
HistoriCity: Mythical flying machines and the false science of ‘Vaimanika Shashtra'
The word Vimana today means aircraft but its earlier meanings have been wider and more heavenly. The Adi Parva of the other great epic Mahabharat refers to the Vimana as a divine chariot enjoyed by deities; in the Jain tradition a Vimana is described as a palace which is the abode of the deities serving Mahavira. In temple architecture, particularly, in south India, Vimana means the pyramidal structure built over the garbh-griha or the sacred sanctorum of a temple.
These ancient references are also corroborated by at least one known inscription. In the Girnar rock edict left by emperor Ashoka, it is written that 'In times past, for many hundreds of years, there had ever been promoted the killing of animals and the hurting of living beings, discourtesy to relatives, (and) discourtesy to Sramanas and Brahmanas. But now, in consequence of the practice of morality on the part of King Beloved of the Gods, Priyadarsin, the sound of drums has become the sound of morality, showing the people representations of aerial chariots, elephants, masses of fire, and other divine figures'.
In the more than two thousand years since Ashoka's edicts were decreed, innumerable Sanskrit texts have been produced. The Gupta period (4th -6th BCE) itself saw the production of a large number of treatises and other works but none mentioned much about flying machines. As per available records
it was about half a millennium later that the Samarangana Sutradhara, a 11th century work on temple architecture and attributed to king Bhoja of Dhar, spoke of a flying chariot or vehicle, the Vimana.
Dr Mattia Salvini, Sanskrit and Buddhist scholar writes in The Samaranga Sutradhara: Themes and Context for the Science of Vastu: 'The author says something that should not pass unobserved, the instructions to make flying machines are purposely incomplete.' Salvini attributes the exclusion to 'ethical considerations'; he cites the following shloka to support his view: yantranam ghatana nokta guptyartham najnatavasat taira hetu (In this respect, that should be known as the reason, i.e that the details are not fruitful when disclosed).
Vaimanika Shastra
In 2015, a paper presented at a Science Congress in Mumbai claimed on the basis of the Vaimanika Shastra that aviation technology not only existed during the Vedic period but that it was also more advanced than today. The paper was dismissed as fanciful and false science, which threatened to bring disrepute to the genuine achievements of India such as those in mathematics and astronomy.
The paper, titled 'Ancient Indian Aviation Technology' by former pilot Anand Bodas and Ameya Jadhav drew flak from the scientific community and has been forgotten as an embarrassing episode. The paper also brought back into scrutiny the Vaimanika Shastra itself. The shastra published in 1950s is based on a 'divine revelation' received in 1904 by an illiterate ascetic from the mythical sage Bharadwaja. The Vaimanika Shastra makes such impossible assertions, including flying speeds of 8,000 mph, that it was discarded as a flight of fancy. It says for instance, some of the construction materials include the urine of a donkey, cow and an elephant! One of the five aircraft described in the text is shaped like a multi-tier wedding cake, and had precise dietary instructions for pilots.
Author Angela Saini writes in Geek Nation: How Indian Science is Taking Over the World, 'There were recipes too, for what these pilots should eat ('56 [roots] should be purified, powdered, and duly cooked, and made into balls, and given out for use as food'). And there was a detailed description of how to generate electricity to power the dynamos that would drive the aircraft ('get a . . .flame-faced lion's skin, duly cleaned, add salt, and placing in the vessel containing spike-grass acid, boil for . . .15 hours. Then wash it with cold water').'
In a 1974 essay (A Critical Study of the Work: Vymanika Shastra), S M Deshpande, H S Mukunda and others analysed the historicity of the so-called Shastra and the claims it made. They wrote, 'What we feel unfortunate in history is that some people tend to eulogise and glorify whatever they can find about our past, even without valid evidence... the work 'Vymanika Shastra' was brought into existence sometime between 1900 and 1922…the only evidence in favour of Maharshi Bhardwaja being the author is the textual statement and nothing more'.
After examining the technical aspects of the five planes, training of pilots, fuel composition and other claims in the Vaimanika Shastra, the scientist wrote a scathing conclusion. They said, 'the planes described are at best poor concoctions, rather than expressions of something real. None of the planes has properties or capabilities of being flown; the geometries are unimaginably horrendous from the point of view of flying; and the principles of propulsion make them resist rather than assist flying. The drawings definitely point to a knowledge of modern machinery. This can be explained on the basis of the fact that Shri Ellappa who made the drawings was in a local engineering college and was thus familiar with names and details of some machinery... Also, no data have been given about the weights of crafts and their components. This is serious since weight is fundamental to the flying of heavier than air machines. Moreover, the unit of mass does not even appear anywhere in the text.'

