Man United hold firm on Benjamin Sesko stance as Newcastle raise the stakes with new bid

Manchester United believe Benjamin Sesko prefers a move to Old Trafford over St James' Park, but the club are reluctant to get into a bidding war with Newcastle for the RB Leipzig striker. Newcastle submitted a second offer for Sesko on Monday worth €80m plus a further €10m in potential add-ons, in the hope of getting a deal over the line after seeing their first bid rejected. Newcastle want to secure a replacement striker for manager Eddie Howe as Liverpool pursue Alexander Isak, his top goalscorer last season. Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim also wants to bolster his attacking line, with Rasmus Hojlund 's future uncertain. But there has so far been no offer from Old Trafford as they resist the temptation to battle with Newcastle and potentially inflate Sesko's already hefty price. The Slovenia international, 22, has long been on the club's radar and is also a target of Newcastle, who missed out on Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool and have an unsettled star in Isak. Amorim's side had looked at Liam Delap earlier in the summer, only for the Ipswich striker to favour a move to Chelsea. They are still considering Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as an alternative if Newcastle win the battle for Sesko. The Red Devils are returning from the United States after taking part in the Premier League Summer Series, having so far made two key summer acquisitions. Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves in a £62.5m deal last month, with Bryan Mbeumo last week following in a move that could cost up to £71m after protracted negotiations with Brentford. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent switch. The club are still trying to shift Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia.

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus takes surprising knock at Luis Diaz - after the winger completed a £70m switch from Liverpool

Lothar Matthaus appeared to take a swipe at Luis Diaz after the Colombian joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool. Diaz made 50 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his first season in charge. He is thought to have first told Liverpool bosses of his desire to leave last summer, but the club held firm. They later made two separate attempts to agree a contract extension with the left-winger, but failed to convince Diaz due to a gap between offers and demands. Bayern finally closed on a move for Diaz last week, with a £65.5million move completed following a successful medical . However, while Diaz detailed his joy after completing a switch to the Bavarian giants, Bayern legend Matthaus claimed the 28-year-old had not been at the top of Vincent Kompany 's shopping list. But Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus claimed Diaz was not the club's first choice this summer 'Diaz is a good player, but he wasn't the first choice for this position.' The 1990 World Cup winner told Sky. 'We also received rejections, and Max Eberl (Bayern sporting director) mustn't forget that.' 'You can't just sit back and relax in your job anyway. There are still things you'd like to do, both on one side and the other.' Diaz made his debut for Bayern in a pre-season friendly against Lyon on Saturday. Kompany's side secured a 2-1 win courtesy of a brace Michael Olise with Diaz winning the penalty for the former Crystal Palace star's opener. Speaking following the game Diaz claimed he still has a lot more to give as he continues to settle at his new club. He said: 'I'll get used to the team bit by bit. I think I personally had a good game. I had chances to score, but hopefully I'll score next time. 'My first impressions are incredible. I'm very happy and feeling well in my first few days here. I'll need a bit of time to integrate and get to know my teammates so I can help the team better.'
