Indy 500 runner-up Marcus Ericsson penalized, now 31st
May 26 - IndyCar announced penalties for three drivers and their teams Monday following post-race inspections at Sunday's Indianapolis 500, which included runner-up Marcus Ericsson dropping to 31st place.
Ericsson's Andretti Global teammate Kyle Kirkwood, who finished in sixth, was penalized down to 32nd, and British driver Callum Ilott of Prema Racing was dropped from 12th to 33rd and last place in the field.
IndyCar said in a statement that the No. 27 and 28 cars of Ericsson and Kirkwood were found to have illegal modifications made to their Energy Management System covers. In Ilott's case, his No. 90 car did not meet the minimum endplate height and location specification.
Ericsson, a Swede who won the 2022 Indianapolis 500, held the lead late in Sunday's race before Alex Palou of Spain passed him on his way to winning his first Indy 500 by 0.6822 seconds.
The penalties mean that David Malukas of A.J. Foyt Racing is now credited with a second-place finish. Mexico's Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren) finished third, Sweden's Felix Rosenqvist (Meyer Shank Racing) was fourth and Santino Ferrucci (A.J. Foyt) moved into fifth.
The penalized drivers must forfeit their prize money and championship points from their original finishes. They are allowed to appeal the penalties.

June 4 - Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker homered as Lance McCullers Jr. outdueled Paul Skenes, helping the Houston Astros defeat the host Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday night. McCullers (1-1) pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven on 96 pitches. He registered his first victory since returning last month from a two-year injury absence following flexor tendon surgery. He most recently won a game on Sept. 21, 2022. The Astros prevailed for the third time in their past four games while the Pirates lost for the third time in four contests. Houston posted its second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season while Pittsburgh was blanked for the 10th time. After receiving plenty of run support in his most recent start -- a 10-1 Pirates win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 28 -- Skenes (4-6) didn't get any on Tuesday. The Pirates wasted a quality outing in which he allowed one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings. Skenes struck out eight on 99 pitches but yielded a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh to Walker, who belted his eighth of the season over the left field wall. Houston added two more runs in the top of the ninth when Paredes hit his 12th home run 403 feet and past the left field wall off Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Pittsburgh tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Isiah Kiner-Falefa led off with a single. After Oneil Cruz reached on a fielder's-choice grounder, Cruz appeared to steal second safely, but he overran the bag and was tagged out by second baseman Jose Altuve. Kiner-Falefa collected two of Pittsburgh's four hits. Before ethe game, the Pirates reinstated second baseman Nick Gonzales (ankle) from the 60-day injured list. Gonzales started and went 1-for-3, playing for the first time since breaking his ankle in the season opener. Pittsburgh also recalled right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis and designated utilityman Nick Solak for assignment. --Field Level Media

June 4 - Justice Fitzpatrick, a four-star cornerback in the Class of 2026 and the younger brother of NFL star Minkah Fitzpatrick, committed to play for Georgia on Tuesday. The younger Fitzpatrick is considered the No. 3 cornerback in his class and No. 47 overall prospect by the 247Sports composite rankings. Justice Fitzpatrick, who attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., chose the Bulldogs over finalists Florida, Texas, Miami and Ohio State. He is 6 feet, 0 1/2 inches and 185 pounds. Before leading Georgia to back-to-back national championships, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart was the defensive coordinator at Alabama, where he overlapped with Minkah Fitzpatrick. Minkah Fitzpatrick played three seasons for the Crimson Tide and won two national championships in Tuscaloosa before the Miami Dolphins made him the 11th pick of the 2018 draft.
