Council given £3.26m to improve energy efficiency
A council in Surrey has been awarded £3.26m from the government to improve the energy efficiency of its housing.
Tandridge District Council has received the money from the third wave of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund - which supports social housing providers to insulate homes, upgrade heating systems and improve overall energy performance.
Together with matched funding from the council, it is hoped the investment will support a major retrofit programme over the next three years.
Jeremy Pursehouse, chairman of the council's housing committee, said: "[The funding] means we can make council homes warmer, energy efficient and cheaper to run."
The councillor added: "It's a big step in tackling fuel poverty and supporting our tenants during a time when energy costs remain high."
It is hoped the retrofit programme will help reduce fuel poverty for tenants, lower carbon emissions and contribute to the council's goal of reaching net zero by 2050.

New council homes approved on former sea cadet site
New council homes have been approved at a former Surrey sea cadet site. A planning application to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with 16 houses, each with a back garden, was approved by Tandridge District Council. The planned development at The Grove and Hawarden Road in Caterham, which currently includes a former barracks, will have 35 car parking spaces. Plans were green-lit on Thursday, with proposals for more social housing supported, but both councillors and residents were frustrated with the design. Marilyn Payne MBE argued at the meeting that plans were "akin to inner city development rather than on the edge of the green belt". She said the homes were too cramped together in the plot, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The small, north-facing gardens would not be big enough for children to play in and would not get any sunshine, she added. Councillor Jeremy Pursehouse said there were 44 families living in B&Bs on the council's urgent need list. He said they wouldn't "care about the size of the back garden, they want to be out of there". The council bought the land from the Ministry of Defence in 2023. Planning documents said the proposed new builds would look "contemporary and minimal" to reflect the residential area and the previous army barracks. All the homes will be kept by the council and rented to families on its housing list. Firm offering a charity £10k solar power for free
An energy provider in Jersey is giving local charities and community groups the chance to switch to solar power for free. Sunworks, based in St Helier, said it had launched its Solar Giveaway to provide an installation worth £10,000 to one charity or community group. Ben Spencer-Newman, surveyor at Sunworks, said the company wanted to make a "meaningful difference" to a local group and decided to set up the giveaway to hear from people who might be interested. The St Helier-based company said the deadline for applications was 30 June and any interested parties should visit its website for more information. Mr Spencer-Newman added: "We found identifying the right project quite difficult, so we thought 'why don't we open it up to the public?'."
