Digging deep: UVM soil testing center aims to advance VT research
Dr. Deborah Neher, a Soil Ecologist and Associate Director for SHREC, says growers usually have to send their soil to out-of-state labs for testing, which often rely on national data sets and are not always able to provide Vermont-specific information.
'Vermonters, we do a good job managing our soil, so we often get values back that say all of our soil is healthy and great, and we know it's not always the case. So, if we get more specificity on the region, we'll be able to give more nuanced feedback to the farmers,' said Dr. Neher.
The Director of the program, Dr. Joshua Faulkner, says the various tests can help farmers understand the ratios of biological organisms in the soil, carbon and organic matter types, aggregate stability and nitrogen availability— some of which determine factors such as soil fertility and flood resistance.
'It'll help them make decisions about their management, in their garden or on their farm, that will help maximize their production and the resilience of their soil,' said Dr. Faulkner.
He says they also plan to offer educational workshops, focus groups, and demonstrations to ensure that farmers can benefit from the research down the line.
'We are making sure that this information gets out to farmers, to people who can use it… We're very much one foot in the lab and one foot in the field.'
The researchers say, while they plan to connect with farmers involved with UVM Extension, anyone is welcome to send in a sample for testing. Dr. Faulkner estimates it will take them about four to six weeks to process each specimen.

Massive Monolith Found in the Waters of Papahānaumokuākea
On April 22, which is Earth Day, researchers studying the sea floor in unexplored deepwater regions of Papahānaumokuākea found something incredible: an enormous monolith nearly 50-feet high. The Papahānaumokuākea region is an amazing place. Located off the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, the vast archipelago has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world, and it is an absolute treasure trove of wonderfully interesting things. The researchers were part of a mission called 'Beyond the Blue: Papahānaumokuākea ROV and Mapping,' which aims to 'map, explore, and characterize ecologically and economically important unexplored deepwater regions of Papahānaumokuākea.' The scientists, for most of the dive, found what they were expecting. As they were thinking about calling it for the day, a volcanic dike loomed out of the darkness. 'This community was relatively consistent throughout, until the end of the dive when we found a large solitary dike feature that was nearly 15 meters (49 feet) of shear vertical wall running for over 11 meters (36 feet) in length but only four meters (13 feet) wide,' the dive log reads. 'The up-current side of this wall hosted numerous large Hemicorallium colonies with several large Primnoids corals interspersed.' Volcanic dikes are formed when magma finds its way into a crack in older rock. This particular one was nearly 7,000 feet down, and was covered in all manner of life. 'The waters in the Pacific Islands region span a diverse range of ecosystems and dynamic geological environments,' NOAA researchers wrote. 'They contain some of the last relatively pristine marine ecosystems on the planet and harbor numerous protected species, wondrous geological formations, and undiscovered shipwrecks. Papahānaumokuākea is a place of extraordinary beauty, known by a single name that commemorates the union of two Hawaiian ancestors – Papahānaumoku and Wākea – who gave rise to the Hawaiian Archipelago, the taro plant, and the Hawaiian people.' Pediatric physician addresses meningococcal vaccine
BURLINGTON, Vermont — Parents of college-bound teens have been asking pointed questions about the vaccine that more colleges are recommending to prevent meningitis in freshmen. The vaccine prevents infection from a type of bacteria called meningococcus, which can cause a life-threatening blood infection or result in meningitis, an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningococcus is spread by close or direct contact from the nose and throat by kissing, sharing silverware or glasses or through a cough. Studies now indicate that infants under age 1 and teens and young adults between 15-21 — especially those who will be living in close quarters with other teens such as a school dormitory — are at increased risk of getting this infection. If an infection with this bacteria does occur, one in 10 people who get it will die even with antibiotics that are designed to treat it or will experience terrible complications that can include brain damage or loss of an arm or leg. The Good News There is a meningococcal vaccine that can prevent four of the five most common strains of this bacteria or at least two-thirds to three-quarters of all cases from infecting children and, in doing so, significantly reduces the risk of their getting infected. A vaccine to treat the fifth strain is now available and a health care professional can determine the appropriate vaccine or vaccines needed and when doses should be given to protect your child or teen from meningococcal disease. Side effects of the vaccine are mild and the most common side effects are some redness or soreness at the sight of the injection and occasionally a low-grade fever. These Symptoms Could Be Early Warning Signs of MS, a Decade Before Diagnosis
Signs of a rogue immune system may be present more than a decade before the debilitating physical symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) reveal themselves. A new study found poor mental health may be one of the earliest hints of this disease, which impacts about 2.8 million people globally. University of British Columbia epidemiologist Marta Ruiz-Algueró and colleagues investigated the medical histories of 2,038 patients with MS in Canada and compared them to 10,182 patients without. Related: They found patients who went on to develop MS had presented to their physicians with symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anxiety, and depression more often than the general population. What's more, these clues appeared as early as 15 years before more established symptoms were first detected. The researchers also identified a spike in visits to neurologists and ophthalmologists around 8 to 9 years before their diagnosis. This was then followed by a surge of visits for physical symptoms in the lead-up to diagnosis. "We're only now starting to understand what these early warning signs are, with mental health-related issues appearing to be among the earliest indicators," says Ruiz-Algueró. "These patterns suggest that MS has a long and complex prodromal phase – where something is happening beneath the surface but hasn't yet declared itself as MS." Symptoms of poor mental health are common throughout the population, the researchers caution, and most people who experience them will not go on to develop MS. Still, if we can better understand how such signs relate to MS, it may become possible to identify risk factors and earlier interventions. "MS can be difficult to recognize as many of the earliest signs – like fatigue, headache, pain, and mental health concerns – can be quite general and easily mistaken for other conditions," explains University of British Columbia epidemiologist Helen Tremlett. The immune systems of people with MS mistakenly attack their nerves' fatty protective coating, called the myelin sheath. This can eventually lead to pain, loss of sensation, and loss of motor function in different parts of the body, as the connection between the body and the brain becomes compromised. Fatigue, vision disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction are also common symptoms. While viral and bacterial infections have been implicated in triggering MS, and certain genes appear to make some people more susceptible, we don't yet fully understand what causes the immune system to go rogue. Therapies can help reduce relapses, but there's no treatment to prevent the disease's progress. Previous research has also identified a pattern of MS-specific antibodies in blood five or more years before characteristic symptoms arise. "Our findings dramatically shift the timeline for when these early warning signs are thought to begin, potentially opening the door to opportunities for earlier detection and intervention," concludes Tremlett.
