Spice of life: Life beyond report card, review child's progress

The close of the academic year often brings parent-teacher meetings, a time traditionally focused on reviewing a child's achievements. Yet, witnessing a parent's stern disapproval of her teenager's average grades recently prompted a crucial question: What truly defines how we measure our children's growth?
My mother excelled in academics and drama, finding joy in school plays and advanced studies. My passions, however, lay in writing and public speaking, which I happily pursued through debate and creative writing. My Gen Z son gravitates towards science and sports, immersing himself in Olympiads and table-tennis tournaments. While my mother and I thrived in our chosen activities within the supportive embrace of our immediate community, my son navigates a paradox of choice. He observes and competes with students and athletes from across the nation and the globe. Adding to this is the constant influx of information on trending topics for high-schoolers – financial literacy, summer programmes, sports camps, start-up fests, and finishing schools.
Every time he glances at his phone, he encounters children his age achieving extraordinary feats as spelling bee champions and sports prodigies. This constant exposure presents a dilemma: While some may find inspiration in these remarkable stories, others might feel overwhelmed by the weight of expectations from loved ones. Millennials and Gen X, in contrast, benefited from an upbringing enriched by the wisdom and stories of their grandmothers, tales filled with years of lived experience. They enjoyed hands-on experiences like playing outdoors and gardening, and the simple pleasure of evening gatherings with neighbourhood children in local parks.
So, while we readily assess our children against tangible metrics, how do we measure their character and values? It's no wonder we often characterise the 21st century as an era of high IQ but potentially lower EQ, a world grappling with unprecedented mental health challenges. But shouldn't we reflect on our role in shaping the next generation? Don't we owe it to them to emphasise a holistic education, one that values social interactions as much as textbooks and classroom learning?
The next time our children face a multitude of options, let us guide them towards choosing happiness, fulfilment, curiosity, and wonder. True success isn't solely measured in accolades and achievements displayed on a report card. It lies in the kindness they extend, the empathy they demonstrate, and the connections they forge within their communities.
Consider the recent pandemic, when daily routines were disrupted, and online shopping became the norm. In my neighbourhood, several elderly individuals felt disadvantaged by their lack of digital literacy. It was then that a 10-year-old boy took the initiative to teach a group of elders how to shop and browse online. In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, social change is no longer driven solely by political leaders, academics, or institutions. Increasingly, it is being steered by a younger, bolder, and more connected generation-Gen Z. What was once a slow, linear process of advocacy has transformed into a dynamic, fast-paced dialogue where awareness can be amplified with a single post, and collective action can start with a hashtag. Social media, particularly platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, has become central to how Gen Z communicates, organises, and activates around the most pressing issues of our time like mental health, climate justice, gender equality, racial equity, and body positivity, to name a few. But this isn't just about viral trends or performative activism. What distinguishes this movement is Gen Z's insistence on authenticity, accountability, and tangible impact. Our generation is deeply aware that change doesn't end with awareness; it begins there. The online world serves as the entry point, but the momentum is carried forward through grassroots organising, institutional partnerships, and community-building efforts. For example, at Equity Ed, one of our key initiatives, a mental wellness campaign in urban schools, was born from stories shared online. Students were opening up about the lack of mental health support in educational settings. We turned those digital conversations into action: collaborating with counselors, educators, and peer leaders to introduce regular wellness circles, anonymous help desks, and stress-relief workshops across several institutions. What started as a hashtag evolved into a sustainable model for youth-led emotional support. This is happening across the world. Climate strikes organised by teenage activists, mutual aid funds shared through Instagram stories, and disability rights campaigns launched via YouTube videos showcase how Gen Z is not just participating in movements, but leading them. We are rewriting the rules of engagement. The new activism is intersectional, informed, and deeply personal. Critics often dismiss digital activism as fleeting or shallow, questioning whether likes and shares can lead to lasting change. While this skepticism isn't without reason, it overlooks the power of networked solidarity. When used intentionally, online platforms are catalysts for education, community, and mobilisation. They democratise advocacy, allowing voices from marginalised backgrounds to be heard on a global stage often for the first time. What's also encouraging is how this generation values inclusivity and nuance. There is a growing culture of listening, unlearning, and rebuilding. We see young changemakers collaborating across borders, ideologies, and disciplines, artists teaming up with coders, students working alongside legal experts, and creators amplifying academic research. Gen Z is often described as disillusioned or distracted. In reality, we are discerning. We question outdated systems, challenge harmful narratives, and envision solutions that are radically empathetic. Our activism doesn't rely on hierarchy but it thrives on collaboration. We are not interested in temporary fixes; we are building new foundations. As the founder of a youth-led organisation, I am constantly inspired by the courage, creativity, and clarity with which young people are driving change. We are not waiting for permission. We are not bound by convention. From hashtags to headlines, and from headlines to policy shifts, we are proving that social impact today starts with a connected idea and flourishes through collective will. The conversation is no longer about whether Gen Z can make a difference. It's about how institutions, media, and society at large can support and learn from this rising force for equity and justice. While that film reflected the early 2000s mindset, Metro in Dino updates the narrative to reflect today's social shifts: Anurag Basu's storytelling remains emotionally grounded, but now it also mirrors how love has become more individualistic, nuanced, and sometimes fragile. Why this film matters now? In a world of fast swipes and fleeting connections, Metro… in Dino seems to ask a fundamental question: Do we still believe in lasting love? By showing various types of love—messy, slow, intense, and rediscovered—the film becomes a mirror for our times. It's not just about falling in love anymore. Can emojis aid workplace communication?

Almost nine in ten (88%) of Gen Zers say emojis are useful at work. They enhance workplace communication, spark the right emotion and help build connections, says an Atlassian survey. Atlassian, in collaboration with YouGov, surveyed 10,000 knowledge workers from the USA, Australia, France, Germany and India regarding their workplace communication and productivity from August 8 to 24, 2024. A joint report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Snap Inc projects that Gen Z already makes up 25% of India's workforce, a figure set to grow to 47% by 2035. But a general misalignment in communication practices between newer workforce entrants and their older colleagues is exemplified by the emoji debacle: less than half of Gen X and baby boomer knowledge workers think emojis have a place at work. This disagreement can ladder up to major cultural issues, especially in workplaces where written communication is the norm: Almost all respondents (93%) regularly communicate in writing; nearly half (44%) said written communications are their primary mode of contact, ahead of speaking in-person. According to the report, emojis are part of Gen Z's digital body language, a term for the day-to-day behaviours, such as how quickly someone responds to a message, whether they use emojis, their punctuation and tone. Digital body language is a crucial form of workplace expression and a key to forming enduring bonds. Dominic Price, Work Futurist at Atlassian, in a communication, says: 'The way we talk at work has gone through a full-blown transformation. Emails, DMs, Slack threads, Zoom chats—it's all digital now. And for a lot of us, that shift has been a learning curve,' explains In fact, Gen Z is 4x as likely as Gen X to experience unclear communication daily, and half of Gen Z respondents (48%) say they waste time each week attempting to interpret written messages from their colleagues — time that could otherwise be used for productive, mission-critical work. Gen Z brings a fundamentally different set of workplace expectations. Many of them entered full-time employment during and immediately after the pandemic; from the beginning, they have been chasing emotional cues in a context-starved world. As they look for jobs, approachable language is more than just a nice-to-have; it is an expectation. Gen Zers are motivated by emoji reactions at 2.5x the rate of their Boomer colleagues. Nearly two-thirds (61%) of Gen Zers admitted they are more likely to read messages that drop in an emoji or two.
