Trafficking-conversion case: Chhattisgarh court grants bail to Kerala nuns
A special court in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district on Saturday granted bail to three persons, including two nuns from Kerala, arrested on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, lawyers said.
Principal District and Sessions Judge (NIA court) Sirajuddin Qureshi had reserved the order on their bail pleas after a hearing on Friday.
The court has granted conditional bail to the trio, defence lawyer Amrito Das said.
Catholic nuns Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, both from Kerala, along with Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested at the Durg railway station on July 25, following a complaint from a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them, a railway police official had said.
Following the bail hearing on Friday, Das had said that the prosecution had not asked for the trio's custody for interrogation, and the alleged victims had been sent back to their homes.

NIA arrests two Karnal men in ‘Dunki' case of Ambala
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested two accused, both residents of Haryana's Karnal, in the case of human trafficking of illegal immigrants to the United States via the infamous Dunki route. A total of ₹ 42 lakhs was paid in installments by him and his family to the syndicate. The accused were identified as Ravi Kumar and Gopal Singh, both natives of Karnal, who were taken into custody during extensive searches carried out by the NIA at four locations in Haryana and Punjab. While two locations were searched in Karnal, NIA teams converged on one location each in Yamunanagar and Gurdaspur of Punjab during the wee hours of the day, the agency said in a statement. 'The digital devices and other material seized during the searches is being examined for further evidence about the criminal conspiracy linked to the immigration racket,' the statement read. NIA said that its investigations revealed that Ravi and Gopal, were part of a transnational syndicate that lured Indian citizens with false promises of legal travel to the US. The agency further said that Gopal had conspired with one Jai Kumar, another key accused, and Ravi in the illegal immigration of several victims. As per the NIA findings so far, he not only managed hotel bookings and the travel itineraries of the victims but also acted as an agent for other co-victims. 'He assisted other accused in collecting payments from the victims and their families,' the NIA said. The case relates to the illegal immigration to the US of Shubham Saini, a resident of Ambala's Naraingarh, who was apprehended by the authorities in the USA at the border and deported to India in January this year. In his complaint to the police, Saini had alleged that he was taken to the US through South and Central American countries, he was held in captivity abroad, and subjected to abuse and extortion at multiple stages. A total of ₹42 lakhs was paid in installments by him and his family to the syndicate.

Court lets Rana talk to kin on getting new counsel
NEW DELHI: Delhi's Patiala House court Thursday allowed 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks plotter Tahawwur Rana to have a phone conversation with his family for the limited purpose of discussing the engagement of a new legal aid counsel. At present, advocate Piyush Sachdeva from Delhi Legal Services Authority is Rana's legal counsel. The Pakistan-born Canadian moved court after Tihar Jail authorities rejected his application to talk to his family over the phone. Rana is allegedly a close aide of David Coleman Headley, alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen and the main conspirator in the attacks that killed 166. On July 15, the court allowed Rana's plea seeking directions to jail authorities to provide him with a bed and a mattress. Authorities had opposed the plea, reasoning that inmates aged 65 or older could be given a bed under the jail manual. Rana is 64. On July 9, after NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet, the court extended Rana's judicial custody until Aug 13. Rana was brought to India after the US Supreme Court dismissed his review plea against extradition on April 4. tnn

Bhopal: A week after her acquittal by a NIA court in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, former Bhopal Lok Sabha MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur got a visit from the state BJP top brass. State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, party's in-charge of Madhya Pradesh affairs Mahendra Singh and state party organisational general secretary Hitanand Sharma reached the residence of the former MP on Thursday evening to extend their support after the court's verdict. The state BJP called it a courtesy visit. However, former MP chief minister Uma Bharti met Pragya Thakur ahead of the state leaders. On Wednesday, Bharti garlanded her, touched her feet, kissed her forehead and embraced her with tears in her eyes. Uma Bharti described Pragya Thakur as a messiah. "This is an emotional moment. We had met in jail. That too was an emotional meeting. The amount of tapasya Pragya Didi underwent, even I would not be able to endure. I think she is a messiah. "She underwent inconceivable torture with steadfast courage. Those who used the phrase saffron terror should now be charge with sedition," Uma Bharti said. "Didi (Uma Bharti) always spreads love. Less than 15 hours after the meeting between Pragya Thakur and Uma Bharti, state BJP leaders rushed to her residence. Following the meeting, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal said that the allegations levelled against Pragya Thakur were sad and unfortunate. "She has fought an extraordinary battle for Sanatan. Truth can be disturbed but not defeated. The court's decision has proven that a person following Sanatan Dharma can never be involved in a terrorism," Khandelwal said. Handing her a flower bouquet, the state BJP functionaries congratulated her on the acquittal in the Malegaon blast case. However, sources in state BJP said the visit by the governing party top brass came a day too late. Sources said that the meeting could have come a day or two earlier since she has been a BJP MP and the verdict has been in her favour. Her acquittal also backs the party's core agenda that there is no Hindu or saffron terror as was claimed by the Congress. Khandelwal also said that the Congress, which created narratives like "Hindu terrorism" should always remember that a Hindu can never be a terrorist. "The court's decision has given an answer to those who insult Sanatan Dharma, sants and saffron. The seven accused persons including Pragya Thakur have endured unbearable pain, social boycott and political attacks in the last 17 years. Due to the greed for votes and politics of appeasement, Congress and its allies not only implicated innocent people, but also made an organised effort to tarnish the image of the entire Hindu society.
