Yale fires legal scholar amid review of possible ties to ‘sham charity' for designated terror group
But Helyeh Doutaghi, an outspoken critic of Israel who worked at Yale on a visa as an associate research scholar and deputy director of the school's Law and Political Economy Project, denies being uncooperative. She believes she was fired because of her criticism of the war in Gaza, as colleges around the country face financial pressure to crack down on antisemitism from the Trump administration.
The school said in a statement that Doutaghi, 30, was terminated on March 28 after refusing for several weeks to appear in person to answer questions about 'serious allegations' that included a possible connection to the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network — which the U.S. and Canada designated in October as a 'sham charity that serves as an international fundraiser for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization.'
Yale cited a posting on Samidoun's website that it says identified Doutaghi as a member of the group among the materials it was reviewing. Samidoun did not return an email message seeking comment.
Doutaghi, however, said that posting was from 2022 when Samidoun wasn't designated as a terror-supporting group, and she said Yale had not produced any evidence that she was involved in such a group.
Another webpage listed Doutaghi as a speaker in an online panel discussion in October 2024 sponsored by Samidoun and other groups. She said she did not take part in that event because it was canceled or postponed and Samidoun was not the main organizer of the discussion.
Asked by The Associated Press if she was a member of Samidoun or affiliated with it in some other way, she would only say that she is not involved in any group that violates U.S. law.
Doutaghi and her lawyer, Eric Lee, said they offered to answer Yale's questions about her affiliations in writing. Doutaghi said her concerns about being detained and deported were a factor in not wanting to appear in person.
'This has become part of the fascism that is unfolding in this country, that people who dare to speak up against genocide and the U.S. support for it and complicity in it, they have to expect to pay the price with their careers, with their livelihoods, with their jobs, students with their degrees, as we've seen at Columbia, we've seen at Cornell and elsewhere,' she said in a phone interview, referring to pro-Palestinian students at those schools who have been targeted for deportation.

Panama deserves sanctions, not the Security Council presidency
This month, Panama holds the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council — a position that confers moral authority, policy influence and global prestige as the representative 'face' of the Council. But given Panama's longstanding and conscious role in undermining sanctions on Iran, this honor is deeply wrong and misguided. In fact, Panama should not be elevated — it should be sanctioned. A country that enables Iran's sanctions evasion should not be rewarded with the symbolic leadership of the very body charged with upholding those sanctions. Despite its protestations, Panama is neither a champion of the rules-based international order nor a true ally to the U.S. Panama's acquiescence to Chinese 'Belt and Road Initiative' ambitions in controlling the Panama Canal is only the latest sign of Panamanian duplicity that place it squarely at odds with the values and objectives of the council. For years, Panama has allowed its flag — akin to a passport for ships — to be used by vessels transporting illicit Iranian oil, the key revenue stream for a regime that continues to defy international nuclear restrictions. Panama is not ignorant or unaware of this problem. In January 2024, a bipartisan group of 31 U.S. Senators led by Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.) urged the Panama Maritime Authority to 'cooperate with the United States and conduct investigations into a significant number of ships registered in Panama which are alleged to transport Iranian oil in violation of U.S. sanctions…' They sought Panama's explicit commitment to investigate some '189 Panamanian-flagged vessels of concern,' constituting ' nearly half ' of all the vessels aiding Iran. Two months later, then-Special Envoy to Iran Abram Paley visited Panama 'to ensure that the vessel registry is not abused by entities seeking to evade our sanctions on Iran. … Iran and its affiliated groups are trying to evade sanctions here in Panama, they are trying to abuse the flag registration of ships.' According to analysis by our organization, United Against Nuclear Iran, of the 542 foreign-flagged vessels that have carried in excess of $200 billion worth of Iranian oil since 2020 (mainly to China), some 289 have at one stage or another flown the 100-year old Bandera de Panama. As of this week, we identify 116 vessels currently flying the Panamanian flag that are implicated in carrying Iranian oil. This has all occurred despite repeated warnings to Panama over the last five years about this behavior by our organization, which has been praised for producing ' the best public data we have.' This is more than an oversight — it is tantamount to complicity. At the same time, the Islamic Republic of Iran is a nemesis to the UN Security Council, repeatedly violating council resolutions stretching back to 2006, when Iran was instructed to suspend all enrichment-related activities. Since then, Tehran has violated resolutions relating to nuclear activities, arms embargos, ballistic missile testing, and a resolution endorsing the failed Iran nuclear deal. Most recently, a top Iranian advisor issued what sounded a lot like a personal threaten against the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, following years of stonewalling UN nuclear inspectors. Now, two decades and one moribund nuclear deal later, Iran is still insistent on enriching nuclear fuel to the threat of world security. Iran has never been interested in nuclear compliance. Today, with key nuclear sites severely degraded by Israel and the U.N. in last month's strikes, Iran has insisted it will never give up its 'inherent right' to enrichment. Efforts to reconstitute and to develop the missiles needed to carry nuclear warheads require money, which in Iran's case will come in large part from illicit oil sales moved by tankers — tankers that Panama helps shield from scrutiny. These 'Ghost Fleet' vessels engage in deceptive maritime practices designed to obscure the origin and destination of oil — actions that violate international norms and often amount to criminal conduct. They switch off transponders, manipulate automatic identification systems, and conduct dangerous ship-to-ship transfers in international waters. These actions form the backbone of Iran's sanctions-evasion playbook. And Panama plays along. The UN Security Council is the body tasked with upholding international peace and security, including through the enforcement of sanctions. It was the council that imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. But the council's credibility suffers when one of its rotating presidents enables, with impunity, the very violations those sanctions were designed to deter. The world is entering a still-more-volatile phase in its dealings with Iran as it braces for renewed nuclear provocations. Now is the moment for the international community — embodied by the United Nations — to close ranks, not reward enablers of sanctions evasion. Thus, Panama's presidency at this critical juncture sends an unfortunate message to every regime looking to flout global norms. Panama has had ample time to reform its maritime registry. Yet Panama-flagged ghost tankers continue to offer the most critical economic lifeline for the Tehran regime. Until that changes, Panama should be sanctioned, not promoted to a leadership post at the United Nations.

