Al Jazeera clarifies Israeli strike killed 4 staff, 2 freelancers
The Qatar-based broadcaster had originally reported its correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were killed in the Israeli attack on Sunday.
But in a corrected report on its English-language website, Al Jazeera clarified that Moamen Aliwa worked as a freelance cameraman, adding that the sixth journalist slain in the attack, Mohammed al-Khalidi, was also a freelancer.
"An earlier version of this story referred to Israel killing five Al Jazeera staff. The number of Al Jazeera journalists Israel killed was four," Al Jazeera's statement read.
The attack on the journalists' tent in Gaza City in the north of the Palestinian territory provoked international outrage and condemnation from journalists' groups.
The Israeli military confirmed that it had carried out the attack on Sharif, one of the most recognisable faces on the channel, claiming that he was a "fighter" who "posed as a journalist."
Al Jazeera condemned the killings and dismissed accusations against Sharif saying the Israeli strike followed "repeated incitement and calls by multiple Israeli officials and spokespersons to target the fearless journalist Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues."
With Gaza sealed off, many media groups around the world, including AFP, depend on photo, video and text coverage of the conflict provided by local Palestinian reporters.
Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said in early July that more than 200 journalists had been killed in Gaza since the war began, including several Al Jazeera journalists.--AFP

Kenyan hosts summit to push for science-led solution to climate crisis in Africa
NAIROBI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Kenya held a forum on Wednesday in the national capital of Nairobi for senior policymakers, scholars, and green campaigners to push for science-led interventions aimed at mitigating the climate crisis in Africa. More than 500 delegates attended the forum to discuss the green transition ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change slated for Belem, Brazil, on Nov. 10-21. Ali Mohamed, climate envoy in Kenya's Office of the President, urged scholars to provide evidence and training to bridge the gap between science, policy, and community action in managing climate change on the continent. He noted that industrial and energy policy roadmaps should start embracing internal knowledge as opposed to borrowing ideas from outside the continent, adding that most of the time, foreign ideas embed assumptions misaligned with African realities and aspirations. Mohamed said Kenya, in collaboration with its partners, is rapidly emerging as a hub for innovation, with enterprises focusing on clean cooking solutions and e-mobility. "These innovators are not only accelerating access to clean cooking and clean transport, but are also strengthening local manufacturing, building homegrown industries, and creating thousands of jobs for Kenya's youth," Mohamed said. Laban Ayiro, vice chancellor of Daystar University, a Nairobi-based private university, said academia has an opportunity to make milestones in the global climate agenda by bridging the gap between research and society. He called on scholars and the private sector to forge partnerships that transcend silos and elevate indigenous knowledge, while offering solutions to climate emergencies devastating the African continent.

Japanese star convicted of indecent assault in Hong Kong
HONG KONG: A Hong Kong court on Wednesday found J-pop artist Kenshin Kamimura guilty of indecent assault after he harassed a woman working as his interpreter at a restaurant earlier this year. Kamimura, 26, is a former member of the boy band ONE N'ONLY, which expelled him shortly after the allegation. Fans queued to get into court for hours before the hearing, and some broke down in tears upon learning Kamimura had been convicted. The court heard Kamimura touched the woman's thighs multiple times despite her objections, and invited her to go to the bathroom with him. Magistrate Peter Yu found he had assaulted her, adding his behaviour "clearly shows disrespect for women." The incident took place in March during a celebratory dinner, after a fan meet for which the woman had been working as an interpreter for Kamimura and others. The Japanese star was fined HK$15,000 (US$1,900). Kamimura, who is also known as an actor in the Japanese drama "Our Youth", hugged his court translator upon hearing he would be fined without facing jail time, media reports said. Kamimura got "what he deserved", Yu said, adding that "had the victim not refused to remain silent and courageously come forward, she would have suffered an unpleasant experience in silence." But ardent fans inside and outside the court were in tears. Chen, a 30-year-old screenwriter and fan who gave only her last name, said she had come from northern China to watch the court session. She told AFP before the verdict that the trial has had a negative impact on Kamimura's image, and had incited "public outbursts of vitriol against the artist."
