4 Surprising Truths I Learned Testing Dozens of Mascaras

New York Times07-02-2025

The best mascaras plump your lashes and let you forget about them completely. The worst mascaras flake, itch, and annoy all day. I should know: I spent months researching mascara and talking with product development specialists and cosmetic chemists, then I spent several more wearing dozens of different formulas. I found many favorites—you can read about our picks in our guide to mascara—and I also learned four surprising truths that helped me be a more savvy shopper.
It's never been easier to find high-quality formulas at an amazing price. In fact, during testing we found many drugstore formulas that far outperformed pricier brands.
The larger beauty conglomerates that own many budget brands also produce high-end makeup that's shockingly similar for triple the price. For example, L'Oréal owns the brand Maybelline, which makes one of our picks, Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara. And it also owns Lancôme, a brand that sells mascaras for more than $30. Connie Park/NYT Wirecutter
Much of the difference is in the wands and the wiper, said product development expert Alexis Androulakis. Their design impacts how much formula winds up on the brush and the effect the bristles have on lashes.
Or it may be simply a matter of marketing. Take a look at one of the least expensive mascaras we tested, the Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara (about $5), and the Gucci L'Obscur Lengthening Mascara (about $36). Each one contains the usual mix of waxes, pigments, and preservatives. But Gucci's peachy-pink tube, Gucci logo, and tactile gold wand feel luxurious and special. That chic packaging may or may not be worth more money to you, but be clear-eyed about what you're getting. (Though, for the record, neither of these mascaras impressed us much during testing.)
Mascaras that claim to curl lashes aren't telling you the whole truth. No tube of mascara can actually alter the curl pattern of one's lash.
What mascara can do is make lashes look more lifted by combining them with a curved brush while applying a fast-drying formula to hold the shape. It doesn't curl lashes as much as arrange them upwards and outwards a bit. Cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson said, 'When the solvent in the mascara evaporates, the lashes will be fixed in that curl pattern.'
If your lashes are particularly straight or droopy, an eyelash curler—we like this one from Shiseido—will give you a much better result. It temporarily reshapes the lashes with mechanical force, said Androulakis. Set the curl with mascara, and it should last longer and deliver shapelier results than any curling formula.

This tubing mascara encases lashes with a shiny black film that elongates and doesn't smudge. It's not technically waterproof, but it's exceptionally durable and long-lasting.] $26 from Thrive Causemetics
Washable mascaras often break down throughout the day, flaking into the eye and causing irritation, especially for those with sensitive eyes. Tenacious waterproof formulas might fare a bit better, but getting them off could require irritating remover and rubbing. Tubing mascaras are known for creating dramatic, lush lashes, but they also happen to be far less irritating to eyes. Connie Park/NYT Wirecutter
Androulakis said, 'Their higher level of film formers give the strongest performance and wear.' They envelop and seal each lash in a flake-free sheath until removed, sliding off each lash in 'tubes' with just warm water and a gentle pulling motion.
While testing, we discovered that removing these formulas, such as that of our pick from Thrive Causemetics, does have a bit of a learning curve—but once our testers nailed it, they found them easier to wash off than traditional formulas. The mascara gently peels completely away from the lashes, leaving no product residue to aggravate sensitive eyes.
If you have sensitive eyes and would rather skip the tubing mascara, do avoid formulas with allergens like diazolidinyl urea and formalin (both used as preservatives), which can irritate the eyelids and cause dryness and itching.
Speaking of preservatives, they're important ingredients in mascaras to prevent bacteria and mold from invading your tube (or worse, your eyeballs). So even though the phrases 'clean' and 'paraben-free' often get tossed around in mascara ads, those preservatives are essential.
But beauty brands understand the fickle nature of shoppers, and they know how to pivot to meet the moment. 'Parabens used to be the go-to preservatives,' said Androulakis. 'However, over the years, some concerns have been raised about parabens potentially being endocrine disruptors. Although the evidence isn't definitive, many consumers prefer to avoid them just to be cautious.'
Once customers began clamoring for paraben-free makeup, brands started leaning into alternative preservatives such as phenoxyethanol (an ingredient in all our favorite mascaras), as well as other preservative-boosting ingredients like ethylhexylglycerin. But all this means that referring to mascara as 'clean' is just marketing.

