There are four new models in the range once again, including the main Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro, the Pixel 10 Pro XL and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
The look of the smartphones stay true to the previous Pixel design, with some new colours and the return of the original Indigo.
AI is front and centre of Google's focus, with features that can magically gather information for you whenever it's mentioned in a phone call or text message, so you don't have to go searching around for it.
Known as Magic Cue, it digs through apps like Gmail, Calendar and Screenshots to find relevant information instantly without you needing to lift a finger.
For example, should a friend text you asking about when your flight is landing the details will automatically appear to send if you choose to.
Or if another pal asks for photos of your holiday, suggestions will show up.
The details are privately and securely handled on-device by the Google's powerful Tensor G5 chip with your permission, meaning no sensitive information is sent off online.
Magic Cue's capabilities are also utilised in the new Daily Hub, which shows a personalised digest of your day in the discover feed.
Elsewhere, AI is being used to take live translation of phone calls a step further.
The Pixel 10 will not only translate what you and the other person says instantly but it will playback in what sounds like each speaker's voice.
Google's Gemini AI app lets you chat out loud with shockingly humanlike virtual helper
It works when translating to or from English with Spanish, German, Japanese, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian and Indonesian.
Google has focused on some camera improvements too, providing an eye-watering 100x digital zoom on the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL to go mega close.
AI jumps in once again on all models with a new Camera Coach that suggest ways to improve your photos as you're taking them, such as choosing different framing and composition for a shot.
And Best Take, the group photo tool that combines the perfect facial expressions from a series of shots, is now going automatic, so it will activate when it senses you are taking a group photo.
In another surprising announcement, prices for the Pixel 10 handsets have not increased this year, staying the same as last year's Pixel 9 launch.
These start from £799 / $799 - and can be reduced further if you trade in your old smartphone.
There's also a freebie worth £190 included with all the Pro models.
You get access to Gemini Pro for a whole year, which is Google's more powerful and fast AI system, capable of extra skills such as Veo 3 Fast for text-to-video generation.
Google is also offering seven years of Android and security upgrades once again.
The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL go on sale on August 28, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will follow on October 9.

LLM chess
The life cycle of Drosophila melanogaster lasts a couple of weeks, so the humble fruit fly is far more useful than a giant tortoise to a geneticist with a hypothesis and a deadline. Similarly, for AI researchers, chess has long been a useful testbed because it has clear rules but unfathomable depth. And yet there is an incongruity. Compared with the breakneck development of computing, the game of chess remains reassuringly dependable, while the thing we see evolving in real time is AI itself. Not long after ChatGPT was first released, late in 2022, some people had fun making it play chess. Stockfish is the leanest, meanest chess engine there is, the apotheosis of decades of incremental improvement in one narrow niche. ChatGPT may be an apex predator in its own ecosystem, but pitting it against Stockfish is like watching a floundering lion fight a shark. The cascade of elementary blunders and illegal moves from ChatGPT showed its limitations. In AI terms, 2022 was aeons ago. Artificial intelligence continues to improve in leaps and bounds, notwithstanding the uneven reception of the new GPT-5 earlier this month. ChatGPT faces fierce competition from other large language models (LLMs), including Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi. Some excel at coding, while others will ace your homework essay. Researchers who wish to compare the strengths of these models have devised various benchmarks, rather like giving an SAT test to a chatbot. But why not use chess skill as a new form of standardised test? Kaggle is an established online platform for data science competitions, owned by Google. The Kaggle Game Arena, where LLMs can compete using various games as a benchmark, is an innovation. To mark its launch, they organised a three-day exhibition chess tournament between the top LLMs. Let's be clear – LLMs are out of their depth and, for the time being, the quality of play remains woeful. But at least a majority of the games ended in checkmate rather than in disqualification due to illegal moves. Millions of chess games are available online, so presumably these models have ingested lots of notation as part of their training. Almost all the games began with the Sicilian defence (1 e4 c5), presumably because humans write about it. LLMs are sometimes described as 'auto-complete on steroids'. Their output has a veneer of coherence, but after some probing it becomes clear that their 'mental model' of the world is deficient, as when people discovered that some gave incorrect answers when asked how many r's are in the word 'strawberry'. (Though current models cope fine when I tested this.) So in LLM chess, the opening often makes sense, presumably because it is regurgitated, but serious errors show up later on. Nevertheless these games look like a huge step forward compared with a couple of years ago. The following game was played in the final, in which OpenAI's o3 model defeated Grok 4, developed by Musk's xAI. Google spotlights AI over hardware upgrades in unveiling new smartphones
