Ohio State has dominated the AP College Football poll like no other program

USA Today2 days ago
The old age question of which college football program is "the best" is often a very, very subjective one. After all, how do you measure such things? You can go by conference and national championships, NFL players drafted, winning percentage, number of wins, or when the first snowfall in winter is in the Midwest.
No matter how you slice it, though, Ohio State would pass almost every test or stat you can bring up about a college football program being royalty and in the conversation for the best of all time.
But there's another way to measure success as well, and it has to do with the college football polls, most notably the Associated Press college football poll that has been around since 1936. There are other programs that have more or less been mainstays in the AP Poll, but none of them meet the high bar the Buckeyes have when it comes to several stats and categories related to arguably the most prestigious college football poll in the history of the sport. And the Buckeyes kept a lot of streaks alive by appearing very high in the 2025 AP Preseason Poll released earlier this week.
Let's dive into some numbers that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Ohio State has dominated the AP Poll more than any other college football program throughout history. Read it and weep, Michigan.
Longest Active Streaks – AP Preseason Poll Appearances
1. Ohio State – 37 years (1989-present)2. Oklahoma – 26 years (2000-present)3. Georgia – 24 years (2002-present)4. Alabama – 18 years (2008-present)5. Clemson – 14 years (2012-present)
According to a release from the OSU Athletic Department, "Ohio State has appeared in the AP preseason poll 72 of the 76 polls since it was introduced in 1950 – the most of any program in the country. The only years Ohio State was not included were 1966, 1967, 1979, and 1988."
Total Appearances in AP Preseason Poll
1. Ohio State – 722. Oklahoma – 673. USC – 634. Notre Dame – 625. Alabama – 59
From the folks at Ohio State: "The Buckeyes have now been ranked in at least one AP poll for the 58th consecutive season, which is by far the longest active streak in the country and the longest in AP poll history. No other team currently has a stretch longer than 29 consecutive years."
AP Poll Season Appearance Streak
1. Ohio State – 58 seasons (1968-present)2. Georgia – 29 seasons (1997-present)3. Oregon – 28 seasons (1998-present)4. Oklahoma – 27 seasons (1999-present)5. LSU – 26 seasons (2000-present)
Also from the OSU Athletic Department - "In more recent history, Ohio State has begun the season ranked within the top five nine of the last 11 years (the two exceptions were 2016 and 2023 when it came in at No. 6). Between the 2013-25 seasons, Ohio State has earned rankings of No. 2, 5, 1, 6, 2, 5, 5, 2, 4, 2, 6, 2 and 3, respectively. Dating back to 2012, the program has been ranked for 212 consecutive polls in which it's been eligible. That ranks as the fourth-longest streak in poll history.
"No school has appeared in more polls – or a larger percentage of them – than Ohio State."
Total Appearances in AP Polls
1. Ohio State – 1000 (79.9 percent of all polls)2. Michigan – 928 (74.2 percent)3. Oklahoma – 906 (72.4 percent)4. Alabama and Notre Dame – 891 (71.2 percent)6. USC – 819 (65.5 percent)
Say what you want about teams that have had more national titles, conference titles, or whatever stat you want to throw out there, the reality is that there simply hasn't been a more consistent and dominant team in the AP era than YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ohio State will look to continue to dominate the AP Poll when it kicks off the season against Texas at home on Saturday, Aug. 30. Let the countdown continue ...

There's a New No. 1 Team in College Football After Latest Poll Released

There's a New No. 1 Team in College Football After Latest Poll Released originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The college football season is weeks away from kicking off, and on Monday, the AP Poll officially released its preseason rankings. Although the now-defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes finished the 2024 season as the No. 1 team, they have already been bumped from the top spot. As revealed in the latest AP Poll rankings, which have been taking place since 1936, the 60 journalists who vote to decide the rankings ended up bumping the Buckeyes to the No. 3 team in the country. This paved the way for a team that Ohio State actually beat last season to supplant them from being the best team in college football. AP Poll Announces New No. 1 College Football Team Although the Buckeyes got the best of them in their College Football Playoff Semifinal matchup, the Texas Longhorns were tabbed as college football's newest No. 1 team. The Longhorns narrowly edged out Penn State in what the AP reported was the closest vote since 1998. In addition to being atop the AP Poll, the Longhorns were also tabbed as the No. 1 team in the Coaches Poll this past week. Why Texas is the No. 1 Team in College Football Despite having a program record 12 players drafted during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Longhorns have been stockpiling on talent over the past few years. Not only is former No. 1 overall recruit, Arch Manning, taking over at quarterback, but he is also joined by a roster flooded with blue-chip recruits. The Longhorns have had a top-six class in each of the past four years, with the 2025 class coming in as the No. 1 class in the country. 2025: No. 1 Class 2024: No. 6 Class 2023: No. 3 Class 2022: No. 5 Class The Longhorns are also coming off back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, making it to the semifinal round in each of the past two seasons. They also have the luxury of returning 61% of their production on defense from a season ago, indicating they have a chance to field yet another dominant unit. While it'll come down to more than just one player, many believed Manning could have led them to a title last season instead of Ewers, but now that he is at the helm, he will have the chance to do just that. Why Ohio State Isn't the No. 1 Team in College Football Similar to Texas, the Buckeyes sent a ton of players to the NFL, tying a program record with 14. However, while Ohio State ranks higher in returning production at No. 101 to Texas' 103, the biggest question surrounding the Buckeyes is their quarterback situation. With Will Howard off to the NFL, Ryan Day is choosing between redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz. Unlike Manning who started two games and also had a significant role down the stretch for Texas, neither Sayin and Kienholz played any critical snaps last season. Kienholz hasn't attempted a pass since 2023, while Sayin attempted just 12 in mop-up duty last season. Week 1 Clash Between Texas and Ohio State The No. 1 Longhorns will have to defend their ranking quickly into the season as they'll head to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes in Week 1. Both ESPN's "College GameDay," and Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff" will be in attendance for the No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup. The game itself will kick off at 12:00 p.m. ET and air on story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Ohio State freshman running back officially welcomed to the Brotherhood

Another Ohio State freshman has just been welcomed into the Brotherhood, with the season just a little over two weeks away. Four-star running back Bo Jackson has shed his black stripe. Jackson entered his freshman season at OSU with a college-ready frame, standing at 6-foot and 205 pounds. He is an electric back with speed and wiggle and was rated as the No. 11 running back in the country according to 247Sports. The Cleveland native would suffer a knee injury that would rob him of a full senior season, but his junior year numbers were impressive to say the least. Jackson lit up scoreboards with 30 total touchdowns at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, while averaging over 10 yards per carry for over 1,700 rushing yards. The Buckeyes beat out both Alabama and Georgia, among others, to land Jackson's pledge. James Peoples and West Virginia transfer C.J. Donaldson are expected to take the lion's share of carries for the Ohio State backfield, but don't count Jackson out. All it takes is one small injury, and it's "Next man up." He's had an excellent spring and summer camp and should be ready if called upon. Jackson becomes the fifth Buckeye freshman to shed his black stripe this year.
