Sadhna Bhonsle - from Maharashtra's Sangli - was preparing for pre-medical test, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET, and was taking mock tests for it. She scored low marks in her practice tests, which angered her father, Dhondiram Bhonsle, a school teacher.
In his anger, he thrashed the 17-year-old repeatedly with a stick. The Class 12 student was seriously injured due to the beating, and she died in a hospital on Friday.
The father, who has reportedly confessed to beating her daughter, has been arrested.
Sadhana Bhonsle had suffered head injuries in the assault. She was rushed to Ushakal Hospital in Sangli, but she died before she could get treatment.
"The girl's mother had filed a complaint at the police station on June 22, stating that her husband had beaten her up due to low marks, resulting in her death at the hospital. The accused father has been arrested and is in police custody till June 24. The case is under investigation," said police.

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: A 19-year-old BSc agriculture student from Rajasthan, who was studying in Latur, allegedly ended his life by hanging in his hostel room last week after struggling to cope with his NEET scores. He allegedly edited his scorecard to show 545 marks, but actually scored 170, police said. Latur superintendent of police Somay Munde told TOI, "We have registered a case and also seized his edited NEET scorecard." After student Deepak Kumar, a first-year student at the Agriculture College in Latur, was found hanging in his hostel room on June 19, the police recovered two NEET scorecards — one showing 170 marks and another 'doctored version' displaying 545 marks. Investigations revealed that the fake scorecard was shared by the student on his friends' WhatsApp group, earning him praise before the discrepancy was discovered by some of them. "He allegedly edited the original PDF using a cellphone application to display higher scores. He then allegedly shared the doctored scorecard with his friends," said a senior police officer privy to the investigation. According to the police, the student's edited scorecard raised suspicions due to a 13-digit application number discrepancy and a non-scanning QR code. The police believe the realisation of his forgery likely caused intense emotional distress, contributing to his alleged suicide. The police have ruled out the involvement of any organised racket or external agents in the manipulation. "There is no evidence suggesting that the student procured a fake scorecard from any agency or that he was part of any racket," Inspector Santosh Patil of the Shivajinagar police said. Counsellors familiar with such cases said it was not the first case of students digitally altering mark sheets to cope with the pressure of competitive exams. "Many students fake marks just to pacify parents temporarily or buy time for another attempt," a counsellor at the college said. Deepak gained admission through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) quota and was known to be preparing simultaneously for NEET alongside his regular college coursework. Police are awaiting a forensic report of the cellphone for further details.
