Arnold secures first win with Iraq

Perth Now11-06-2025
Former Socceroos boss Graham Arnold has secured his first win as Iraq coach with a 1-0 away victory over Jordan in Amman.
While Wednesday morning's success wasn't enough for Iraq to secure FIFA World Cup qualification, Arnold's men will have another chance to book a berth in next year's tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada when they compete in the fourth round of AFC qualifiers in October.
'I'm proud of the team,' Arnold said after the win, which came less than a week after Iraq suffered a 2-0 home loss to South Korea in his first game in charge of the Lions of Mesopotamia.
'It was a crazy week, but it ended well. We rested four players to avoid suspension and will now focus on the (fourth round).
'My message to Iraqi fans – believe in us, we will reach the 2026 World Cup.'
The fourth round of qualifiers features the nations that finished third and fourth in the three third-round groups.
Joining Iraq will be the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Indonesia.
The six nations will be split into two groups of three, with the top team from each group to advance to the World Cup.
The teams that finished second in each group will play each other for the AFC's spot in the six-nation inter-confederation playoffs, from which two teams will secure World Cup qualification.

Super Netball 2025: West Coast Fever re-sign English captain Fran Williams as strong squad retention continues

England captain Fran Williams says she's thankful to 'be a part of the world-class environment' at West Coast Fever after re-signing with the Super Netball powerhouse for the 2026 season. Williams, 27, is the latest Fever star to extend her stay at the club, joining superstar shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard who this week also put pen to paper on a new deal. It means the defender will play in the green dress for a third season, having already played 32 games for Fever since she joined the WA side ahead of 2024. The West Australian understands Fever will lock away their final contracted 10 in the coming days, with fellow defenders Kadie-Ann Dehaney and Ruth Aryang both set to re-sign with the grand final side. It means Fever will head into next year with only one change to their main list, with 2022 grand final hero Sasha Glasgow returning to the club earlier this week to replace Jamaican goal attack Shanice Beckford, who was not offered a new deal. Midcourter Zoe Cransberg — who played in the decider as a replacement for the injured Aryang — is the only Fever player without a deal for next season, but Super Netball clubs cannot sign their '11th player' until after the free agency window closes on August 23. Williams' decision to stay comes after speculation the Roses star could be on the move as she looks for more court time leading into next year's Commonwealth Games and the 2027 World Cup in Sydney. She forms part of a strong defence that includes Dehaney as well as Diamonds star Sunday Aryang who is also locked away for next year. 'I am really excited to be re-signing with Fever for my third season,' Williams said. 'After one of the toughest losses I've faced in the 2025 SSN grand final, my motivation to continue to strive for more with this club couldn't be higher. 'I feel very grateful to be a part of the world-class environment here at Fever as well as have such good support from my amazing teammates and of course the incredible Green Army.' Fever coach Dan Ryan said Williams was a 'fierce competitor and a highly respected member of our team and club'. 'She's been such an impactful contributor on and off the court the past two seasons, so we are thrilled to have her in green for a third season,' Ryan said. 'Fran is as hard working and dedicated as they come and has really challenged herself this year to grow her game inside and outside of the circle. She's now a genuine triple threat for us in all three positions and whatever role the team needs from her, she embraces it wholeheartedly and delivers. 'She's an astute and unique operator and sets an incredibly high standard of excellence in our environment and I'm excited to see what she brings to the court for us in 2026.'

Davidson returns to Victory with silver on his mind

Socceroos defender Jason Davidson has set his sights on leading Melbourne Victory to more silverware after returning to the A-League Men club on a two-year deal. Davidson previously played for the Victory during the 2021/22 season, with his most memorable contribution being the stunning free kick that helped lift the club to Australia Cup glory in February, 2022. The 34-year-old signed with Belgian First Division side K.A.S. Eupen ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, before joining Panserraikos FC in the Greek Super League. Victory haven't won any silverware since Davidson's Australia Cup heroics, and the 23-cap Socceroo wants that to change. "Returning to Victory after three years in Europe is incredibly exciting," Davidson said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to working with a quality team and the wonderful new coaching staff at the club, with the aim of securing points and ultimately silverware for Melbourne Victory. "My time overseas has only made me more hungry for success. I intend to bring my best to the team, alongside the rest of the playing group, and help drive success this season." Davidson earned a surprise recall to the Socceroos squad earlier this year, and looms as a smokey for the 2026 World Cup. The fullback was part of the Australian outfit that won the Asian Cup in 2015. Victory coach Arthur Diles said he was thrilled to have Davidson joining the squad. "Jason has proven his ability to be a game changer in both the A-League and on the international stage," Diles said. "His ambitions and drive to contribute to success are perfectly aligned with the direction we are heading at Victory. "Jason has shown that he possesses leadership and understands the expectations and culture we expect at the club." Davidson joins Sebastian Esposito, Franco Lino, Keegan Jelacic and Louis D'Arrigo as new arrivals for the upcoming season, along with the re-signings of Roderick Miranda, Santos, Adama Traore, Kayne Razmovski and Luka Kolic.
