Toronto to present Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro with key to the city

CBC24-07-2025
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow will present Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro with a key to the city on Thursday to honour his long-standing creative relationship with the city.
The presentation will happen during a joint ceremony with Cinespace Studios, a group of film and television production facilities that has a location in Etobicoke, the city said in a news release Wednesday.
While the city did not name del Toro as the recipient ahead of Thursday's ceremony, Cinespace Studios confirmed he will be honoured in an email to CBC Toronto.
"In Toronto, the Key to the City is a traditional symbolic honour, as the city has no physical gates to unlock," the city said in its news release ahead of the ceremony.
"The ceremonial key and certificate represent the City's recognition of exceptional civic contributions."
The mayor selects recipients to acknowledge people who have contributed positively to Toronto and its residents, the news release said.
Del Toro — who lives part-time in Toronto — has shot several movies in the city, including The Shape of Water, for which he won Best Director and Best Picture at the 2018 Academy Awards. His upcoming Netflix film Frankenstein was also filmed in the city and will play at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
The Marine Terminal campus sound stages at Cinespace Studios will be renamed Thursday in honour of the recipient's contributions to the film industry and the city's cultural landscape, the city said.

Art focused on play: Sask. artists lead free kids camp throughout August

WATCH: Kids got their hands dirty today in downtown Saskatoon, painting a mural. It's part of a summer camp that breaks down financial barriers to creativity. Seven-year-old Francisco spent Tuesday crafting a wooden hook inspired by Maui, the shape-shifting character from Moana. 'It's a Maui hook!' Francisco said, holding up his painted creation. 'I love art because you get to use your imagination.' Francisco is one of 20 children who participated in the first day of a free art camp in downtown Saskatoon, led by artist duo Derek Sandbeck and Andie Palynchuk. 'Our practice is focused on play. So we bring a lot of that to these workshops. We want the kids to play, and explore art in a pretty unstructured way,' Sandbeck said. 'A big part of the program is that it's free.' Inspired by Winnipeg's Art City Inc., the programming is designed to give kids the chance to create without cost getting in the way. 'Because there are families that can't afford camps in the summer. So this is a free camp, your kids get lunch — everything's provided,' Sandbeck explained. The first week kicks off with a collaborative mural project. Over the course of August, kids will get hands-on with sculpting, stamping, weaving, and even raft-building. The camp is capped at 20 kids per day, with half the spots reserved for drop-ins.
