UP Governor visits Ramakrishna Mission on Raksha Bandhan, ties rakhi to children
During her visit, she offered prayers, laid floral tributes, and tied rakhis to children at the Sevashram.
According to a statement from the Raj Bhavan, the Sevashram's president, Swami Shri Muktinathananda, briefed the Governor about the mission's various activities, service initiatives, and contributions to society.
Praising the mission's work, the Governor said, 'Institutions like the Ramakrishna Mission are a source of inspiration for society, playing an important role in promoting service, education, and moral values." On the occasion, she tied rakhis to children present at the Sevashram and presented them with notebooks and towels as gifts. Swami Muktinathananda gifted the Governor a plant and other items, while she, in turn, presented him with books published by the Raj Bhavan and sweets as a token of goodwill. PTI KIS NB NB

Free bus travel in Andhra for girls, women, transgender persons from Aug 15
Amaravati, Aug 11 (PTI) All girls, women, and transgender persons holding Andhra Pradesh domicile are eligible for free bus travel under the 'Stree Shakti' (woman power) scheme, to be launched statewide on August 15, Principal Secretary (Transport, Roads & Buildings) Kantilal Dande said on Monday. 'Beneficiaries include all girls, women, and transgender persons with domicile status in Andhra Pradesh, subject to presenting valid identity proof," Dande said in a government order. The scheme will be implemented using the existing fleet of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), with additional buses to be procured based on demand, he added. Free travel will apply only to Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express services. It will not cover non-stop services, interstate operations, contract carriages, chartered services, or package tours. Saptagiri Express, Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Star Liner, and all air-conditioned services are also excluded, he said. For passenger safety, the government is considering equipping staff with body-worn cameras and installing CCTV cameras in all buses. Bus stations will see upgraded amenities such as fans, chairs, drinking water, and toilets. Dande said the procurement of electric buses and extending the scheme to them could also be considered, subject to Cabinet approval. Free bus travel for women was a poll promise of the TDP-led NDA government ahead of the 2024 elections. The scheme is estimated to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually—about Rs 162 crore a month—and aims to empower women by improving access to education, jobs, and mobility, Minister K Parthasarathy had earlier said. Weighing the complexities of US' relationship with China, Vance said that Washington's ties with Beijing 'affect many things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation". Vance's response came during an interview with Fox News when he was asked whether the US would target China with tariffs similar to those slapped on India for buying Russian oil. 'Well, the president said he's thinking about it, but he hasn't made any firm decisions. Obviously, the China issue is a little bit more complicated because our relationship with China," Vance said, adding, 'It affects a lot of other things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation." He stated that President Donald Trump is currently reviewing his options and will make that decision when he decides. He was responding to a question about Trump imposing significant tariffs on countries like India for buying Russian oil and whether Washington will impose similar levies on China since Beijing also buys Russian oil. The US had initially imposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India. Last week, Trump slapped another 25 per cent levy on Delhi for its purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties on India to 50 per cent. Currently, India is among the highest imposed by the US on any country in the world. The additional 25 per cent duty will come into effect from August 27. Meanwhile, India has slammed the move and termed it 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable".
