Anniston High School selected for national welding initiative
ANNISTON — Anniston High School has been named one of 72 schools across the nation selected to participate in Airgas' 2025 High School Welding Education Initiative, a program aimed at addressing the growing skills gap in the welding and skilled trades industries.
Airgas, an Air Liquide company, announced that schools from 33 states and 16 company regions will be part of the initiative, which supports underserved high school welding programs with professional development, equipment, and resources. Since its launch in 2018, the initiative has reached 162 schools and impacted more than 12,000 students and nearly 700 instructors nationwide.
'We are thrilled to expand the Airgas High School Welding Education Initiative and further our commitment to supporting welding education,' said Jay Worley, Airgas Chief Operating Officer. 'By investing in these 72 programs, we are not only addressing a critical skills gap but also empowering students to pursue rewarding careers in welding, engineering, and technical fields.'
Anniston High's selection was based on several key criteria, including the school's unmet needs, the strength and potential of its welding program and the passion of its instructors. The program provides welding instructors with hands-on training, along with welding consumables, personal protective equipment and other essential materials.
With the American Welding Society projecting a need for 320,500 new welding professionals by 2029, programs like Airgas' are seen as vital to ensuring a strong pipeline of skilled workers.
Since 2021, nearly 1,900 students from participating schools have secured jobs post-graduation. Airgas' continued investment in high school welding education is designed to help communities like Anniston build a strong foundation for future workforce development.

Industrial Gas Giant's Clean Hydrogen Projects in Jeopardy
A leading global supplier of industrial gases is emphasizing two of what were originally six federally backed hydrogen projects amid questions about the future of the funding under the Trump administration. Air Liquide, the French industrial gas provider and the parent of Airgas, was selected to be part of the development of six clean hydrogen hubs by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2023 — and was slated to receive $7 billion under a sweeping infrastructure funding law signed in 2021, Reuters reported. Air Liquide CEO François Jackow told reporters on a recent call that two of the six projects appear more likely to move forward than the other four. The two hubs in question would produce hydrogen from natural gas while capturing the resulting carbon emissions, Jackow said. Air Liquide and oil and gas giant ExxonMobil continue to work on a low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia project at the latter's Baytown, Texas, plant, although its fate also has not been decided 'absolutely.' The remaining projects, he said, were more likely to depend on the administration's policies toward renewable energy overall. Although the changes in Washington appear likely to dent Air Liquide's hydrogen operations in the U.S., Jackow was more optimistic about its other investments in the country, which include supplying gases to forthcoming semiconductor fabs and electric vehicle battery plants. He added that newly imposed tariffs were unlikely to have much of an effect on its businesses in the U.S. Click here to subscribe to our daily newsletter featuring breaking manufacturing industry news. Air Liquide to Supply Oxygen to LG Chem for their Electric Vehicle Battery Plant in the United States
PARIS, October 15, 2024--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News: Air Liquide (Paris:AI) will invest around 150 million US dollars to expand its production capacity and pipeline network in Tennessee, U.S., in the context of a new long-term contract with LG Chem. Supplying oxygen to LG Chem's future cathode active material plant, the Group will be supporting the growth of the battery ecosystem in the United States. This investment will increase the Group's footprint in a key region and support the development of its Industrial Merchant market. Triggered by LG Chem's new need for oxygen at their future cathode active material manufacturing plant for lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries, Air Liquide is investing 150 million US dollars to build, own and operate a second ASU, liquefier, storage and a pipeline at its Airgas production facility located in Clarksville, Tennessee. This investment reflects how the Air Liquide group is solidly positioned to accompany its customers in the new Energy Transition markets, including the structurally growing battery manufacturing sector. The number of electric cars globally is expected to more than triple by 20301. As part of this investment, the expansion of the Airgas facility, first inaugurated in 2013, is expected to be commissioned in 2027. It will produce additional oxygen, nitrogen and argon enabling the Group to seize growth opportunities, and ensure a better density coverage of the region with a reliable supply to industrial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, food production, water treatment and other customers throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. The Group will leverage electricity from renewable sources to produce and make low-carbon products available to customers. Matthieu Giard, Group Vice President, Americas, said: "Serving a key industry in the energy transition, this investment is in line with the Group's ADVANCE strategic plan and our commitment to supporting our customers with concrete solutions. This is further recognition of our expertise in the United States, where the energy transition is gaining momentum and where we benefit from a solid position, combining both a historic presence in major industrial basins as well as a local anchoring thanks to Airgas. As part of the long-term contract signed with LG Chem, we will be putting our solutions at the service of the battery ecosystem in the United States. Additionally, through this investment, Airgas will more than double its local liquid nitrogen, oxygen and argon production which will enable us to support the increasing demand from merchant customers in Tennessee and surrounding states."
