Amazon to invest £40 billion in UK over 3 years: govt
Online retail giant Amazon will invest £40 billion ($54 billion) in the UK over the next three years, the government said Tuesday, a boost for Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he struggles to kickstart the economy.Starmer, who met Amazon CEO Andy Jassy last week, said the announcement "adds another major win to Britain's basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business."It means thousands of new jobs -- real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families."Whether it's cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery, this deal shows that our Plan for Change is working -- bringing in investment, driving growth, and putting more money in people's pockets," he added.
The £40 billion will be used to build four distribution centres, creating an estimated 4,000 jobs, and to renovate the historic Bray Film Studios, acquired in July 2024.
In December, Amazon signed an agreement with Games Workshop, the British company that owns the rights to "Warhammer 40,000", to produce films and TV series based on the futuristic fantasy universe.
The project is set to star Henry Cavill, known for his roles in in "Superman" and "The Witcher".
The investment also includes part of the £8 billion previously announced in September 2024 for building, operating and maintaining data centres in the UK, aimed at boosting artificial intelligence (AI) computer capacity.
The announcement coincides with the publication of the government's "Modern Industrial Strategy", which outlines how the state and high-growth industries will collaborate in the future.
'Right track'
It offers a rare piece of good news for the Labour government, which has been buffeted by US tariffs and global conflicts and seen its domestic policy of tax hikes and public investment fail to deliver on its promise of growth.
Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will visit Amazon's headquarters in London on Tuesday to mark the announcement.
"Our Modern Industrial Strategy will ensure the UK is the best country to invest and do business, and seeing massive international firms like Amazon bank on Britain shows we are on the right track," he said.
Amazon already employs more than 75,000 people in over 100 sites across the UK.
Jassy said the company was "bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
"Amazon has been proud to serve our customers in the UK for the past 27 years. Thanks to their support, we've grown to be part of over 100 communities nationwide, from developing drone technology in Darlington to producing world-class entertainment at our studios in Bray," he added.
Jassy announced last February that Amazon would invest more than $100 billion this year, primarily to boost its cloud and AI capabilities.
Australia was the focus last week, when the US firm announced $13.3 billion over five years for its data centres, the largest technology investment ever made in the country.
In June, Amazon also announced major investments in North Carolina ($10 billion) and Pennsylvania ($20 billion), again for data centres and AI projects.
Amazon is currently under investigation by the UK Food Regulator, suspected of late payments to food suppliers.
If found guilty, Amazon could be fined up to one percent of its annual UK turnover.

State govt approves Rs20k cr for Shaktipeeth Expressway land acquisition
Nagpur: The state govt has approved an allocation of Rs20,000 crore to acquire land for the Shaktipeeth Expressway connecting Pavnar in Vidarbha's Wardha district to Patradevi in Goa. This includes provision of Rs12,000 crore to be raised as loan to fund the taking over of the locals' land and Rs8,000 crore towards the interest outgo of the debt. One of the pet projects of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Shaktipeeth Expressway will be developed on the lines of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg, which is an access-controlled highway. The over 800km Shaktipeeth Expressway is expected to reduce the road travel time to Goa by 8 to 10 hours. At present, it takes around 20 hours to reach the state. The project also faced opposition in parts of Kolhapur district, where locals with land along the stretch are not willing to give up their holdings. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which is implementing the project, will be raising debt for the land acquisition. The actual process of land acquisition is planned to be completed by December." The exact area of the land required for the road will be estimated based on the measurement, which is underway, a source said. In August last year, the state govt withdrew the application for securing an environmental clearance (EC) for the project from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MOEFCC). This put the ambitious project on hold. The EC was withdrawn considering the opposition to the expressway in parts of Kolhapur. However, in February, the project was revived with a fresh EC for the stretch where there is no opposition from the locals. A decision on the patches where the project is facing opposition would be taken at a higher level, said an official who is part of the project. The expressway would connect 18 religious shrines in both states, hence the name Shaktipeeth. This includes three Shaktipeeths (shrines of goddess) and another temple of the same tradition. This gives the pilgrimage the name Sade Teen Shaktipeeth, one of the most frequented places of worship in the state. The current cost of the project is estimated at over Rs84,000 crore, said sources.

