Clayborn Temple leader: Fire at home could be connected
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The director of Clayborn Temple says she thinks there could be a connection between the fire that destroyed the historic church, and fires at her home and near her family's land.
Anasa Troutman, founder and executive director of Historic Clayborn Temple, says she suffered a fire at her home April 12. Another fire hit land near her family's property in East Tennessee April 14.
Clayborn Temple went up in flames April 28.
'It's difficult to imagine that they're not connected,' Troutman said. 'I've tried to convince myself that this was all a crazy coincidence.'
Still, she added, there has been no connection made among the three fires, and it may in fact be a coincidence.
The Memphis Fire Department and the ATF wrapped up an investigation Wednesday, including that the fire at Clayborn Temple was intentionally set. MFD released photos of a possible suspect.
Clayborn Temple fire ruled arson; person sought
Troutman said she wasn't aware of any possible motive for the fire, and she had not come into contact with the person identified as a person of interest.
'The fact that anyone would want to do this for any reason is senseless and tragic,' she said.
There will be a public gathering at Clayborn Temple at 4:30 p.m. May 28, remembering what the building was and what it will be in the future.

Man accused of throwing knife at woman's head
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of throwing a knife at a woman's head was released from jail on a $15,000 bond, according to the Shelby County Criminal Justice System. Markeith Carter, 30, is charged with aggravated assault. On May 16, officers reported being called to a home in the 1700 block of South Parkway in South Memphis. A female victim told police she got into a physical altercation with a man in the 1400 block of Ragen Street. During the altercation, the woman says the man punched her in the body before throwing a knife at her, striking her in the head. Victim recalls having gun pulled on him after Corvette crash on I-40 Officers at the scene took photos of the bleeding cut to the side of the female victim's head. The woman received treatment from paramedics with the Memphis Fire Department. The suspect was identified through two previous domestic violence reports as Markeith Carter. A warrant was issued for Carter's arrest the next day. Carter was arrested and booked into jail on Monday, but was released on bond the same day. Largest ever ICE operation results in nearly 1,500 illegals arrested in blue state
Operation Patriot, the largest ever ICE operation, resulted in the arrest of nearly 1,500 illegals, including murderers, rapists, drug traffickers and child sex predators, in the deep blue sanctuary city-heavy state of Massachusetts. Operation Patriot concluded on Saturday after netting 1,461 illegal aliens throughout the Greater Boston area and the state of Massachusetts, which includes numerous sanctuary jurisdictions. Sources at ICE told Fox News that 790 of those arrested had criminal convictions or charges and 277 had final removal or deportation orders. The sources said that all the targeted criminals were roaming the streets of Massachusetts cities freely before being apprehended. The operation ran throughout May and included ICE teams from other states in the Northeast and authorities from the FBI, DEA, and ATF. Fox News was embedded with ICE Boston on Thursday as part of this operation. While Fox News was embedded with ICE, agents arrested a murderer, two child rapists, including one living next to a playground, one fentanyl trafficker, one adult rapist, and one child sexual assaulter, all within the span of a few hours. Prior to this, the largest ICE operation was Operation Tidal Wave in Florida, which netted 1,120 arrests. Fox News was told Operation Patriot was significantly more difficult because, unlike Florida, ICE received no local assistance from Massachusetts sanctuary jurisdictions. Sources said the operation was in direct response to leaders in the city of Boston and Massachusetts refusing to cooperate with ICE. The sources said "hundreds" of the arrested targets had been released by local sanctuary jurisdictions with ICE detainers ignored. ICE also said it encountered daily interference from anti-ICE activist groups throughout Massachusetts. Massachusetts Democratic Governor Maura Healey has responded to ICE's operations in her state with outrage. Healey took to social media on Sunday evening to demand answers after ICE agents arrested 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes, who was an illegal and a junior at Milford High School in Milford, Massachusetts. In her post, Healey says she is "disturbed and outraged" and that she wants answers immediately explaining why the student was taken into immigration enforcement's custody. Healey asserted that "the Trump Administration continues to create fear in our communities, and it's making us all less safe." Speaking during a press conference on Monday, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons commented on the resistance from Massachusetts leaders, saying: "If sanctuary cities would change their policies and turn these violent criminal aliens over to us into our custody instead of releasing them into the public, we would not have to go out to the communities and do this." Lyons said the operation "just showed we need to come back and we're going to keep coming back because ICE is going to make sure that we keep our community safe and keep our neighborhood safe from these sex offenders and these criminal aliens." The press conference was held the same day that an illegal alien in Massachusetts named Lorenzo Lopez Alcario was arraigned on charges of raping a child with force. A copy of the charges obtained by Fox News Digital alleges that the child was tied during the rape. Commenting on the arraignment and on Operation Patriot, Jon Fetherston, a former Massachusetts migrant shelter director, told Fox News Digital that Democratic Governor Maura Healey's resistance to federal immigration enforcement operations is "not only unsafe for ICE agents, it's unsafe for all of us." Fetherston added that Healey's policies are "creating a climate of lawlessness, where even convicted criminals are shielded from federal enforcement." "That's not compassion — it's recklessness," he said. Healey's office did not immediately respond to a request by Fox News Digital for comment.

18-year-old passenger killed after a crash on I-77 in Iredell County: NCSHP
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A crash into two parked cars on the side of I-77 in Troutman killed an 18-year-old man and left a 74-year-old man in critical condition, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, troopers responded to the crash on I-77 North near mile marker 43. Officials said a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz and a 2015 Dodge Caravan were partially stopped in the left lane due to a previous crash. A 2003 Toyota Corolla was going north on I-77, failed to reduce speed and struck the Dodge, causing it to crash into the Hyundai and both drivers who were standing by the Dodge. 'Lucky to be alive'; Driver hurt in reported road-rage shooting on I-85 in Rowan County, suspect wanted The driver of the Corolla, 22-year-old Emma Leigh Garwood, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; however, her passenger, 18-year-old Shane Charles McCurdy, died of his injuries at the scene, highway patrol said. The drivers of the Dodge and Hyundai, a 74-year-old man and a 72-year-old man, respectively, were both taken to a local hospital. The Dodge driver is in critical condition, while the Hyundai driver had non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators don't believe impairment was a factor in the collision.
