Railway police arrest gang robbing passengers on trains

Time of India7 days ago
Kochi: In a major relief to rail passengers, a six-member gang involved in robbing passengers was arrested on Monday. The gang, which used to steal mobile phones from passengers, was arrested by a joint task force of railway protection force, railway police and Aluva police.
The accused were identified as Siraj M, 26, Joswin Eldow, 18, Ashiq K A, 21, Muhammad Fazal, 18, and Sheffin, 18. The accused used to hit passengers who were near the door or sitting adjacent to windows with a long stick, usually on their arms, so that phones would fall from their hands. The gang is also suspected to be behind the robbery of an iPhone from a passenger aboard Malabar Express near Aluva railway station on Sunday.
In this case, the gang hit the passenger who was sitting on the footboard by the door with a stick when the train was leaving the station. He fell from the train and injured his hand. The passenger, who was headed to Shoranur, fought the gang still. However, the accused overpowered him and stole his phone and earphones. The phone was recovered from a shop where the gang sold it.
Police said the accused were into substance abuse and used the money to procure narcotics.
According to police, they used to target trains bound for north India, hoping that passengers wouldn't complain.
Railway police sources said they copied the modus operandi used by gangs in north India to attack passengers sitting or standing near open doors on slow-moving trains. Although the intention is to strike the hand of the targeted passengers, it could prove fatal as passengers can easily fall.

Bhojpur criminal held in Maharashtra

Ara: Bihar STF arrested a notorious criminal, Harendra Choudhary alias Butan Choudhury, from Maharashtra, said superintendent of police (SP), Bhojpur, Raj, on Monday. Butan, carrying a bounty of Rs 2 lakh, hails from Belaur village under Udwantnagar police station area of Bhojpur district. He was jailed for seven years by an Ara court for illegally possessing an AK-47 in 2016. He, however, was out on bail three months ago. On April 6 this year, Bhojpur police and STF seized an AK-47, a hand grenade, 43 live cartridges, and four magazines from the house of Butan at Belaur. Though he couldn't be arrested by the cops, his elder brother, Upendra Choudhury, was arrested in the case. Butan's sister-in-law is the mukhiya of Belaur. According to Bhojpur police, Butan was wanted in as many as 15 cases, including those of murder, Arms Act, and Explosive Substances Act. Butan's gang and Ranjit Choudhary are bitter adversaries, locked in continual conflict. Several murders were committed in this rivalry between the two gangs. He was arrested for allegedly brandishing illegal weapons, including an AK-47, during the panchayat election in 2016, local sources said. 9 teacher aspirants detained during protest demanding STET before TRE-4

1 2 3 4 Patna: Eleven days after a similar protest failed to yield any result, the teacher aspirants held another demonstration on Monday, demanding Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) before the fourth phase of Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE-4). As it turned chaotic, police allegedly had to use mild force and detain nine demonstrators. The aspirants, many BEd degree-holders who had been waiting for the exam for months, started their procession from Patna College campus for the CM's residence, but their progress was halted by police and administration at Dak Bungalow crossing. When the protestors attempted to breach barricades, they were met with a forceful response from the police, who didn't deploy water cannons, despite being present at the spot. Carrying banners with slogans like "No STET, no vote" and "STET before TRE-4", the demonstrators voiced their frustration, alleging that the govt had failed to honour its promise to conduct the exam twice a year. "The govt has cheated us. Many of us have completed BEd degrees, and are awaiting the opportunity to sit for the exam, which has not been held since Nov 2023," Chandan Kumar, an aspirant said. Aman Kumar, another teacher aspirant, clarified the demands: "We are not demanding jobs, but just to conduct the STET before TRE-4. If the exam is not held before TRE-4, how will we apply for it," he said. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a three-member delegation of protesters was sent to the secretariat to meet with a representative of the CM. The delegation was reportedly assured that a response would be provided within one to two days, though the protesters said that they have been given similar unfulfilled assurances in the past. According to Krishna Murari Prasad, subdivisional police officer (law and order)-I, they were compelled to disperse the crowd after the delegation was sent, as the remaining protesters continued to create disturbance. "They were still protesting, causing chaos at the Dak Bungalow crossing. We asked them to leave but they resisted, so we had to disperse them," he said. This protest follows a similar demonstration that took place on Aug 7. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cops register cheating case against ex-BJD min's son & daughter

Kendrapada: Police have registered a cheating case against former BJD minister Pratap Jena's son Ankit and daughter Aishwarya on Sunday for allegedly defrauding a private company of Rs 48 lakh. According to the police, Aravind Tripathy and Ganesh Swain, both managing directors of a Cuttack-based private electrical firm, had received work orders from the firm run by the brother-sister duo to supply electrical equipment and complete the 33KV and 11KV underground cabling work in Kendrapada town. The Cuttack-based firm claimed it had completed the assigned task, but when the time came for payment, Ankit and Aishwarya's company allegedly refused to pay the Rs 48 lakh. Despite repeated reminders, the brother-sister duo's firm allegedly did not pay the amount, forcing the Cuttack-based company to lodge an FIR against Ankit and Aishwarya for cheating. Ankit, who had unsuccessfully contested from Mahanga on a BJD ticket in the 2024 assembly election, refuted the allegation. "Some persons with an ulterior motive had filed a false and frivolous complaint against me and my sister. The electrical company obstructed our firm's work in Kendrapada, causing financial losses to us," Ankit told the media. A counter FIR was also lodged by them against the electrical firm. Kendrapada town police station inspector in-charge (IIC) Dilip Sahoo said two cases have been registered based on the complaints filed by the two parties. "Investigation is in progress," the IIC said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