Dakota Johnson Wears a Completely transparent Skirt Set for a Late-Night Appearance in NYC

Dakota Johnson turned heads in New York City yesterday, wearing a transparent two-piece look while en route to Late Night with Seth Meyers. The actress was photographed leaving the Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca in a black tulle top and matching midi skirt by Albanian designer Nensi Dojaka, layered over a brown strapless bodysuit. She styled the look with pointed black slingback pumps, gold hoop earrings, and black angular sunglasses. Her Gucci Jackie 1961 shoulder bag in brown complemented the neutral tones of the ensemble. The outfit, styled by Kate Young, was one of several transparent looks Johnson has worn this week while promoting her upcoming film Materialists, directed by Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song. On May 30, the actress was spotted wearing a transparent black bodysuit by Commando, paired with a suede Khaite jacket and gold-framed oval sunglasses. This is just the latest in Johnson's standout press tour style streak. At Cannes last month, she wore a series of outstanding looks, including a semi-sheer Saint Laurent slip dress and a bubble-gum-pink fringe Gucci gown. She also made headlines earlier this week for wearing a plunging blazer minidress during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon—which she jokingly covered up with tissues mid-interview. The Madame Web star's appearance came just one day after reports surfaced that she and longtime partner Chris Martin had ended their relationship. The breakup news followed a public shout-out from Martin, who told a Coldplay concert crowd on June 1, 'Don't forget to go see Materialists,' in a fan's clip shared on social media. The film, which stars Johnson alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, is set to be released June 13. Neither Johnson nor Martin has commented publicly on the split, though sources told People that it 'feels final this time.' Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, flaunts killer bikini body on yacht with eclectic group of famous friends

Gwyneth Paltrow has views from the top. The actress, 52, was spotted enjoying herself on a yacht in Italy on Thursday. In April, Paltrow revealed her new approach to health and nutrition. In fact, the actress admitted she grew 'sick' of the caveman diet, which eliminates modern foods. Paltrow ditched the ultra-strict Paleo diet, which had her avoiding bread, pasta and cheese for years, explaining on her 'Goop' podcast, 'I went into hardcore macrobiotic for a certain time, that was an interesting chapter where I got obsessed with eating very very healthily.' 9 Gwyneth Paltrow donned a cover up while boarding the boat. Paltrow's diet consisted of 'lots of fish, vegetables, rice, no diary, no sugar etc. I think that period of time I might have got a little didactical about it.' The Oscar winner previously detailed her daily routine, which is waking up and drinking coffee that didn't 'spike' her blood sugar first thing in the morning, followed by bone broth as her first meal at noon and an early dinner that consisted of 'lots of vegetables.' 9 Gwyneth Paltrow is joined by friends on the boat. The mother of two, who founded Goop in 2008, also reflected on why she chose such a disciplined lifestyle. 'I was just so amazed that we had this power in our hands that if we treated ourselves well and hydrated and ate whole foods that we could just feel so much better,' she confessed. 'I was sort of intoxicated by that idea and I still feel that way to this day.' 9 Gwyneth Paltrow and Edward Norton enjoy Italy. COBRA TEAM / BACKGRID After changing things up again, Paltrow started to get sick of her new regimen. 'Things have gotten a little more complicated with me and longer term with inflammation and stuff. It's the reason Brad and I became Paleo a few years ago now. Although I'm a little bit sick of it, if I'm honest.' These days, Paltrow is 'getting back into' indulging in sourdough bread and cheese. 'There I said it.. a little pasta after being strict with it for so long,' she teased. 'But again I think it's a good template, eating foods that are as whole and fresh as possible. I don't think there are any doctor or nutritionist that would refute that.'

