Why Packers' Edgerrin Cooper can be one of NFL's top LBs: ‘He's got superstar potential'

New York Times28-02-2025

INDIANAPOLIS — The Packers carry several questions on defense into this offseason.
Will Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark bounce back from underwhelming seasons? Will the pass rush be more consistent? Is Lukas Van Ness a bust? Is Keisean Nixon good enough to handle No. 1 cornerback duties if the Packers move on from Jaire Alexander?

All carry somewhat of a negative connotation, but not all is lost on Jeff Hafley's unit as he enters his second season as defensive coordinator. Far from it, in fact, after a resoundingly successful season that saw Hafley earn a head-coaching interview with the Jets.
Along with safety Xavier McKinney, who comes off earning first-team All-Pro honors in his first season with the Packers, the player who provides the most reason for optimism on that side of the ball is one who's played less than a season's worth of games in his career.
'I think he's got superstar potential,' head coach Matt LaFleur said of linebacker Edgerrin Cooper shortly after the season ended.
'I really do, as long as he continues to work, which I know he will … I think it was a huge learning curve coming from Texas A&M to here and you saw the more he played, the better he got and the more consistent he got. It's gonna be a great offseason for him. I think he's planning on staying in town and hopefully we can get him bigger, stronger, faster.'

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst doesn't rule out trading first-round pick for an edge rusher
The Packers drafted Cooper in the second round last year after he led the Aggies in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and forced fumbles. Texas A&M had a top-10 scoring defense in 2023 and Cooper, the first linebacker off the board, was the only prospect in the draft class to lead his team in all four categories.
Cooper missed almost three weeks during training camp with a hip injury, preventing him from catching stride until regular-season games had already started. When injured, he'd stand some 30 yards behind the secondary in practice with his helmet on and go through the motions before and after the snap to stay relatively up to speed. He played less than 15 percent of the defensive snaps in the first two games of the season against the Eagles and Colts before progressing into the 30s, 60s and then the high 90s by the end of the season.

Even after missing three games in the second half of the season with a hamstring injury, Cooper showed how good he can be with what he did right after an extended layoff. In his first game back against the Seahawks in Week 15, he earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting a sack, two TFLs and an interception in a blowout win. It was his second such honor in the last four games he had played.

'I think he hit a stretch there in the middle of the season where he was just really comfortable with what we were doing defensively, with his teammates and everything around him,' general manager Brian Gutekunst said at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. 'And he's a little different than some.'
Cooper might've been a Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist if not for that midseason injury. He finished sixth for the award and only five players made the final cut. Fifty votes were cast for the award, with Cooper receiving one second-place tally, three for third place, four for fourth and eight for fifth. According to Stathead, Cooper was only the third rookie since 1999 with at least 80 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 TFLs and four pass breakups. The other two were Brian Urlacher and DeMeco Ryans. Cooper also got one vote for second-team All-Pro, meaning one of the 50 voters believed he was among the six best linebackers in the NFL.
'When he was on the field, he was dynamic and it changed our football team,' Gutekunst said. 'I think part of his maturation is making sure he's himself, ready to be out there each and every week … just continue to understand that we're basically in a 20-game-plus season and how you have to prepare, not only physically but mentally, to handle those challenges.
'I think after the guys get through their first year, there's a big exhale and then there's an understanding of what this is and what I've got to do to play at my best week in and week out and get myself the best chance to stay healthy.'

In his second season, Cooper should rarely leave the field, if at all, when healthy. That was a talking point among fans last season, that he wasn't playing enough after he began playing well. But Hafley was careful not to overload the rookie who was still learning, even when sometimes it didn't seem like he had much learning left. Hafley was asked in late December about highlighting Cooper more.

'I mean, he was the NFC Defensive Player of the Week a week ago and he led the team in tackles this last week, so I think that we are highlighting him,' Hafley said. 'I mean, we're sending him (on blitzes). He's running games. Yeah, I think we're doing a good job of highlighting him right now and I'm not sure there's much more we can do with him right now. I think as he continues to develop, we can, but I think we're doing a pretty good job of that right now.'

