Mets left in disbelief after botched triple play call ends fourth inning
Jesse Winker pulled the ball to the first-base side in the top of the fourth inning, and at first glance, Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe seemed to have made the catch before throwing the ball to second base for a second out and back to first to complete the triple play.
There was one big problem with the call: the ball had hit the ground.
Replay showed that Lowe did not catch the ball before the ball hit the ground and it should have not been called an out by first base ump Alfonso Marquez.
The play was not reviewable, so the Mets could not challenge the call, but Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza came out to argue the ruling with the umpire.

The triple play ended the top of the fourth with the Mets trailing 2-0 to the Nationals.

The Amazin's luck didn't get much better from there: Mark Vientos' three-run bloop triple wasn't able to stand up as Ryne Stanek, closing in place of Edwin Diaz, gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to snap the team's winning streak at seven.

Mets' Mark Vientos flaunts power for second straight game: 'I'm just focused on winning'
Mark Vientos hasn't lived up to his potential as a key lineup fixture this season, but his daily approach to game preparation is helping him produce on the field when the Mets' roulette wheel of platoon players lands on his number. Just hours after manager Carlos Mendoza expressed a need for contributions from Vientos as the NL playoff race intensifies, the slugging infielder answered the call, delivering a welcome two-run home run in the Mets' 8-1 beatdown of the Nationals on Tuesday night at Nationals Park. He finished the night 1-for-4 with a walk. Vientos, who produced a four-RBI effort in Sunday's win over the Mariners, demolished a hanging two-strike curveball from Nationals starter Jake Irvin in what became a five-run third inning. The ball traveled 419 feet into the left field seats with a 35-degree launch angle, and it was his second straight game with a homer. "I was just trying to capitalize on the situation," Vientos said after the win. "We were hitting well on [Irvin] that inning and I was staying ready for a pitch in the zone. Luckily, I was ready and put a good swing on it... [I stay ready] with practice, honestly. Showing up every day like I'm starting and going about my business like I'm playing that day. Working hard, talking to my coaches, staying ready..." While his role remains fluid -- he batted sixth as the designated hitter on Tuesday and played third base as the eighth hitter on Sunday -- Vientos' mentality as a regular starter is paying off. He's constantly in communication with Mendoza, who fully endorses the be-ready attitude that can only do good. "I know it's there. We saw it last year," Mendoza said of Vientos' mettle. "He's a really good player, and it's been hard for him. I said it before the game, we're going to need him. He stepped up again today. He'll continue to get opportunities... For him to continue to put together some really good at-bats, I thought he hit the ball hard a few times today." Call it a regular season to forget for Vientos, who's slashed an underwhelming .232/.278/.381 with only 23 extra-base hits across 85 games. But the ending to his 2025 story isn't required to match the beginning, and the team-first mindset that he's embraced only makes the latest personal success sweeter. "I'm just focusing on winning," Vientos said. "I just want to win and whenever I get my opportunity, to help in whatever way. As long as we're winning, I'm happy."

David Peterson dominates the Nationals and Mark Vientos homers again as the Mets win 8-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — David Peterson dominated the Nationals again, Mark Vientos homered for the second consecutive game and the New York Mets pounded Washington 8-1 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory. Peterson (8-5), who blanked the Nats on June 11 in New York for his first career shutout, extended his scoreless streak against Washington to 25 innings dating to last season. He finally allowed a run when Dylan Crews led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a double-play grounder. The only Mets starter who has reliably pitched deep into games, Peterson finished the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Juan Soto hit his 31st homer, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Baty also went deep for the Mets, who may be breaking out of a funk that began in late July. New York had lost 14 of 16 before this run of three wins in three states that began Saturday at Citi Field and continued Sunday night at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Vientos hit a three-run homer. 'We need him now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before the game of Vientos, who hit 27 homers in 111 games last year but has seen sporadic playing time lately. Tuesday's two-run shot off Jake Irvin (8-8) was his ninth longball of the season. McNeil hit a two-run double during the Mets' five-run third against Irvin and went deep in the ninth off Jackson Rutledge. Peterson faced the minimum through five innings and had his first stress in the sixth, allowing a leadoff double to Andrés Chaparro and a one-out single to Jacob Young. The All-Star lefty then struck out James Wood and retired CJ Abrams on a fly to center. Key stat Peterson worked six or more innings for the 16th time. Clay Holmes (seven) has the next-most such outings on the Mets. Up next Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.35 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Nationals' Brad Lord (3-6, 3.26) on Wednesday night. ___