The most daring outfits Dakota Johnson has ever worn, from see-through dresses to mismatched shoes

When it comes to fashion, Dakota Johnson has a chic and seemingly effortless style. However, the "Fifty Shades of Grey" star also regularly experiments with daring looks. She's worn sheer dresses, plunging necklines, mismatched shoes, and more. If you somehow haven't noticed, Dakota Johnson has been everywhere lately. She made multiple appearances at the Cannes Film Festival in May, has since been photographed all over New York City, and has appeared on multiple late-night talk shows this month. The 35-year-old actor has, of course, been promoting her film "Materialists," which she stars in alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. All the while, she's stood out in her signature style: chic, effortless outfits that are also quite bold. Here's a look at the most daring looks she's worn lately, and ones she's donned in the past. Dakota Johnson's bold red-carpet style can be traced back to her 2012 appearance at a GQ party. For the event, she wore a long-sleeved lace top over a black bra and tucked the former into high-waisted leather pants. By 2013, she was already elevating her daring fashion. At the LACMA Art + Film Gala that year, she wore a black Gucci dress with multiple daring elements. It had netted sleeves up top, golden feathers across her chest, and green fringe on her skirt. The actor showed the playful side of her style in 2015. While in New York City, she wore a fuzzy green vest over a tan jumpsuit. And she didn't stop there. Johnson also wore strappy heels and sunglasses that made the casual outfit look dramatic and glam. For the UK premiere of "Fifty Shades of Grey," Johnson wore a striking Saint Laurent gown. She then attended the 2015 Venice Film Festival in a backless, blush-colored gown. The Prada design hugged her body in the front and revealed her tattoos on her back. Johnson embraced sheer fashion again for the 2015 "Trumbo" premiere. She walked the red carpet that night in a black velvet gown with sheer sleeves and matching mesh panels across her waist and legs. Plunging necklines remained a staple of the actor's wardrobe in 2017. At the "Fifty Shades Darker" premiere that year, Johnson arrived in a shapeless Valentino gown with a V-neckline that plunged below her chest. A few weeks later, she went full metallic for the Oscars. Her gold Gucci gown was made from satin. It had a high pleated neckline, long sleeves, and an oversize bow at the waist. She then stood out at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in a semi-sheer Gucci gown. The skin-revealing design was made from black tulle, Swarovski crystals, and recycled brass. Johnson embraced the "no-shirt" trend at the 2017 Hollywood Film Awards. She wore a vibrant red suit jacket with no shirt underneath, matching trousers, and a diamond choker. Equally daring were her mismatched heels, which had giant crystals on one shoe but not the other. In 2018, the actor put a glamorous twist on the sheer trend at the Venice Film Festival. She later opted for a dramatic gown at the Marrakech Film Festival. Johnson swapped her usual gowns for a bold minidress in 2019. She walked the red carpet at "The Peanut Butter Falcon" screening in a Saint Laurent design. It featured a large bow as a top, a triangle cutout at the chest, and all-over crystal designs. Johnson wore one of her most daring and stunning looks at the 2021 Venice Film Festival. Her silver Gucci gown had a plunging neckline, a see-through bodice and skirt, and crystal fringe. The see-through corset she wore to "The Lost Daughter" premiere was also bold. Johnson paired it with leather pants, pointed pumps, and a diamond necklace. However, she took her daring fashion to another level the next day. While meeting fans in New York City, Johnson was photographed wearing a cream-colored dress with a high slit in its skirt that almost reached her hips. In November 2021, Johnson attended a fashion show in a fringe minidress. Her Gucci frock was held together by sparkling belts strapped across her chest, and matched her Gucci-logo tights. She wore Gucci again in December 2021. The look was even more eye-catching than her last. She wore pink satin pants — they were so wide they resembled a skirt — and a cropped, crystal-covered top that was sleeveless with a deep V-neckline. At the 2022 Met Gala, Johnson wore a see-through catsuit made from black lace. The "naked" design from Gucci was covered with long silver fringe and delicate sparkles. To kick off 2023, Johnson wore her own version of a Canadian tuxedo. The Magda Butrym look included a denim bustier, a matching trench coat, and baggy jeans. She went the opposite direction in May that year. In 2024, Johnson wore the most sheer gown of her career. At the "Madame Web" premiere, Johnson sported a custom chainmail gown from Gucci that sparkled in the light. It was sleeveless, plunged at the neckline, and see-through. Though the gown did appear to have a small lining, it matched the actor's skin tone perfectly and created the illusion that she was only wearing the crystal links. Johnson is still staying loyal to sheer clothes in 2025. In early June, she was photographed walking around New York City in a maroon bodysuit beneath a black tulle dress. The latter had long sleeves, a wrapped neckline, and a flared skirt, making for a classic silhouette. However, it was entirely see-through.