Cooper, who doesn't turn 24 until November, can do it all. A two-drive sequence against the Jaguars in Week 8 proved that when he burst through the line for a sack-fumble that turned into a touchdown and then retreated about 40 yards downfield to break up a pass on the next defensive drive (he earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week for that game, too).
As Cooper enters his second season in the same system and if he keeps a clean bill of health that allows him to be an every-down player, there's no reason he can't make those sequences regular occurrences and become one of the NFL's best linebackers.

Braylon Mullins helps Indiana All-Stars get best of Kentucky, AAU teammate Malachi Moreno

LEXINGTON, Ky. – It was a struggle. A good play here. A turnover there. It went like for the Indiana All-Stars for most of Friday's game against the Kentucky All-Stars at Lexington Catholic High School. The Kentucky All-Stars led by six points as the clock ticked under eight minutes. Enter Michael Cooper. The Jeffersonville senior guard drilled three consecutive 3-pointers, two on assists from Ben Davis guard Mark Zackery IV and other from Lawrence North's Azavier Robinson, to help the Indiana All-Stars breathe a little easier on their way to a 98-89 victory. 'It's just really being confident in the work I put in to just knock it down,' Cooper said. Indiana All-Stars & softball semistate? 'Just trying to be in both places and give my all' IndyStar Mr. Basketball Braylon Mullins also had a big second half, scoring 13 of his game-high 24 points to lead the Indiana All-Stars its 44th victory in the past 51 games in the series. Indiana leads the all-time series, which dates to 1940, by a count of 106-46. Cooper sparked a much-needed run for Indiana. 'He's won a state championship, so he knows how to win,' Indiana All-Stars coach Marc Urban (Chesterton) said of Cooper. 'I thought we made the extra pass on those shots where he was stepping in and shooting wide-open 3s. And he made big-time plays. That's why he's an Indiana All-Star and why he's going to have a really successful career at Wright State.' Indiana had its hands full with Kentucky's highly touted Malachi Moreno, a 7-1 incoming Kentucky freshman who played AAU basketball with Mullins on Indiana Elite. Moreno, who will not play in the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday, finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots and played all but 54 seconds. 'I'm usually seeing him in the same uniform as me,' said Mullins, who will leave for UConn on Monday. 'But there's nothing personal. We were going up the court and chatting and laughing like we were doing in AAU. I'm excited to see what he does at Kentucky, but tonight was fun going against him.' Mullins helped spark the second-half run with a transition 3-pointer, though it seemed like every time Indiana would make a move, Kentucky would have a counter. Vince Dawson, a Morehead State recruit who finished with 21 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the 3-point line, drilled a 3 put Kentucky up eight with 11 minutes left. When Jeffersonville's 6-9 Tre Singleton picked up his fourth foul with 10:26 left, it brought back memories of Mr. Basketball Flory Bidunga fouling out on a technical foul in last year's loss at Kentucky. But Indiana got hot at the right time. 'We had a brutal loss on Wednesday night (against the Junior All-Stars),' Mullins said of the 117-114 loss on his home floor at Greenfield-Central. 'But that run we had at the end of the game just sparked the bench, the players and coaches. We needed that. We made that run and we weren't looking back.' Cooper finished with 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line. Singleton, his teammate on the Jeffersonville Class 4A state champions, went for 14 points and four rebounds, but was limited to 24 minutes because of foul trouble. His bucket with 3 minutes left pushed Indiana's lead to 86-80 and Kentucky never got any closer. Ben Davis' Zackery added 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Fishers' Justin Kirby had nine points and four rebounds and the Butler-bound Robinson had eight points, five rebounds and two assists. Mullins finished 10-for-18 from the floor and had six rebounds and two assists. 'He's incredibly talented, as a high IQ and he's a great kid,' Urban said of Mullins. 'It's been fun to get to know him. I know he was frustrated missing those first couple but he just kept sticking with it and that one he hit in transition was big. He made Mr. Basketball plays. He demands so much attention and he opens things up for other people, but he's still able to be efficient.' Indiana played without Cathedral's Brady Koehler. The Notre Dame recruit was on the bench but not in uniform. It was the first win in Kentucky since 2022 for Indiana, which lost 94-90 in Owensboro two years ago and 103-82 in Lexington last year. 'There's nowhere else you'd rather do it than Gainbridge Fieldhouse,' Mullins said. 'They are going to have a little bit different team without Malachi playing but we're not going to take anything for granted. We're going to come out and play like we did tonight and I think we'll be good tomorrow.'

