Ryan Coogler's production company Proximity Media is thriving — and 'Sinners' is just the beginning

There was a time when the only person who believed in Ryan Coogler was his wife, Zinzi.
Back in the early 2000s, when Coogler was playing football at Saint Mary's College of California, he began thinking about life beyond the gridiron and whether becoming a storyteller could possibly be his next passion. He was told that if he were serious, the first thing he had to do was get the software that all scribes in the business use to write their stories: Final Draft.
But barely surviving off the scholarship money he had, he couldn't afford it.
"She bought it for me," Coogler told Business Insider over a video chat while sitting next to Zinzi, who gave a shy smile in response.
Five movies and two Oscar nominations later, it turned out to be money well spent, as Coogler has become one of Hollywood's top visionary filmmakers.
But he's not stopping there.
Alongside Zinzi Coogler and producer Sev Ohanian, the trio launched the production company Proximity Media in 2018, which handles everything from feature films to documentaries and podcasts.
Their efforts helped bring the 2021 best picture Oscar nominee "Judas and the Black Messiah" to the screen. They also teamed with LeBron James for the remake of "Space Jam" in 2021 and launched the popular podcast "In Proximity."
The three formed a close bond in the 2010s when Ohanian was Ryan's classmate at USC (Zinzi and Ryan, who have known each other since they were teens, married in 2016). There was even a time when Ohanian was sleeping on the Cooglers' couch while they were making Coogler's debut feature, "Fruitvale Station," in 2013. Five years later, the three went into business for themselves, forming Proximity.
"We were young people trying to make it in this business before we started the company," Coogler said. "We are a company that was built on that feeling of not being taken seriously because of our age and constantly being told we're doing it wrong because we want to do right by people. That has been the common theme; it's a blue-collar aspect."
That blue-collar approach has become the company's guiding light. While many production companies led by Hollywood heavyweights are locked into first-look deals at a studio, Proximity has taken the less-traveled path and is a free agent in the business. This has led to them being busy all over town, working with Marvel Studios on the upcoming "Black Panther" spin-off series "Ironheart" and landing Coogler's latest directing effort, "Sinners," at Warner Bros. following a heated bidding war.
"When we know we're doing something right, it's often when we can approach things unconventionally and not necessarily industry standard," Ohanian said.
But Proximity isn't focused on just the moving image. Under the leadership of Oscar-winning composer and longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson, the company was behind the soundtracks for " Creed III" and "Judas and the Black Messiah," the latter of which earned an Oscar nomination for best original song. The company will also be releasing the "Sinners" soundtrack. Meanwhile, Paola Mardo is heading its audio division, Proximity Audio, focused on continuing to grow the Webby Award-winning "In Proximity" podcast.
"We have had Jordan Peele and Michael B. Jordan sit across from Ryan, but the pie in the sky is to keep having those intimate and in depth conversations about how we do what we do, to just give perspective on the many different things it takes to put something on screen for audiences to enjoy," Zinzi Coogler said.
With a staff of around 25, the founders describe Proximity as a scrappy working environment fueled by the underdog mentality from which the company was born. They often hire people who, like them, once had little to no industry experience, just a drive to work in the business. This has led to Proximity's much-sought-after paid internship program.
"At any given time, there are brilliant young filmmakers and podcast makers that are in and out of our company getting college credit and getting paid to learn," Ryan Coogler said. "It has gotten to the point that some of these people have gone on to be assistants to major Hollywood players."
" Sinners" shows off the fruits of Proximity's labor. The genre-bending thriller, written and directed by Coogler and produced by the Cooglers and Ohanian, had the biggest opening weekend for an original movie since the pandemic, making $48 million domestically. In addition to handling the soundtrack, Proximity also used its podcast "In Proximity" to give a deeper insight into the movie and its themes, with its latest episode featuring a conversation between Coogler and Göransson.
"Our first goal was to make a film that would be very music-oriented if not a full-blown musical, and I think with 'Sinners' we've accomplished that," Ohanian said.
