Gupta replaces Allardice as ICC chief executive

Business Recorder14 hours ago
Indian Sanjog Gupta has succeeded Australia's Geoff Allardice as chief executive officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body said on Monday.
Gupta previously served as CEO of JioStar Sports, taking up the job after Reliance Industries and Walt Disney's $8.5 billion merger of their Indian media assets in November last year.
His ICC predecessor Allardice, who was appointed CEO in November 2021 after an interim period of eight months following the suspension of Manu Sawhney, stepped down earlier this year.
'These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen and opportunities such as the women's game scale in popularity,' Gupta, who took charge on Monday, said in a statement.
'Cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology deployment/adoption could act as force-multipliers for the cricket movement around the world.'
ICC chair Jay Shah said Gupta's experience in sports broadcasting and digital strategy would be invaluable for the governing body.
'His deep understanding of the global sports as well as M&E landscape combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan's perspective and passion for technology will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years,' he added.
'Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets.'

Carrier becomes latest global firm to sue India over electronic waste rules

NEW DELHI: The Indian unit of U.S. air conditioning giant Carrier has become the latest major firm to sue Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government over electronic waste rules that have hiked the fees manufacturers must pay to recyclers. South Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as well as Japan's Daikin and Tata's Voltas have also brought suits, which are set to be heard by the High Court of Delhi on Tuesday. All of the companies are seeking to have the rules quashed. India is the third-biggest generator of electronic waste behind China and the U.S., but the government says only 43% of the country's e-waste last year was recycled. Modi's government in September fixed a floor price that electronics makers must pay recyclers, which manufacturers argue is roughly three to four times higher than what they paid earlier. In a 380-page court filing dated June 3, which has not been disclosed publicly, Carrier said recyclers were willing to continue their work at the older prices and the government should not interfere in private dealings between companies and recyclers. 'The burden of the benefit being given to the recyclers has been put on the producers, which is unfair and arbitrary,' said submissions by Carrier Airconditioning & Refrigeration which were reviewed by Reuters. The submissions added that the rules will impose a 'huge financial burden' on the company. Carrier did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. India's Ministry of Environment also did not respond to Reuters queries. It has previously argued in court that the pricing rules are needed to ensure proper waste disposal and were a 'reasonable' intervention. The new rules mandate a minimum payment of 22 rupees per kilogram to recycle consumer electronics. Such rates are still lower than levels in the U.S where they are up to five times higher, according to research firm Redseer. Carrier reported sales of $248 million in India last year, its highest level since at least the financial year ending March 2020. Its filing said it installed India's first-ever air conditioning system in Jaipur city in 1936.

India captain Gill hailed after 'brilliant' Test win

Indian captain Shubman Gill leaves the field with a souvenir stump following his side's 336-run win in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Photo: AFP New captain Shubman Gill was hailed on Monday for leading from the front after India recorded their maiden Test win at Edgbaston to level the series against England 1-1. Gill, who notched a century in a losing cause in the first Test at Headingley, hit new heights in scoring 269 and 161 to set up a crushing victory by 336 runs which leaves the five-match series finely poised. It was India's first win in nine Tests at the Birmingham venue, following seven previous defeats and one draw. "New captain, new India", The Indian Express newspaper splashed across its front page. Gill, 25, became the youngest Indian Test skipper to register an overseas win in just his second match in charge following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. He eclipsed Sunil Gavaskar, who was 26 when he led India to victory over New Zealand at Auckland in 1976. Gill came into the series with concerns over his batting average overseas, which had been less than 30, but he has shut down all the noise by stroking a remarkable 585 runs from four innings. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar called it a "Shublime innings from the man of the moment," offering his congratulations for "powering India to a brilliant Test victory." Tendulkar, writing on social media, added: "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be one winner." Fast bowler Akash Deep took a match haul of 10 wickets after replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah as England were bowled out for 271 in their chase of 608 on day five. "What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled", Tendulkar said. Deep took 6-99 in the second innings, including bowling the world's top-ranked Test batsman Joe Root with a delivery that nipped away sharply and was called the "ball of the series" by Tendulkar. Batting great Virat Kohli, who also retired before the series, said: "Great victory for India at Edgbaston" and wrote that India had been "fearless and kept pushing England to the wall." "Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field... special mention to (Mohammed) Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled," he added. Former captain Sourav Ganguly praised Gill's performance and India's superior bowling attack, calling Akash and Siraj "workhorses". Indian newspapers had a field day with an outpouring of joyous puns. The Times of India said: "Deep's 10 send Eng to Drowning Street" and "Edg-bastian breached." Gill said he was happy "to lead by example" after his stunning run-spree in a series-levelling win against England in the second Test at Edgbaston. "Especially when you are the captain, I think you need to lead by example, so whenever there is another player in that situation, you can tell that player, this is what the team requires right now," Gill told reporters after India won before tea on Sunday's final day at Edgbaston. "That's what I wanted to do in this match. If a good ball gets me out, it gets me out. But as long as I am there, I want to play as long as possible," he added. India's first win in their nine Tests at Edgbaston also owed much to a superb display by Akash Deep. Given the daunting task of replacing spearhead quick Jasprit Bumrah, rested at Edgbaston, he responded with a career-best match return of 10-147. The 28-year-old's haul included a second innings figures of 6-99 as England, set what would have been a new Test record chase of 608, were dismissed for just 271. "He bowled with so much heart and skilfully with his lengths," said Gill. "He moved it in both directions, which was tough to do. He was magnificent for us." The third Test of the five-match series begins on Thursday at Lord's.

Tariff worries, Trump's BRICS swipe spark worst rupee fall in three weeks

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee slumped on Monday as uncertainty about U.S. tariff policies resurfaced with President Donald Trump's threat of a fresh 10% levy on BRICS countries compounding pressure on the local currency alongside peers like South African rand and Chinese yuan. Worries over U.S. trade policies dented risk sentiment across the board, pushing Asian currencies and equities into the red while U.S. equity futures pointed to a weak return from the long weekend. The rupee had declined to a low of 86.0275 per U.S. dollar during the session but pared losses to close at 85.85 per U.S. dollar, down 0.5% on the day, its worst performance since mid-June, when it traded in the shadow of a military conflict between Israel and Iran. In a social media post, President Donald Trump said the U.S. would start delivering tariff letters from 12:00 pm ET (1600 GMT) on Monday. In a separate post, he rolled out a wholly new tariff policy, calling for countries 'aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies' of the BRICS developing nations to be charged an extra 10% tariff, with no exceptions to be granted. Indian rupee ends nearly flat following choppy trading; forward premiums dip It was not immediately clear if Trump's tariff threat would derail trade talks with India and other BRICS nations. The South African rand fell 1% after Trump's threat while the offshore Chinese yuan was down 0.2%. The absence of progress on trade negotiations over the weekend has come as a negative surprise for markets with Trump's BRICS remark especially hurting the rupee, said Dilip Parmar, a foreign exchange research analyst at HDFC Securities. Parmar expects the Reserve Bank of India to step in to support the rupee if volatility remains elevated due to uncertainty on U.S. trade policies. On the day, traders also pointed to strong dollar demand from a large local private bank which pressured the local currency. A fall below the 85.80 level triggered stop-losses and accentuated the day's move, a trader at a state-run bank said. He expects the currency to weaken to 86.50 in the near-term in the absence of positive developments on the trade front.