Aug 20 (Reuters) - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google introduced on Wednesday a new lineup of Pixel smartphones and gadgets, intensifying its efforts to embed artificial intelligence across a wide ecosystem of products. The products were launched at the annual "Made by Google" event held in New York that diverged from its typical format to emphasize mainstream consumer appeal over technical details. Talk show host Jimmy Fallon, the Jonas Brothers and other celebrities featured heavily across the presentation, as they helped demonstrate real-world applications of Google's AI integrations into the hardware. As for the hardware itself, the upgrades were comparatively modest. "There has been a lot of hype about (AI in phones) and frankly a lot of broken promises too, but Gemini is the real deal," said Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of devices and services, referring to Google's AI chatbot and model. At its developer conference in June, iPhone maker Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab toned down its AI promises a year after it failed to deliver AI upgrades to key products such as Siri. Apple is expected to unveil its new line of iPhones this autumn. While Google's hardware upgrades were modest compared with its bold refresh in 2024, the company maintained its forward progress on its stated ambition to develop a universal AI assistant. "We've got the best models, we've got the best AI assistant, and it means this can just unlock so much helpfulness on your phone," Osterloh said. New AI features rolling out with the Pixel 10 lineup include a "coach" in the camera app to help users take better pictures and an assistant that displays relevant information without a user's explicit request, such as showing a flight confirmation email when they call an airline. Employees also demoed integrations of AI features earlier unveiled at Google's developer conference in May, such as a real-time language translation function for phone calls. The exteriors of the phones remain largely the same, though Google added a telephoto lens on the base model to bring it in line with the cameras on its pricier units. Prices, starting at $799 for the base unit and $1,799 for the foldable model, remained flat despite concerns earlier this year that some smartphones could experience drastic price hikes due to U.S. tariffs. "A lot of the stuff they showed today would probably run almost exactly the same way on last year's hardware. Their point is it's not about just the hardware anymore," said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research. Google's annual hardware event has traditionally served as a way for the company to show off to device makers and software developers the potential of Android, a key strategic component to battling competition from Apple, which has its own operating system for its iPhones. Though Google develops the Android operating system underlying more than 80% of smartphones worldwide, its Pixel line generates only a fraction of the sales of other firms selling Android-powered phones, such as Samsung ( opens new tab and Xiaomi ( opens new tab. Analysts told Reuters this year's event appeared to be an attempt by Google to broaden the appeal of Pixel beyond its traditional base. "Last year there was such a jump in the hardware, from a design and feature perspective," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies. "This feels more like a big push from a marketing perspective." Google's AI push has not yet translated to a material improvement in market share: for the second quarter, Google held 1.1% of the worldwide smartphone market, up from 0.9% one year ago, according to IDC. In the United States, Pixel's biggest market in terms of shipments, the share slid to 4.3% from 4.5% in that same time period, according to IDC. Google has so far limited its focus to the high-end market. Nearly three-quarters of Pixel shipments occurred in the United States, Japan and UK, according to research firm IDC. On Wednesday, the company announced it would begin selling the Pixel devices in Mexico for the first time. Google's limited geographical presence with Pixel has inhibited its ability to amass market share, analysts told Reuters. "I hope this is the start of expanding their channel presence," Milanesi said. "The opportunity of the addressable market they can reach is still what is kind of holding Google back." The Pixel 10, as well as the souped-up Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, will be available later this month, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slated to ship in October. All the Pixel phones are equipped with Google's latest mobile processor, Tensor G5, and for the first time, feature a magnetic charging technology called Pixelsnap that is reminiscent of the MagSafe functionality on Apple's iPhones. Google unveiled a series of Pixelsnap chargers, cases and phone stands to accompany the launch. Google also announced new versions of its smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 4, and its cheaper Pixel Buds 2a wireless earbuds, though it did not update the Pixel Buds Pro 2 besides announcing a new color and upcoming device-specific software upgrades.

The cheapest deals on the Google Pixel 10 explained The cheapest deal for the Google Pixel 10 that we could find is for the 128GB entry-level handset in Indigo, Obsidian, Lemongrass or Frost. The contract is for 36 months but if you want to cut that to just 24 months, you can pay £21 per month. The cheapest 12-month contract is from Sky, where it charges £39 per month compared to Three's £42 offering. However, Sky does come with a £99 up-front fee compared to Three's £20 up-front cost.