While "Sinners" is poised to continue its success at the box office, there's plenty more in the pipeline at Proximity. An adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel "California Bear" and an adaptation of the graphic novel series "A Vicious Circle" are both in development. They're also in production on an as-yet-unannounced docuseries following the success of "Stephen Curry: Underrated," which was released by Apple TV+ in 2023.
I ask Zinzi if she ever imagined that buying Ryan Final Draft would lead to all this.
"Not at all," she said softly. "I mean, we grew up with parents who had very practical jobs. I had zero expectations. I just knew it was something that he was very interested in and curious about."

As they raced to complete the blockbuster movie "It Ends With Us," one editor told another that he was shaking his head over Blake Lively's final-cut approval for her character's sex scenes. "SMH," editor Robb Sullivan told co-editor Oona Flaherty, according to a text chain unsealed Friday as part of Lively's federal sexual-harassment lawsuit against costar and director Justin Baldoni. In the chain, Sullivan is remarking on Lively having final approval for not only her own sex scenes in the movie, but those of the young actor playing her character's teenage self in flashbacks. The brief text chain, dated four months before the film's 2024 release, hints at the tension surrounding Lively's demand for control over the most sensitive scenes. It begins with Sullivan and Flaherty celebrating winning a PG-13 rating. "Woot!" Flaherty texts, to which Sullivan responds, "Woo hoo," and "I'll drink to that! Of course, I was planning on drinking anyways…. :)" Sullivan is not a party to the lawsuit; he did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Lively's 163-page lawsuit accuses Baldoni of sexual harassment, retaliation, and attempting to damage her reputation and her lifestyle businesses by orchestrating a surreptitious social media attack campaign. Baldoni has denied the allegations, including in a now-dismissed $400 million countersuit that alleged she engaged in a "hostile takeover" of the production. Lively's lawsuit is being aggressively litigated against by Baldoni and his co-defendant production company Wayfarer Studios. In mid-July, the judge ordered Lively to turn over three years of her business income records to Baldoni. Lively's lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial on March 9 in federal court in Manhattan. The text chain released Friday had originally been turned over to Lively's legal team by Baldoni in response to one of her subpoenas, according to legal filings. Dated April 18, 2024, it now remains redacted to hide the contact information of the participants. They include a "J B," who does not comment on the exchange, and does not appear to include Lively, who is referred to as "Blake." "Honestly, it's all about control," a participant identified as "Henny Grace" writes at one point in the chain. The text chain was originally uploaded to the lawsuit's case file by Lively's team as a sealed exhibit addressed to US District Judge Lewis Liman, the Manhattan judge handling the case. It was part of Lively's efforts to serve Sullivan with a subpoena. Lively's process server had been unable to serve Sullivan in person after five visits to his California address in mid-July, according to a July 28 decision signed by Liman. "The process server attempted to serve Sullivan both during the day and after work hours but did not receive an answer, despite lights and television being on in the residence," Liman wrote in allowing the process server to tack a copy of Lively's subpoena to Sullivan's door. Lively's attempts to serve subpoenas have been the subject of heated litigation in the last month. On July 26, Liman wrote that Lively has withdrawn her subpoenas to Google and X seeking the account information of five content creators who had been critical of her role in the lawsuit. The five content creators had all filed motions to quash Lively's subpoenas.

