MLB Insider Provides Reality Check on Kyle Tucker's Free Agency Status

Kyle Tucker and the Chicago Cubs are reportedly nowhere near any sort of contract extension as the second half of the season quickly approaches.
The Cubs, who just acquired Tucker, seem like a place he would want to stay as they have complete control over the National League Central at this point. However, MLB insider Jon Heyman breaks down the latest on his situation.

"We thought maybe there would be some discussions, maybe they tried and maybe it didn't work."
Tucker will be one of the biggest names on the market at the end of the season if Heyman's report holds true. The Cubs certainly knew they would have to pay up for him, and Heyman dove a little deeper into the complexity of locking down a player of his caliber.
"We had Jed Hoyer with Joel Sherman on the podcast for the New York Post, and he said basically it's very difficult to sign up a guy who is about to be a free agent with his stature," said Heyman. "To me, that was a pretty big hint that they're not going to be able to do it in the season, so it's going to have to be after the season."
As for where Tucker may land in free agency, it's anyone's guess at this point. Even after calling up top prospect Roman Anthony, Heyman lists the Boston Red Sox as a potential suitor or the San Francisco Giants if the Cubs can't find some common ground.
"Never count out the San Francisco Giants at this point," Heyman said on the show. "They look like an aggressive team as we've seen and the Red Sox. Now the Red Sox have a lot of outfielders, but we've heard of (Jarren) Duran potentially on the market. They would be a possibility as well because they need to do something to make up for (Rafael Devers)."
Tucker's situation will remain fluid, but he will be one of the most sought after players when the offseason begins.

But some look at the money they've saved and think they may have a plan. Mark Feinsand spoke with an anonymous executive who said the Red Sox may have their eyes on a prized free agent. 'They could look to take on an expiring contract at a high price point to get through the season and help them compete this year, while still having the financial means to attack a Kyle Tucker-type in the offseason. I think that newly found financial flexibility allows them a boatload of room to be creative.' Another executive Feinsand spoke to targeted Rhys Hoskins, who has a mutual option for 2026. They could have him play first while Tristan Casas recovers from his season-ending injury. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the team to look at when thinking about pending free agents and the MLB trade deadline. Unless they can turn it around quickly, they can rebuild on the fly with a bunch of trades. Eugenio Suarez should not be considered because he plays third base. But first baseman Josh Naylor, pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr could all end up in Boston. The Red Sox do have a logjam of outfielders and should leave their DH spot open to help themselves out. While the offseason could bring in Kyle Tucker, they need to improve their team for a run this year. 'Devers, according to a person familiar with his thinking, felt 'lied to and betrayed' by the Red Sox. Devers' contract was signed in response to Boston losing Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts in previous years. They wanted to keep their third baseman as the face of the franchise. But his poor defense made Alex Bregman an attractive option, with the DH role open for Devers. But the communication from the Red Sox to Devers was poor, resulting in bruised egos and a stunning trade. Just because they dealt Devers does not mean that Boston will sit out the MLB trade deadline. They could go out and pick up a rental to leave money open for free agency. But the Red Sox will have Devers hanging over their heads for a long time. Just like Betts and Bogaerts before him, Devers got away from Boston, and they'll have to try and replace him, which could be nearly impossible.
