Nintendo reveal Donkey Kong Bananza developer and it's a bit of a surprise
Although they've always been one of the most idiosyncratic game companies in the business, most of Nintendo's stranger habits are tolerated, or even encouraged, by fans. But not their recent insistence on trying to hide who makes their games.
Around two years ago they stopped announcing who the developers are behind certain titles and made it hard to tell even once you played them, unless you sat through all the credits. Why they're being like this is a mystery but apart from being disrespectful it's made it hard to know what to expect from Donkey Kong Bananza.
Names such as Luigi's Mansion developer Next Level Games have been suggested, as possibly being involved, but it's all been guesswork up until now, with Nintendo finally revealing that it's the same 'team' behind Super Mario Odyssey.
They haven't made any kind of public annoucement, but we recently attended a preview event for the game and pointedly asked who was making it. We were told it was the Super Mario Odyssey team, but no clarification was given beyond that.
Nintendo refused to say who the director is or to clarify what they meant by 'team'. Odyssey was made by Nintendo EPD, with some help from external studio 1-UP Studio (née Brownie Brown).
EPD is the largest of Nintendo's internal development divisions and has many different groups, which are further subdivided into individual teams. Odyssey was by Production Group No. 8, which is based in Tokyo.

Taken as read, Nintendo's comment suggests that it is, more or less, the same team behind Odyssey that is making Bananza, but we can't help but wonder whether the word team is being used more loosely here, and it's actually the people behind Bowser's Fury.
They're also part of Production Group No. 8 and Bowser's Fury was a very experimental bonus title, released alongside the remaster of Super Mario 3D World. It was a little rough around the edges but appeared to be the work of younger, up-and-coming developers. More Trending
Nintendo never confirmed that but while this new comment has made it clear who isn't making Bananza, we're still very interested to know the exact people involved.
If it is Odyssey director Kenta Motokura and/or co-producer Yoshiaki Koizumi that suggests that a new 3D Super Mario game is a long way off – or being made by a completely different team.
There's so far been no hint whatsoever at a new Mario title and while Bananza does scratch something of the same itch it's a very different kind of game.
A sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is due out next April, so there's a good chance Nintendo is waiting until then to reveal anything, but as ever this new revelation only leads to more questions…

Nintendo Direct announced for Thursday but don't expect Metroid Prime 4
After weeks of rumours, Nintendo has officially confirmed a Direct presentation for this week, but it's not quite what fans were hoping for. A Nintendo Direct presentation for this week looked inevitable, between leaked game announcements and the word of various insiders, but now it's been officially confirmed. As announced on X, a Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase will take place on Thursday, July 31 at 2pm UK time and 3pm CET in Europe. It will be available to stream on YouTube. The showcase will span 'roughly' 25 minutes and feature 'information on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games from our publishing partners'. In other words, don't expect any updates on first-party Nintendo games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby Air Riders, or Splatoon Raiders. This might be disappointing for some, especially those hoping for a Metroid Prime 4 release date, but there are many unanswered questions regarding the Switch 2's third party support. More Trending We still don't have release dates for Elden Ring or Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the console, while Ubisoft has heavily hinted a port of Assassin's Creed Shadows is on the way. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. A number of Microsoft published games are also rumoured for Nintendo's system, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator. A PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 port of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 has been rumoured for some time as well. Beyond those, it's highly likely some indie titles will get shown. This might be where we get an official release date for Hades 2, following its launch in early access, or ports of UFO 50 and Blue Prince. As for what we know is coming this year from third parties, Star Wars Outlaws, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Little Nightmares 3 and Borderlands 4 are all set to launch this year on Switch 2. 007 First Light is also coming to the console, but not until 2026. Nintendo Direct July start time – how to watch and what to expect from the Partner Showcase