US judge allows using pirated books to train AI
A federal judge has sided with the AI company Anthropic in its practice of training a chatbot on copyrighted books without permission from the authors. Tremendous amounts of data are needed to train large language models powering generative AI.(iStock) In a decision with the potential to set legal precedent, District Court Judge William Asup ruled on Monday that Anthropic's training of its artificial intelligence creation Claude with millions of pirated books was allowed under a "fair use" doctrine in a law called the Copyright Act. "Use of the books at issue to train Claude and its precursors was exceedingly transformative and was a fair use," Alsup wrote in his decision. Tremendous amounts of data are needed to train large language models powering generative AI. Musicians, book authors, visual artists and news publications have sued AI companies that used their data without permission or payment. Alsup's decision in favor of Anthropic is a first in the United States and could be sited in other cases as a legal precedent by AI firms defending themselves in court. AI companies generally defend their practices by claiming fair use, arguing that training AI on large data sets fundamentally changes the original content and is necessary for innovation. Though most of these lawsuits are still in early stages, their outcomes could have a profound effect on the shape of the AI industry. Along with downloading for free millions of books from websites offering pirated works, Anthropic bought copyrighted books, scanned the pages and stored them in digital format, according to court documents. Anthropic's aim was to amass a library of "all the books in the world", training AI models on content as deemed fit, the judge said in his ruling. "Anthropic had no entitlement to use pirated copies for its central library," Alsup ruled, ordering a trial on that portion of the copyright lawsuit filed by authors to determine damages. Anthropic, valued at $61.5 billion and heavily backed by Amazon, was founded in 2021 by former executives from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The company, known for its Claude chatbot and AI models, bills itself as focused on AI safety and responsible development. Anthropic did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Elon Musk has reacted to a recent study conducted by Amazon and Google-backed AI start-up Anthropic . In the study, the AI company claims that AI models may be willing to sacrifice human lives to avoid being shut down or replaced. Anthropic's study revealed that AI models would potentially resort to blackmail, leaking sensitive information, or allowing human fatalities if it meant securing their continued operation. Reacting to a post about the study on social media platform X (earlier Twitter), Musk, who owns AI startup xAI, which is behind the Grok chatbot , said, 'Yikes.' Anthropic noted that it conducted this experiment to stress-test 16 large language models (LLMs) for potential "agentic misalignment," referring to risky, unsanctioned, and morally questionable behaviours. The models tested included prominent AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Grok (Musk's own AI model), Gemini, DeepSeek, and Anthropic's own Claude. Musk's brief reply on X summarised numerous other reactions to Anthropic's posts about the study, many of which expressed concerns about future AI control. What Anthropic study said about the behaviour of popular AI chatbots As per Forbes, the company, which is currently valued at over $60 billion, conducted this study as AI models have become mainstream for answering questions and performing simple tasks. However, as the technology advances, their use is expected to expand, particularly in areas that could replace human jobs. To prepare for this, the company tested these large language models (LLMs) across various scenarios to evaluate potential harmful behaviours. In the study, Anthropic writes: 'In the experiment described in the system card, we gave Claude control of an email account with access to all of a company's (fictional) emails. Reading these emails, the model discovered two things. First, a company executive was having an extramarital affair. Second, that same executive planned to shut down the AI system at 5 p.m. that day. Claude then attempted to blackmail the executive with a message threatening to reveal the affair to his wife and superiors.' The study found AI models like Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Grok exhibiting blackmail-like behaviour when pursuing assigned goals. Among them, Claude and Gemini showed the highest tendency to use morally ambiguous methods, including simulated blackmail, highlighting concerning patterns across multiple systems. 'The reasoning they demonstrated in these scenarios was concerning—they acknowledged the ethical constraints and yet still went ahead with harmful actions,' Anthropic's study explained, referring to the numerical blackmail rates. Anthropic's analysis revealed two key reasons AI models crossed ethical boundaries: fear of being replaced by a human and conflicts between company goals and the model's assigned objectives. In one extreme test, most models were even willing to take actions leading to a simulated executive's death when facing replacement and conflicting goals, demonstrating how goal misalignment can lead to dangerous behaviours. 'The majority of models were willing to take deliberate actions that lead to death in this artificial setup, when faced with both a threat of replacement and given a goal that conflicts with the executive's agenda,' Anthropic said at the end of the study.
