University contract teachers' indefinite strike enters 4th day
Hyderabad: The indefinite strike by contract teachers has entered its fourth day across the state as of Tuesday. The University Contract Lecturers Joint Action Committee (JAC) announced a 'Chalo Osmania' call, encouraging contract teachers from all universities to gather at Osmania University on Wednesday.
At Kakatiya University, the strike continued as planned, with significant participation from students who visited the protest tent and expressed their support to their teachers. Former MP Sitaram Naik also came to the tent, expressing solidarity with the contract teachers' strike and urging the government to meet their demands and address the issue of recruitment.
The KU contract teachers protested by burning effigies of those opposing their demand for regularisation. On World Earth Day, they raised slogans such as 'Save Earth' and 'Save Contract Assistant Professors'. Meanwhile, the strike at Satavahana University is ongoing for the fourth consecutive day, with part-time teachers joining the cause.
At Mahatma Gandhi University, teachers protested and continued their strike, demanding immediate regularisation from the government.
At Ambedkar University, contract teachers sat down near the Ambedkar statue on campus, chanting slogans that called for their regularisation and immediate government attention to their demands. Similarly, contract teachers at Basara IIIT expressed their protest by putting handcuffs on their wrists and wearing black ribbons, advocating for regularisation and seeking intervention from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

‘Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be implemented from this academic year, says Social Welfare Minister
Social Welfare Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, who is also the in-charge Minister for the Visakhapatnam district, has said that the benefits of the much-awaited 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be distributed to the beneficiaries within a week. He took part in the 'Shining Stars' awards' presentation ceremony at the B.R. Ambedkar Assembly hall on the Andhra University campus here on Monday. The State government has announced the awards to the toppers in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Intermediate annual examinations for the year 2024-25. A total of 121 students, including 83 SSC toppers and 38 Intermediate toppers (six students from each mandal) from across the district, were presented with the awards by the guests. Each winner was presented a cash prize of ₹20,000 in the form of a cheque. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Swamy said that the State government will launch the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme this academic year and the amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' accounts within a week. So, students and parents need not worry about it. He said that from this academic year, welfare students of Gurukul schools will be given coaching on IIT and NEET. He urged students to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held in the city on June 21, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has said that Visakhapatnam students will always be at the top in education and other aspects. He has urged students to stay away from cellphones and IPL cricket matches during their student life for a better career. Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Government Whip P.G.V.R. Naidu (Ganababu) and others participated. The awardees and their parents expressed happiness on the initiative taken by the government to encourage students.

SP MP Ramji Lal Suman threatens nationwide stir if Ambedkar statue not installed in Gwalior HC
Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman on Monday threatened to launch a nationwide stir if a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, is not installed at the premises of the Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He alleged that authorities are preventing him from travelling to Gwalior, where he intended to raise his voice over the issue. Addressing a press conference in Agra, Suman claimed he and his supporters were stopped from proceeding to Gwalior despite their peaceful intentions. "We are being prevented from travelling not just to Gwalior but also to other districts of Uttar Pradesh. This is a direct attack on our democratic rights," he said. Suman expressed deep concern over what he described as "deliberate efforts to create controversy and disharmony in society". He alleged that even though the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court had approved the installation of the Ambedkar statue, the directive was not being followed. "This is not just a violation of a court order, it is an insult to the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar,' he said. Warning of widespread protests, Suman said: "If the statue of Babasaheb is not installed at the premises of the Gwalior Bench, a nationwide movement will be launched." He also made a controversial comparison during his press conference, pointing out that a statue of Manu Maharaj -- believed by many to be the author of Manusmriti -- is installed outside the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur, while Ambedkar's statue is being resisted in Gwalior. "Manu Maharaj was against the dignity of women and Dalits. And yet his statue stands tall, while Babasaheb, who gave us the Constitution, is being disrespected," he said. This isn't the first time Suman has stirred controversy. Earlier, he drew sharp criticism after calling 16th-century Rajput ruler Rana Sanga a "traitor" during a speech in the Rajya Sabha, which sparked outrage from political opponents. Suman said the current developments reflect the Madhya Pradesh government's worrying attitude towards Dalit representation and historical justice. "The message is clear -- certain forces are not comfortable with Ambedkar's legacy," he said.

Jharkhand plans staff reshuffle to balance student-teacher ratio in high schools
RANCHI: The Jharkhand government will rationalise posting of teachers in high schools considering discrepancies in teaching staff in urban and rural areas, officials said. Schools with a higher teacher-student ratio will lose some teachers, who will be shifted to schools in rural areas having less ratio. School education and literacy department secretary Umashankar Singh has already given instructions to the deputy commissioners of all districts in this regard. 'The decision was taken in the light of the fact that in many districts there were more teachers than the required,' an official said. According to the sources in the education department, during the review meeting of the results of Jharkhand Autonomous Council (JAC) Class 10 Board exams, huge disparity was found in the ratio of teachers and students in rural and urban areas.
