SCCL enforces total plastic ban, steps up green drive

Hyderabad: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) announced a complete ban on plastic use across all its operational areas and offices. SCCL chairman and managing director N Balaram made the announcement on Thursday, stating that plastic water bottles and other plastic items would no longer be permitted within the organisation under any circumstances. Speaking at a plantation drive held at Singareni Bhavan in Hyderabad, Balaram said the company had already taken several eco-friendly initiatives and had reduced plastic usage in some divisions. However, in line with this year's global environmental theme, SCCL is now enforcing a total ban on plastic products such as bottles, plates, and similar materials in all its offices, mines, and departments. Balaram urged all officials, employees, and workers to support the initiative and further advised them to reduce plastic usage in their homes as well. Highlighting his personal commitment to environmental conservation, he said he had planted over 19,000 saplings across Singareni over the years. This gesture, he noted, has inspired many company directors and employees to actively participate in tree plantation efforts. He appealed to everyone in the organisation to plant at least three saplings, and announced that SCCL would distribute saplings free of cost to all those interested. Reflecting on the company's long-standing green initiatives, the CMD recalled that three decades ago, summer temperatures in Singareni used to exceed 50°C. Due to sustained plantation drives, many of the saplings have matured into green belts, bringing temperatures down to around 40°C. In contrast, Naini in Odisha's Angul district, where SCCL operates a coal mine, still sees summer temperatures rising above 50°C. Recognising this, Balaram said SCCL will now extend large-scale afforestation activities to Naini as part of its broader environmental commitment.

Officers from 10 DPSUs, private organisations join IIM-Vizag's defence MBA

Visakhapatnam: Amid India's push for increased defence production, IIM-Vizag has launched its novel and first-of-its-kind modular MBA programme for officers in the defence sector. Approved by the dept of defence production under the ministry of defence, 37 officers from 10 defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs), Naval Armament Depot, and Geomarine Dynamics India Ltd have enrolled for the programme. The 10 DPSUs include Yantra India Ltd, Troop Comforts Ltd, Munitions India Ltd, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd, India Optel Ltd, Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Ltd, BEML Ltd, and Bharat Electronics Ltd. Hindustan Shipyard Ltd CMD, Commodore Hemant Khatri (retd) said he has been noticing a profound shift in the mindset of Indians. "Previously, there might have been a sense of impossibility or hesitation. Now, however, there is a burgeoning confidence and self-belief, fostering an attitude of 'it is possible, and we can do it'. This fundamental change is evident in a newfound willingness to invest, experiment, and innovate – the driving force propelling India towards its future aspirations. This conviction is crucial for the nation's continued progress," he said. Explaining India's economic turnaround and its progress across various sectors, including railways, telecom, digital transactions, chip manufacturing, defence production, etc., Khatri said that today's youth are expected to be the leaders who will shape India in 2047. "This generation has the potential to propel the nation forward, transforming it into a developed country and fulfilling the aspirations of 1.4 billion people. The mantle of leadership will rest on their shoulders. In 2014, India was ranked the 11th largest economy in the world and now it stands as the fourth largest economy. This is a testament to the innovative spirit of its people. I urge the participants to foster an innovative India, lead in research and development, and drive decisive, transformative progress," he added. IIM-V director Prof M Chandrasekhar reflected on the personal significance of the programme. "This programme is particularly nostalgic for me, as I fondly recall joining HAL in 1983 as a young trainee. I later moved to L&T. Defence sector experience, therefore, remains very dear to me, it is a solid foundation upon which I built my career. Today, India's defence sector is no longer merely tied to budget cycles or geopolitical events; it has become a strategic growth sector with sustained expansion. Industry experts estimate India's defence capital outlay will grow by up to eight percent annually over the next five years, translating into defence procurement worth over $130 billion or approximately 11.1 lakh crore. A case in point is the performance of defence mutual funds and the Nifty India defence index, both of which have outpaced the broader market, reflecting strong investor trust and confidence in defence stocks," he said.

HSL ship repair complex witnesses surge in dockings

Visakhapatnam: Once a quiet section of the shipyard with limited activity, Hindustan Shipyard Limited's Ship Repair Complex (SRC) today has become a hub of maritime action, operating at near-full capacity and fast becoming the destination of choice for ship owners seeking reliable and timely refits. The transformation of the complex stems from a renewed focus on timely delivery, customer-centric processes, operational efficiency and business process re-engineering. Currently, four ships are undergoing repairs at the repair dock of HSL -- ICGS Sarang, SCI Sabarmati, MV Tharangini, and Matsya Drushti. These vessels represent a healthy mix of defence, commercial, and scientific maritime assets, a testament to HSL's versatile capabilities and its growing profile across sectors. The pipeline for the upcoming months is equally packed, with INS Jamuna, RV Sagar Kanya, MFV Samudrika and Matsya Darshini already scheduled for dry-docking. 'The turnaround is a direct result of our commitment to timelines, quality workmanship, and transparent engagement with clients. Ship owners who have experienced our performance are now proactively lining up their vessels for repairs with us,' said a senior official at HSL. In fact, the demand has grown to a point where HSL is experiencing constraints in providing adequate berthing space for incoming ships. To address this, HSL is entering into a tie-up with its trusted and long-standing partner Visakhapatnam Port Authority to secure alternate berths for handling the growing inflow of vessels. This strategic move ensures that HSL continues to deliver on-time results without compromising on quality. As HSL steps into its Sapphire Year this 21st June, the SRC's resurgence adds a compelling chapter to the shipyard's journey.
