People Are Now Seeing ‘Zombie' Squirrels in Their Backyards
As if black-horned rabbits weren't strange enough, people are now spotting zombie-like squirrels covered in odd, sometimes bleeding sores in their backyards and parks. These sickly squirrels aren't zombies, however, but victims of a real viral disease. Residents in both Canada and the U.S. have recently reported sightings of the zombie squirrels, dating back to at least 2023. These animals are likely carrying a germ known as the squirrel fibroma virus (SFV). Though the condition is scary-looking, squirrels usually recover from the infection, and it poses no threat to humans. Colorado Residents Are Spotting Weird-Looking Rabbits With Black Horns and Mouth Tentacles SFV was first discovered in the 1950s and is a poxvirus, meaning it's related to the virus that causes smallpox in humans. That said, it's a part of a genus, leporipoxvirus, whose only known natural hosts are squirrels and rabbits. The infection causes the formation of benign tumors, or fibromas, to form across the squirrel's skin, particularly on its head or limbs. The virus is thought to primarily spread through the bites of mosquitos and fleas, but it may also be transmitted through close direct contact with an infected squirrel. It predominantly affects gray squirrels, though it can infect other species as well. SFV can be a dangerous disease for squirrels. The tumors can potentially metastasize to the animal's internal organs or become so large and numerous on the skin that they cause secondary infections or even hamper the animal's vision and ability to eat. But according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the infection typically doesn't cause any obvious signs of illness outside of the skin fibromas. And in areas where it is common, like Michigan, the virus hasn't had any effect on the overall squirrel population. In most cases, the fibromas regress over time, and the animal recovers completely. If you're a hunter with a hankering for squirrel meat, you can also rest easy. Even SFV-infected squirrels are apparently safe for consumption, according to the Michigan DNR. Still, the average person shouldn't try to touch or handle infected squirrels, or really any wildlife for that matter. On a little side note, SFV is sometimes called the squirrel pox virus. But this is also the nickname for a different pox virus (the squirrelpox virus) that predominantly affects squirrels in the UK. Adding to the confusion, researchers have identified other potential squirrel pox viruses in countries like Canada and Germany. All of which is to say: It feels like there should be a cleaner labeling system for these squirrel-related diseases.

Photos of a new luxury resort development have sparked a fierce debate about rapid changes across one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations. Over the last two generations, the population of Noosa has skyrocketed, and the once sleepy town is on track to grow by 19,000 residents in two decades. In years gone by, Noosa resident Faye Knight would look up into the towering trees and listen to koalas bellowing across the landscape. When she snapped several images last week, work to build the new 186-room Calile Hotel was well underway. They show an industrial digger clearing eucalyptus trees next to a yellow sign warning to 'Please drive slowly' because of koalas. While the habitat loss has left her feeling 'really sad', she's pragmatic about the change. Rental accommodation is expensive, and investment properties are frequently rented out as Airbnbs rather than long-term, and there hasn't been a 5-star resort built on the Sunshine Coast since the Hyatt Coolum in 1988. 'I'm not saying I'm thrilled by it,' Faye told Yahoo News Australia. But she concedes her own property was once bushland too, and more hotel accommodation is needed. Although a koala crossing sign has been installed on the Calile Hotel development fence, how important the area is to koalas remains disputed. Locals claim to have heard the animals in the forest, but because their bellows are deep, it can be hard to pinpoint the exact location of individuals. In a statement issued by a public relations company, the Calile Hotel's owners said that during the land clearing, only legless lizards and other 'small specimens' were found at the site. It referred Yahoo to koala surveys by ecologists in May 2022 and April 2023 that found no direct evidence of them using the site. 'Any suggestion of recent koala activity on this parcel of land is implausible,' it said. Rescuer claims koalas roam further than most people realise Understanding how koalas use forests can be challenging because, for around half the year, they are generally sedentary. It's from July onwards that most activity occurs, particularly around August. During this time, young koalas are forced out of their territory by older animals and need to roam in search of new habitat. The founder of rescue group Wildlife Noosa, William Watson, said he sees koalas throughout the region, including close to the planned hotel site. The moment my family of four arrived at Conrad Punta de Mita, just 45 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, I knew that we were in for a relaxing and memorable family vacation. For me, balancing activities with tranquility is paramount for most trips. Plus, with a tween and teen in tow, it's imperative to pack in the fun. After all, no one wants to hear the dreaded words: 'we're bored,' after shelling out thousands of dollars on a vacation. While keeping the kids entertained is a top priority, they're not the only ones who want to enjoy their time. My husband and I stayed in the separate bedroom, which also led to the ample outdoor space. I ordered a mouth-watering catch of the day, which left a lasting impression. Among the variety of eateries, we were able to find something on the menu to satisfy everyone's taste buds. My daughter is a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, so she was pleasantly surprised to see pizza on the menu at Paleta. The best part? My 11-year-old son's meals were all complimentary. Children 12 and under can order a dish from the kids' menu for free when accompanied by a paying adult purchasing a main course in the restaurant.