Opinions can vary on Garrett Wilson and what he "deserves.'' But "deserves'' isn't always how this works. The market sets itself, and the Jets know this. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We know that the New York Jets' contract extension talks with receiver Garrett Wilson are underway, with suggestions that this might be a slow roll on the way toward training camp. Advertisement And we also know that corner Sauce Gardner and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson are also due to join Wilson in wanting to get paid, meaning new general manager Darren Mougey figures to be a busy man. And what about Wilson's numbers? We have our educated guesses. And others have their uneducated ones. Example? The Jets receiver is the subject of shockingly bad contract prediction from quarterback-turned-analyst Kurt Benkert. "I think that Garrett Wilson could very easily get a four-year, $96 million contract," Benkert said. Wait. What? Let's do some math here. Wilson, whose fifth-year option will cost New York $16.8 million, is likely to view himself as a superstar - or, at least, a budding one. The going rate for such a player isn't a number that hovers above $20 mil; that's about $10 million shy. Advertisement Wilson, 24, despite shaky QB play, has become a 1,000-yard perennial. ESPN's Ben Solak has even predicted that in 2025 Wilson will lead the NFL in receiving yards. Opinions can vary on Wilson and what he "deserves.'' But "deserves'' isn't always how this works. The market sets itself. There are now nine NFL receivers who make over $29 million per year. The next wave of great receivers will be chasing a number like that. Not everybody in the media might see it. But we bet the Jets do. New York Jets Predicted to Land Defensive Superstar

New York Jets Predicted to Land Defensive Superstar originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets appear to be on the upswing after a 5-12 2024 campaign. Equipped with a new general manager, head coach and quarterback, Jets fans are hoping the tide is turning for their seemingly-cursed franchise. Advertisement The Jets haven't made a major splash with new leadership in place, their biggest move of the offseason was signing Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract, hoping Fields can tap in to the franchise quarterback-level potential that had the Chicago Bears take him with the No. 11 overall pick. However, that doesn't mean the Jets won't strike if the iron is hot on a superstar. Dallas Cowboys superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons has been unable to come to terms on an extension with the Cowboys. With Parsons set to enter the final year of his rookie deal, the Cowboys may trade Parsons if they can't put ink on a new deal for their franchise player. Pro Football and Sports Network's Hayden Victoria compiled a list of teams who could strike a trade for Parsons, and the Jets found themselves on the list. Victoria does note that a Parsons trade still seems unlikely, however. Advertisement "Parsons has made it clear he wants to remain a 'Cowboy for life,' and Dallas' leadership has repeatedly insisted they plan to keep him in the fold." Victoria noted. "Still, until a deal is signed, the possibility of a franchise-altering trade remains on the table. The Cowboys could command a king's ransom — multiple first-round picks and more — if they choose to move on from one of the NFL's elite defenders." Victoria also claims that the Jets are in "win-now" mode. While that's a contentious take, a trade for one of the NFL's best pass-rushers who is still on his rookie deal would certainly be equal parts a win-now move and a move for the future. According to Spotrac, Parsons' deal could exceed $145 million in total value, so the Jets would have to pay a hefty price not just to acquire, but also to keep Parsons. "The New York Jets are in win-now mode and have a new-look leadership group determined to contend," Victoria wrote. "Adding Parsons would give New York one of the league's most fearsome front sevens and help maximize their championship window."
