Philadelphia police officer shot near Overbrook High School to be released from hospital

CBS News22-05-2025
The Philadelphia police officer who was shot trying to break up a large fight outside Overbrook High School earlier this month is being released from the hospital on Thursday.
The officer's identity has yet to be publicly released. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said he had recently graduated from the academy and had been on the job for only a few months.
The shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, after police responded to several fights breaking out outside the West Philadelphia high school.
Dachan Seay, the alleged shooter, was arrested at the scene and charged the next day with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, illegal gun possession, reckless endangerment and related offenses.
Police said Seay was called to the scene by someone or multiple people who were involved in the fights. Seay allegedly was armed with a Ruger-57 and is accused of firing the gun with a rifle round into the ground. Investigators said the cartridge ricocheted and struck the officer under his bulletproof vest.
Bethel said that on the day of the shooting, the officer didn't realize he was shot at first, but then he was rushed to the hospital and into surgery. On May 8, Bethel said the officer was out of surgery but suffered a significant injury.
No Philadelphia police officers fired their weapons during the incident, Bethel said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Memphis man shoots wife then drives her to hospital — but stops for beer along the way: cops

A man in Memphis shot his wife in the gut and then drove her to the hospital — but stopped to pick up a beer along the way, according to local officials. Decarlo Pitchford, 51, pulled the gun on his wife when they got into an argument on July 19 at their Tennessee home after the woman threatened to leave him, Law and Crime reported. 'I told you stop playing with me,' he allegedly said before pulling the trigger of his Ruger handgun. Advertisement Decarlo Pitchford, 51, allegedly stopped for a beer while driving his wife, who he shot, to the hospital. Shelby County Sheriff's Office Pitchford popped one 9mm slug into the abdomen of his wife and then played the role of dutiful husband and drove her towards Methodist University Hospital in his dodge ram. On the way to the emergency room, Pitchford stopped to pick himself up a beer, according to a Shelby County District Attorney's Office Facebook post. Police didn't say exactly where he stopped or for how long. Advertisement PItchford claimed to police that he thought the gun was jammed and fired it accidentally, but the victim stated the shooting was intentional, according to the report. He was charged with attempted murder in the second degree, domestic assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and theft of property, court records revealed.

3 dead, 10 injured in South Philadelphia shooting; person is in custody, police say

PHILADELPHIA -- Three people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting early Monday in a South Philadelphia neighborhood, authorities said. The three people who died were adults, and two of the wounded were juveniles, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told reporters. The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. along a residential street in Grays Ferry, he said. 'We have numerous rounds that were shot on the block,' Bethel said. Police said one person with a weapon was taken into custody. Bethel said police had already responded to the same block late Saturday into early Sunday and some arrests were made. It wasn't immediately known what prompted the shooting. 'This is coward, want-to-be-thugs stuff,' Bethel said. The shooting happened after other shootings in the city and elsewhere around the U.S. over the Fourth of July weekend. Those included at least eight people struck by gunfire near a South Philadelphia nightclub.
