Contract teachers stage rally at Osmania University demanding job regularisation

Hyderabad: Contract assistant professors from across Telangana headed to Osmania University on Wednesday in the wake of the 'Chalo Osmania' call given by the Telangana State Universities Contract Teachers Joint Action Committee. Around 400 faculty members took out a rally from Arts College to the administration building as part of the protest. The protest was organised to demand the regularisation of their jobs and to condemn the 'arrest' of faculty members a couple of days ago during one of their protests. "Two days ago, police picked up 18 faculty members who were among those protesting at the OU campus and later released them in the evening. Today's 'Chalo Osmania' is organised to show our solidarity with the arrested teachers and against the OU administration for not allowing us to express our dissent by organising protests," said Anand G, a contract faculty at OU. After the rally, teachers organised a sit-in protest in front of the administration building. "We have been on an indefinite strike since April 19 with the sole demand of regularisation of our jobs. Today, the administration did not even allow us to erect a tent, leaving us with no option except to protest in the scorching heat," said Vineeta Pandey, who has worked as a contract faculty under the university for the past 23 years. University contract teachers' indefinite strike enters 4th day

Hyderabad: The indefinite strike by contract teachers has entered its fourth day across the state as of Tuesday. The University Contract Lecturers Joint Action Committee (JAC) announced a 'Chalo Osmania' call, encouraging contract teachers from all universities to gather at Osmania University on Wednesday. At Kakatiya University, the strike continued as planned, with significant participation from students who visited the protest tent and expressed their support to their teachers. Former MP Sitaram Naik also came to the tent, expressing solidarity with the contract teachers' strike and urging the government to meet their demands and address the issue of recruitment. The KU contract teachers protested by burning effigies of those opposing their demand for regularisation. On World Earth Day, they raised slogans such as 'Save Earth' and 'Save Contract Assistant Professors'. Meanwhile, the strike at Satavahana University is ongoing for the fourth consecutive day, with part-time teachers joining the cause. At Mahatma Gandhi University, teachers protested and continued their strike, demanding immediate regularisation from the government. At Ambedkar University, contract teachers sat down near the Ambedkar statue on campus, chanting slogans that called for their regularisation and immediate government attention to their demands. Similarly, contract teachers at Basara IIIT expressed their protest by putting handcuffs on their wrists and wearing black ribbons, advocating for regularisation and seeking intervention from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

Contractual professors intensify stir, call for ‘Chalo Osmania' on April 23

HYDERABAD: The ongoing protest by the contractual assistant professors of 12 universities across the state has further intensified with agitators on Monday giving a call for a larger movement to force the government to meet their demands. The Telangana Contract Assistant Professors Joint Action Committee has called for 'Chalo Osmania' on April 23, in which the protesting assistant professors from all the 12 universities will gather at Osmania University. The protest has been going on for a few weeks now in which professors of Osmania University, Hyderabad; Telangana University, Nizamabad; Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda; Kakatiya University, Warangal; SPR Telugu University, Hyderabad; Satavahana University, Karimnagar; JNTUH, Hyderabad; Palamuru University, Mahbubnagar; RGUKT, Basara; BRAOU, Hyderabad; JNFAU, Hyderabad and VNCI Women's University, Hyderabad have been participating. The committee leader Dharmateja told TNIE, 'We have been observing an indefinite strike for the last two weeks now. We have presented our demands in writing to the government several times for over a year now, but nothing happened and we are now calling for a 'Chalo Osmania'.' The contractual faculty members stated that the indifference of the government to their decades of service was depressing. They added that the government had promised job regularisation of the contractual teachers in the election manifesto and now it was overlooking its own promise by introducing GO 21 for new recruitment for regular teaching faculty in the state universities. E Upender Rao, one of the members of the committee, said, 'We have been working for decades in the universities, carrying the burden of administration and other academic responsibilities efficiently. We are very much qualified for regular posts as per the UGC norms and instead of giving due consideration to our service and contribution, the government is simply overlooking our existence.' The Osmania University faculty also criticised the 'indifference' shown by the vice-chancellor towards the protesting members by not allowing them permission to set up a tent. Meanwhile, 20 professors were detained on Monday for holding a protest at the Osmania University administration building. They were released in the evening. The major demands of the contractual faculty are: immediate withdrawal of GO 21, regularisation of all the contractual teaching faculty, dearness allowance (DA) and house rent allowance (HRA), salary as per the seventh pay commission and job security.
