Texas measles outbreak ‘on the decline', officials say
The measles outbreak that began sweeping across west Texas earlier this year is showing signs of slowing, according to the state's health services department. For the first time since the outbreak was first reported in January, no new cases were added in the department's latest update. The total case count remains at 742, a figure that has been updated biweekly by state officials. 'Thankfully, this large outbreak that we've been tracking in west Texas does seem to be on the decline,' Dr Jennifer Shuford, commissioner of the the state health services department told the Texas Standard, though she warned that 'it just takes one person to get into an under-vaccinated community to cause another outbreak'. Measles had been declared eliminated from the US in 2000, but it has been spreading in undervaccinated communities. Though most of Texas's outbreak has been concentrated in its western part, sporadic cases have appeared elsewhere in the state. Some of these cases have been linked to international travel while others remain under investigation due to unclear origins. The majority of cases have been reported in Gaines county, home to a Mennonite community with historically low childhood immunization rates. Two children from the affected region, both unvaccinated and with no known pre-existing conditions, have died due to the disease. The earlier of those deaths was the first in the US from measles since 2015. According to the latest Texas state health services department figures, fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases are currently considered infectious – which is defined as individuals within four days before or after the appearance of the measles rash. Since January, 94 people have been hospitalized. The state health agency has identified seven counties with ongoing measles transmission: Cochran, Dawson, Gaines, Lamar, Lubbock, Terry and Yoakum. The agency says it continues to work closely with local health officials to monitor and contain the spread. Shuford says that the department has struggled to adequately encourage community members to get vaccinated, explaining that the state health service department is 'really trying to strengthen our messaging at all times and so that we already have a relationship with different communities'. She added that 'vaccines are just such an instrumental way for us to maintain a healthy society that can be productive'.

Lululemon sees stock plunge 20% as brand says it will raise prices
Lululemon's shares plunged 20 percent on Friday as the athleisure brand reels from the consequences of Trump's tariffs — and said it would up prices on some of its products. The brand — which has earnt a cult following among millennial and Gen Z exercise enthusiasts — beat Wall Street's expectations for its first quarter earnings, but cut its guidance for the rest of the year. Sales were only up 1 percent year over year, compared to the 3 percent predicted by analysts. The company said the 'dynamic macroenvironment' of tariffs and concerns about an economic downturn meant it has to readjust. This will involve 'strategic price increases' to offset the negative effects of tariffs, chief financial officer Meghan Frank told analysts on the first quarter earnings call. 'It will be price increases on a small portion of our assortments, and they will be modest in nature,' she said. The company has already faced criticism for the price of some of its items , including $128 yoga pants. The price hikes will begin within a matter of weeks, Frank added. CEO Calvin McDonald said he was 'not happy' about US growth figures and acknowledged that consumers are nervously pulling back their spending. Lululemon has been hit hard by Trump's trade policies as it sources from China, currently under a 30 percent tariff, and a range of other countries currently levied at 10 percent. Last year 40 percent of the company's products were manufactured in Vietnam, 17 percent in Cambodia and 11 percent in Sri Lanka and Indonesia respectively. Lululemon rival Gap said last week that it expects tariffs to cost its business $100 million to $150 million a year. Nike said it would also be raising prices on a wide range of products. It is not just clothing brands that have reacted to tariffs by hiking prices. Walmart revealed that it would be passing on some of the cost of tariffs to its shoppers . The grocery giant — which imports 60 percent of its goods from China — said the worst increases are still yet to come. 'The industry already has an affordability problem.' Toyota expects to pay $1.3 billion in tariff costs in April and May alone — and it's already forecasting a 20 percent drop in profits for the upcoming year.

The Trump vs Musk feud will prove a historic turning point
Lovers' spat – or acrimonious divorce? With two individuals so volatile as Donald Trump and Elon Musk, it is impossible to tell where their 'relationship', such as it now is, will go. We know they were once close – a bromance, indeed, where Mr Musk declared he loved Mr Trump 'as much as any straight man can love another man '. The president was never quite so gushing about his friend in return, but only a few days ago, during a farewell in the Oval Office, during which Mr Musk was gifted an outsize golden key, he described Mr Musk as 'one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced. He stepped forward to put his very great talents into the service of our nation, and we appreciate it.' Now? Not so much. Mr Musk has called Mr Trump's signature 'Big, Beautiful Bill' an 'abomination', made lurid reference to the president appearing in as-yet unreleased Epstein files, and backed replacing him with JD Vance. The president, never the most resilient or easy-going of men, responded in kind, threatening to cancel contracts with Mr Musk's companies, scrapping the electric vehicle mandate (important for Mr Musk's Tesla operations) and accusing the former 'First Buddy' of suffering from 'Trump derangement syndrome'. There are a few signs, glimpsed, naturally, on Mr Musk's social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that these two giant egos might be persuaded to kiss and make up, metaphorically, and Mr Musk is sounding a little more emollient than on Thursday. But Mr Trump, who's been through a couple of actual divorces, may need more wooing. Even if the personal insults stop, Mr Musk is unlikely to change his mind about the Big, Beautiful Bill, and President Trump will continue to press for it and the tax cuts it contains for vital electoral reasons as much as any (spurious) economic justification. Much the same may be said for their now open differences on tariffs, where Mr Musk rightly warns they spell recession for America – if not the world – later in the year. One thing seems certain, though: it will never be glad, confident morning in America for Maga again. What it means for the Trump administration is, very simply, that it can no longer be sure of the kind of generous and unconditional financial and media support Mr Musk provided in the 2024 presidential campaign. At best, from the point of view of the White House, Mr Musk will attend to his business interests – including the urgent task of reviving Tesla, whose share price has slumped in line with Mr Musk's reputation in recent weeks. He will, on this assumption, give up on politics and maintain a stance of studied neutrality. That feels unlikely, given Mr Musk's ownership of X. At worst, then, instead of Mr Musk spending $250m helping loyal Maga candidates get elected to back Mr Trump in next year's Congressional midterm elections, he will spend serious money on swing states and districts with the aim of wrecking the president's key economic policies. No doubt X will now tone away from pro-Trump sentiment. The midterms were always going to be dicey for Mr Trump, whose hold on the Senate is weak even now. And it's perfectly possible that Mr Musk's interventions would make matters worse for the Trump partisans. After all, Mr Musk's $1m prize lottery in the key state of Pennsylvania might have delivered that state to Mr Trump, and the Musk-backed America PAC (political action committee) many more voters than that. Mr Musk certainly thinks he won the last election for his former best friend: 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate. Such ingratitude.' There are no heroes in this story. Neither the world's richest person nor the most powerful man on Earth has shown much interest in improving the state of the world. They are both impetuous and puerile. America has known some earthy types at the top of politics and business, and plenty of gamblers and chancers. But never before has the world been entertained, if that's the word, by such a breathtaking display of such man-baby behaviour. Even by their own standards, it has been a depressing spectacle. The only good that might come from it is that both men emerge weaker, and President Trump will at last find himself challenged by a more confident and assertive legislature – one that joins with the independent judiciary to restrain his dictatorial tendencies. So let us hope there will be no Trump-Musk reconciliation, the marriage is dissolved and their infantile hatred continues to run deep.