MrBeast's plan to reach a new generation of fans

MrBeast has been in the lab cooking up an animated show that he hopes will hook the next generation on his videos. The world's biggest YouTuber announced a new anime-style series coming in October called "MrBeast Lab: The Descent," based on a wildly popular toy line he launched last summer. MrBeast and his team partnered with Australia-based Moose Toys for both the animated show and his "MrBeast Lab" toys. Those action figures debuted last July and became the best-selling new toy property in 2024 across 12 leading global markets tracked by retail sales data provider Circana, the company confirmed to Business Insider. Stephen Davis, the chief franchise officer at Moose Toys, told BI that his team had been talking with MrBeast about making an animated series for a while. The success of their MrBeast-inspired toys last holiday season convinced both sides to make an animated series that would fuel sales for new versions of their toys — and vice versa. "With the launch of this next product line, it was the right time to now move into animation," Davis said. Besides generating millions of YouTube views and selling tons of toys, MrBeast — whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson — is moving into animation to grow his already-massive audience, specifically by introducing himself to younger viewers. "We wanted to create a show that was as inviting to a younger demo as it was to an older demo," Davis said. Growing the tent to fit Gen Alpha Animation isn't just for kids, as the recent breakout success of Netflix's "Kpop Demon Hunters" demonstrates. Davis emphasized that point, saying that the "MrBeast Lab" show's "modern anime flavor" could help expand the fandom while also appealing to MrBeast's current YouTube subscriber base of over 418 million. Still, industry insiders told BI they thought viewership for MrBeast's animated show would skew younger than his Gen Z -heavy following. "He's filling a white space for his audience," said Amanda Cioletti, the VP of content and strategy for the licensing group at market-making firm Informa Markets. Gen Alpha children, between the ages of one and 15, appear to be a target demographic for this cartoon. Davis said the audience for the "MrBeast Lab" action figures is kids ages six and older, though he added adults in the so-called "kid-ult" community also buy the toys. MrBeast isn't the only content creator who's dabbling in toys. Kid-focused YouTubers like Ms. Rachel, Ryan of "Ryan's World," and the girl from "Kids Diana Show" have toy lines to reach preschoolers. STEM YouTuber Mark Rober, whose audience is older, is also getting into the mix, with a toy line from Moose Toys coming in 2026. More than a cash grab MrBeast and Moose Toys dream of a virtuous cycle in which toy sales spark interest in their show, and the other way around. Cioletti said that MrBeast likely launched the toys first to feel out the market before making the cartoon. While toy sales data from Circana suggests that the MrBeast-Moose Toys tie-up is lucrative, Davis declined to comment on the terms or structure of his firm's partnership with MrBeast. Klecker said MrBeast's approach to brand building shows he's focused on staying power across generations. "What I appreciate about what MrBeast does is there isn't a 'label slap,'" Klecker said, referring to a hasty money grab trading on a famous name. "He's very thoughtful, it seems, about his brand building and his brand strategy." Smart brand partnerships fulfill unmet needs, she said, adding that MrBeast seems to be on the right track so far.

You know " main character syndrome?" The phenomenon/meme that posits that certain people go about life like they're the stars of their own private TV show? Gen X, broadly speaking, is suffering from a perpetual case of whatever the opposite of that is. They're the cool kids in the back of the classroom who act so chill that the teacher, the principal, the lunch lady, and all the other kids barely notice they're there. Gen Xers — people born from 1965 to 1980 — have a reputation for being the " forgotten generation." When the discussion of generations comes up in popular culture, work, or the media, it tends to be framed as baby boomers vs. millennials or millennials vs. Gen Z. Gen Xers are sort of just squashed in there, if they come up at all. To be totally transparent, we here at Business Insider play into this, too: We've published 166 stories about Gen Z, 123 stories about millennials, and 97 stories about boomers this year, while we've touched on Gen X only 34 times. And in many cases, Gen X has been a footnote in the story. It's complicated to unpack why Gen X is so overlooked and what it all means. Some of it's a question of numbers. Gen Xers are sandwiched between two giant, transformational generations. In some ways, they're a transitional bridge between them. "It's almost like Gen X was a journey from boomer to millennial, and it wasn't a destination at any point," says Jason Salmon, a standup comic whose comedy often focuses on the plight of Gen X. Online, he jokes, younger generations identify themselves with