Paxton's lead over Cornyn nearly cut in half: Poll
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's (R) lead over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in the state's Senate primary is narrowing, according to a new survey from Texas Southern University's Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center survey. The poll showed Paxton holding a 5-point lead among likely primary voters, 44 percent to 39 percent, in a two-way race with Cornyn. Another 17 percent said they were undecided. The last Texas Southern University poll released in May showed Paxton with a 9-point lead over Cornyn. The 5-point gap between Paxton and Cornyn remains the same in a hypothetical three-way race with Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas), who has been considering a primary run. Paxton leads with 35 percent, while Cornyn trails at 30 percent. Hunt comes in with 22 percent support, and another 13 percent said they were unsure. Wednesday's poll comes after an Emerson College survey released last week showed the incumbent senator and attorney general locked in a dead heat. That poll showed Cornyn leading Paxton 30 percent to 29 percent, with 5 percent saying they prefer another candidate and 37 percent saying they were undecided. Most polls released before last week's Emerson College poll showed Paxton with a double-digit lead over Cornyn, leading to questions about the incumbent senator's electability in a primary. Cornyn's allies have pulled out all of the stops in an effort to boost him. According to The Texas Tribune, the Senate GOP leadership-affiliated One Nation has spent more than $4 million in advertising, while Texans for a Conservative Majority, another pro-Cornyn group, has spent $3.2 million. The pro-Cornyn Conservative Majority Project has spent roughly $500,000. The latest poll from Texas Southern University's Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center was conducted from Aug. 6-12 among 1,500 likely Texas Republican primary voters and had a margin of error of 2.53 percentage points. Open letter to PM urges reversal in Canada's Palestinian statehood pledge
OTTAWA — Prominent Canadians have signed onto an initiative opposing Canada's contentious plan to recognize a Palestinian state. The letter, written by B'nai Brith Canada and signed by 60 community, business and faith leaders, urges Prime Minister Mark Carney to reverse course on the plan the signees describe as dangerous and premature. 'Though the hasty recognition of a Palestinian state may appease some on Canada's political fringes, it is beyond the pale that such a serious reversal in Canadian foreign policy has been made at a time when Parliament is not in session,' the letter reads. 'The Canadian public must have a say in matters that impact the direction of our country. It is an affront to our democracy to have such a significant decision be made unilaterally. There should have been an opportunity for such a policy to be questioned and explained in Parliament.' In July, Carney announced Canada would officially recognize a sovereign state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly next month — under certain conditions that include implementation of promised reforms by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, a demilitarization of the Palestinian state, and free elections in 2026 of which Hamas can play no part. 'Canada should know, from experience, not to treat the PA as a legitimate state actor,' the letter continues. 'It has offered similar rhetorical concession in the past — few, if any, have ever come to fruition.' Canada to recognize Palestinian state in September Anti-Jewish hatred in Canada spiked in 2024, new audit says Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy for B'nai Brith Canada, said the letter shows Canadians are concerned with Carney's Palestine initiative. 'It is our hope that the letter will prompt the prime minister to reflect on his decision in advance of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly,' he told the Sun. 'In particular, on the impact that premature recognition will have on Jewish Canadians, and on the prospect of achieving a sustainable two-state solution.' The Oct. 7, 2023 attacks triggered unprecedented levels of anti-Jewish hatred in Canada, led by anti-Israel and far-left activists who regularly take out their frustrations on domestic Israeli policy against Canadian Jews, accusing them of being party to a 'genocide' in Gaza. As well, opponents maintain the Palestinian statehood move would do little more than reward Hamas for their terrorism, including the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks — which saw Palestinian terrorists storm Israeli communities to conduct a campaign of murder, kidnappings and sexual assault against men, women and children. 'Canada's foreign policy must be guided by moral clarity and grounded in Canadian values,' the letter continued.