The Nintendo Direct July start time has been revealed, with the new Partner Showcase set to share new look at games coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 owners, get ready for a new Direct showcase, although the first-party offerings might be a bit thin on the ground. After nearly a month of sifting through alleged leaks and rumours, we're finally getting a new Nintendo Direct. However, it may not feature all the first-party titles that gamers have been eagerly awaiting. A new showcase is imminent, set to share the limelight with Nintendo 's partners, announced with just 24 hours' notice, and it could be quite the spectacle. It has emerged that despite the Nintendo Switch 2 2025 games list appearing somewhat sparse in terms of first-party titles that haven't officially been announced yet, and players still trying to decipher their Donkey Kong Bananza The Divide direction, a new Partner Showcase will be released online tomorrow. This will provide a fresh look at games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. It's intriguing, particularly given recent rumours of a new Animal Crossing, and this announcement throws that idea into doubt. However, we can still anticipate a fantastic array of new games for the system. We're still in the dark about Elden Ring Tarnished Edition and the Switch 2 port of 007: First Light, so it's possible we might see these games make an appearance, along with a few surprises. Moreover, following the reveal of Grounded coming to the Nintendo Switch at the last Partner Showcase, we might see more Xbox Game Studios titles making their way to the platform. Could we be bold enough to anticipate Oblivion Remastered? Regardless, there are plenty of reveals on the horizon, and the wait for the Nintendo Direct July start time is almost over. So, when exactly can we tune in to catch all the new reveals? Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Nintendo Direct July start time. New Switch 2 game leaks early as Nintendo Direct looks inevitable
Nintendo's much rumoured next Direct looks increasingly likely, as a Switch 2 game's announcement is posted early by accident. Several reliable sources have claimed a Nintendo Direct is planned before the end of July, and with only one day left, there's a nervous air hanging over every post from Nintendo. The company recently announced the return of Mario Paint with mouse controls and released a new eight minute trailer for its 3v3 wheelchair basketball game Drag X Drive, which will receive a free online playtest on August 9 and 10, ahead of its launch on August 14. With the Direct rumour hanging over proceedings, some believe Nintendo is rolling out these announcements now because they aren't big enough for the presentation (or, in the case of Drag X Drive, are too long to cover) – something which has been a pattern in the past. Beyond these announcements though, developer Nippon Ichi Software has really let the cat out of the bag. In a now deleted tweet (via ResetEra), the Disgaea studio announced a new rural life sim set for release on July 30, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game's name seems to translate to something like The Garden Of Honolulu and is by the same team behind underappreciated survival horror series Yomawari. While it's unclear if the announcement is tied to a potential Direct, or if someone at the studio simply had a mishap with the social scheduling, the fact it is coming out on the Switch 2 suggests it could be lined up for the presentation. There are other Nintendo-related rumours percolating in the ether too. Composer Manami Kiyota, who is best known for working on the music in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, posted a tweet saying she's working on a 'new project' which some have taken as a hint to a new game. I'm working on a new project together with wonderful creators from around the world. Please look forward to the official announcement!世界の素晴らしいクリエイターたちと一緒に、新しいプロジェクトに取り組んでいます😊本日のセッション無事に終了しました! — 清田愛未 Manami Kiyota (@manamikiyota) July 28, 2025 'I'm working on a new project together with wonderful creators from around the world,' Kiyota posted on X. 'Please look forward to the official announcement!' Shortly afterwards, an insider on Chinese social media site Weibo posted artwork from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with the caption: 'This goodbye is not the end' – a lyric used in the game's ending theme titled Where We Belong. However, there are some caveats to the latter. The day it was posted, July 29, was the same day as the third anniversary of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, so it's possible this was simply a celebratory post to mark the occasion. By that same logic though, if a Direct does happen this week, it's possible Nintendo is planning to celebrate its third anniversary in some fashion – possibly with an upgraded Switch 2 edition in the vein of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby And The Forgotten Land. More Trending The co-director behind Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has already said any sequel will be 'vastly different' to previous entries, so a successor feels inevitable, but considering the third game's DLC only came out two years ago, a brand new Xenoblade title might be a bit premature at this point. For comparison, there was a five-year gap between Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Even without a Xenoblade announcement, there's still a lot of evidence for a Nintendo Direct. Along with the above, a retailer in Malaysia (via Nintendo Patents Watch) has reportedly outed vague details on the recently announced Splatoon spin-off Splatoon Raiders, claiming it will launch in 2025. While it's best to take this with a pinch of salt, it's possible Splatoon Raiders could turn out to be Nintendo's big Christmas game outside of Pokémon Legends: Z-A – even if it is a lot more popular in Japan than the rest of the world. However, the original trailer for Splatoon Raiders didn't mention any 2025 window, implying it wouldn't be released this year. Either way, we shouldn't have long to wait, as an announcement for the Nintendo Direct (if it is actually happening) is expected later today. Although even if it doesn't happen a Direct within the next couple of weeks still seems likely. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