pronouns, and older generations do flags, but "we're in this middle ground, where there's no emoji for concert T-shirts." Some of Gen X's discourse disappearing act is contextual. Many Gen Xers, famously, were latchkey kids, often left to their own devices after school while their parents were at work. They grew up in the 1990s, a solid time for the US economically, but also an era of transition in technology, politics, and culture. They idolized Luke Skywalker as kids and then came of age with Kurt Cobain, a shift from romantic heroism to grunge cynicism. Whereas boomers were the " me generation" and millennials were the "me me me generation," Gen X has become the "meh" generation. "We historically have wanted to kind of fly under the radar," says Erin Mantz, the founder of Gen X Girls Grow Up, a blog and Facebook group for Gen X women. "We kind of were like, 'Whatever.'" Gen X's "whatever" attitude has translated to a society that's perpetually a little "whatever" about them. When I called up Megan Gerhardt, a professor of leadership and management at Miami University who's a Gen Xer herself, to ask for her take on the whole forgotten generation thing, I floated the idea that maybe a lot of it was about middle age. Gen X right now is 44 to 60, in the throes of what's supposed to be the most miserable era of life. Is the problem that talking about it too much would just be depressing? Gerhardt shoots down my thesis immediately. "It's kind of on brand that Gen X is overlooked," says Gerhardt, who is also the author of the book "Gentelligence: The Revolutionary Approach to Leading an Intergenerational Workforce." A big part of the issue is that the generation never became the most dominant force, population-wise. Millennials surpassed boomers as the US's largest generation years ago — Gen X never got there. "I don't think Gen X had as significant of a ripple because of the statistical side," she says. Another statistical issue: Gen X was the "least supervised" generation, she says. In many households, they were the first cohort of kids to have both parents working outside the home, and it happened at a time before they'd figured out day care entirely or helicopter parenting was in vogue. This meant many Gen Xers had to be more independent and autonomous. There was no tech for their parents to track them or cellphones to even reach them. Gen X kids were expected to watch TV after school and put dinner in the oven before Mom and Dad got home. They were the "supporting actors" in the family, Gerhardt says, not the focal point. It's kind of on brand that Gen X is overlooked. Jean Twenge, the Gen X author of "Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents — and What They Mean for America's Future," tells me many people of her generation say they don't feel as distinctive as the groups above or below them. Gen X's psychological profile tracks a shift across generations, she says, "when you look at, say, increases in positive self-views and individualism that grew steadily from boomers to Gen Xers to millennials." Citing the American Freshman Survey, which tracks the attitudes of incoming college freshmen in the US, Twenge notes that from boomers to Gen X to millennials, young people have become more focused on their financial well-being than developing a meaningful philosophy of life and have become likelier to think they're above average. Gen X was the transitional phase from one mindset to the other. This dynamic has left Gen X with a sort of generational middle-child syndrome. They feel overlooked and stuck between self-centered boomer parents above them and perhaps even more self-centered up-and-comer millennials behind them. But they're also good at figuring stuff out on their own, and a lot of them say they'd really rather be left alone. "We're super proud of how independent and resourceful we are," Mantz says. The ambivalent attitude Gen X embodies is appealing. Part of Salmon's Gen X routine is that the generation's slogan is, "I don't care," which can be empowering but also presents problems at work and for people just trying to muddle through life. Gen Xers were the first generation to reject the baby boomer work ethic and rat race. There's a reason movies such as "The Breakfast Club," "Slackers," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Reality Bites," and "Office Space" have come to epitomize them. That's good in that there's more to life than work, but it's also difficult when there's a super-hungry generation coming up right behind you. As much as millennials prioritize work-life balance, they also want to get ahead, and their employers have been happy to help them get there. "When millennials came to the workplace, they brought that hustle culture of you work hard and you go for it, anything's possible for you," Gerhardt says. Many businesses created fast-track programs to get millennials into leadership, which often leapfrogged the Gen Xers in the room for some positions. It's left Gen X in a mediator role within the hierarchy and in a weird limbo. Given their age, Gen Xers do occupy the C-suite — about half of Fortune 500 CEOs are Gen Xers — but millennials now make up the largest share of managers in the workforce overall. As the Wall Street Journal notes, people in their 50s are losing share of CEO spots in the Russell 3000. Many Gen Xers feel like they're stuck with a boomer executive who won't retire or a millennial young gun who shot to the front of the line. They're the translators between the old and the young, trying to find common ground. It's worth pointing out that we haven't had a Gen X president yet, either — the cohort is more of a victim of America's political gerontocracy problem than anyone. Mantz says part of the reason she started her community for Gen X women was to try to get them to make a little more noise and get themselves into positions of power, despite their low-key inclinations. One part of the Gen X wealth story is they really took a hit from the financial crisis in 2007, 2008, at a time when they were just starting to build wealth. "We're having to shift gears. We are being forgotten. We're being taken for granted," she says. "We are such a strong and steady force at work, and if we don't start changing the way we amplify our generation, we will continue to be overlooked." Gen Xers also aren't particularly happy, and again, not just because they're middle-aged. Frank Infurna, a psychology professor at Arizona State University, tells me that Gen Xers in the US are reporting higher levels of loneliness, more depressive symptoms, and poorer physical health than other generations. He says their cognition is worse, too. He chalks it up to a variety of factors. Gen X started working during the transition from pensions to 401(k)s, when the onus for retirement savings switched from employers to employees, and many workers were still figuring the system out. They're the first generation raising kids in today's hypercompetitive educational environment, with all the pressures to make sure your children succeed. They've also lived through a lot of economic upheaval, even if we don't always talk about it. "They've dealt with the dot-com bubble burst, the Great Recession, and it's like, can you just have some stability when it comes to these big economic events?" Infurna says. Jeremy Horpedahl, an economist at the University of Central Arkansas who studies wealth across generations, echoes the point. "One part of the Gen X wealth story is they really took a hit from the financial crisis in 2007, 2008, at a time when they were just starting to build wealth," he says. "They have recovered since then, but it took a long time for them to catch back up to where baby boomers were at the same point in their life." The vibe from Gen Xers on their neglected status is mixed. On the one hand, a lot of them are fine doing their own thing. On the other hand, it's not particularly fun to have your experiences constantly erased from the narrative. It's not the case that Gen X hasn't left its mark on American culture. I think there's an argument to be made that in many ways it's more significant than boomers and millennials, but much of what Gen Xers have contributed doesn't get pinned to their age as much as other generations. " Friends" is Gen X, but nowadays doesn't really code as such. The same goes for " Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and " The X-Files" and " The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." They don't feel as generationally specific as, say, " Girls" or " M*A*S*H." Angelina Jolie is Gen X, as are Jennifer Aniston, Ethan Hawke, Will Smith, and we'll count Brad Pitt, too. We see them as the big movie stars, not the big movie stars of a certain era or age. Facebook's cofounder Mark Zuckerberg: solidly millennial. Apple's Steve Jobs: boomer. Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin: Gen X, which I bet you never even thought about. To be sure, this isn't true in every arena. Beck, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam epitomize Gen X music culture, like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé do millennials these days. Gen X also got a bit of a nostalgia hit over the past few years, which millennials are only getting a taste of now and Gen Z is about 10 years away from. This may be the millennial in me talking — after all, Gen X teens were my "cool kids" growing up — but Gen Xers getting to fly under the radar does seem like a solid deal. Maybe they're not managers at work, but middle managers are getting phased out anyway, and besides the pay, being in charge of everything doesn't seem that awesome in terms of actually enjoying life. They don't get blamed for ruining everything like millennials do because they eat avocado toast, or Gen Zers because they stare weirdly. Gen X has a sort of soft power that comes with people not paying attention to you all the time. And they got to experience life before the internet, which, what a joy! They know how to adapt to technology, but they're also aware it can be tricky. "Before we got the internet, we got Terminator," Salmon says. Perhaps Gen X is finally about to have its moment in the sun, politically, culturally, etc. The '90s are making a comeback, after all. If not, whatever.
