grown, he noted. "With eight launches in 2025, our top-end luxury vehicle strategy has been very successful, garnering immense customer response and elevating the desirability of Mercedes-Benz in the market," Iyer said."So yes, we are not seeing that double-digit kind of growth momentum that we saw in the previous year, but still, flattish to single-digit growth is there," he noted that while there are some headwinds, the industry is also witnessing some tailwinds, which augur well for the growth in the coming quarters. Iyer cited GDP growth projections and record GST collections this year as some of the positive factors."Obviously, macros are strong and they should not affect the fundamental position. But yeah, it's a volatile market, for sure," he added. The German Luxury carmaker on Tuesday launched AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe priced at Rs at 1.35 crore (ex-showroom, India).

MRF logs lower net on higher revenue in Q1

Chennai, Aug 12 (UNI) Automotive tyre major MRF Ltd on Tuesday said it closed the quarter ended 30th June 2025 with a higher revenue and lower net. The company said during the first quarter of FY26 it has logged a standalone operational revenue of Rs.7,560.28 crore (Q1FY25 Rs.7,077.84 crore) and a net profit of Rs.484.23 crore (Rs.562.55 crore). On a consolidated basis, for the period under review, the company's total income stood at Rs 7,802 crore (Rs. 7,280 crore). The consolidated net profit for the quarter ended 30th June, 2025 is Rs. 500 crore (Rs.571 crore). Despite the increase in total income, profits for the quarter ended 30th June, 2025, declined due to an increase in input costs, MRF said in a statement. According to the company, the first quarter of the financial year normally sees an uptick in demand for vehicles, and therefore sales to vehicle makers improve along with improvement in replacement demand. But April 2025 started with a tariff issue, which was followed by a war in May and then early monsoons. This led to subdued market sentiments. New vehicle sales across categories were negative or flat except for the farm segment, which was unaffected by any of the above disruptions. UNI VJ ARN