In the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva are five brothers collectively referred to as Pandavas, the sons of the king Pandu. In India, when no one really knows who built a temple, when it is not the charity or the order of some kingdom or a king, when it is the collective effort of people, it is common to attribute it to the Pandavas. Woh Nakula hai ya Bhima hai, maloom nahi, lekin jaise har ek ungli muthi ki takat banti hai, waise har ghar, har parivar ke contribution se yeh bane hai (no one knows if it is Nakula or Bhima. But just as every finger contributes to the strength of a fist, every household, every family has made these possible.) Indian food is pretty much the same. The recipes do not belong to one chef, one kitchen, or even one ingredient, but they are built by constant innovations, small and big contributions, by mothers and grandmothers who ruled over and toiled in the kitchen, who kept not just the fires and food warm but even our hearts. Therefore, use this book wisely, and remember that the recipes do not make a dish, you make it. More importantly, your fearlessness to give a part of you to it makes the dish. Rice pej It is a drink, it is a meal, it is just rice pej. If I was smart, I would say it is the prebiotic infusion you need. Seasonal drink | Serves 2 | Prep 10 minutes | Cook 20 minutes Ingredients 40g (11⁄2oz) rice (hand-pounded or single-polished or any variety available at home) A pinch of hing (asafoetida) Kala namak (black salt) to taste 2 tsp ghee Method Soak the rice in water for a few minutes. Drain and discard the water. In a pressure cooker, bring 900ml (1½ pints) of water to the boil. Add the soaked rice along with hing and kala namak. Close the lid and bring to full pressure over medium heat for 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender. Adjust the cooking time based on the type of rice you are using. One of my colleagues uses ukde tandul (Goan rice) and adds kali mirch (black pepper powder) in the pressure cooker for an extra kick, but I enjoy my pej plain, as given in this recipe. Remove from heat and let the pressure release naturally, then open the cooker and add ghee, stirring gently to combine. Pour it into a glass or bowl and slurp. Aam ras and puri The perfect meal to celebrate mango, the king of fruits. Seasonal special | Serves 3 | Prep 1 hour | Cook 20 minutes, plus 1 hour of resting | Special equipment chakla–belan (rolling pin and board) and kadhai. For aam ras 2 ripe mangoes, soaked in water for 20–30 minutes For puri 120g (41⁄4oz) wheat flour 1 tsp semolina ½ tsp sugar 1 tsp salt 500ml (17fl oz) oil, of which 2 tsp is for the dough Method For the aam ras, trim off the top part of the soaked mangoes where the stem is attached. Then, gently press the mangoes from all sides to soften them evenly. Once they are tender, extract the pulp by gently squeezing from the bottom upwards, allowing the juicy flesh to release. Set this aside while you make the puris. For the puris, in a bowl, combine wheat flour, semolina, sugar, salt, and 2 teaspoons of oil. Mix well. Gradually add water, kneading into a firm, elastic dough. Cover with a cotton cloth and let it rest for 1 hour. Once rested, pinch off small portions of dough and shape into smooth balls. Using a chakla–belan, roll each ball into a thin circle. Heat the remaining oil in a kadhai on medium heat for a few minutes. If it is not hot enough, the puris will absorb excess oil and turn soggy. To test the oil, drop a tiny piece of the dough in – it should sizzle and rise to the surface immediately. Carefully fry the puris in batches of 2–3, until they puff up and turn golden-brown on both sides. Drain and place on a plate. Enjoy hot, crispy puris with a generous portion of aam ras.

The Chera dynasty under Bhaskara Ravi Varma I published copper plates in the fourth century CE which made these documents an important historical artifact. Joseph Rabban received similar rights to feudal lordship through the copper plates issued by the rulers of Chera dynasty which gave him ownership of land and exemption from taxation. The noble deed created an enduring symbol of Kerala's enriching religious relationships which shaped an environment with peaceful interfaith coexistence. The Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry stands today alongside other remnants of this history because it functions among the oldest synagogues in the Commonwealth. The departures of most Jewish people to Israel after independence have left behind enduring marks of their cultural influence on Kochi's multicultural heritage. Thomas and the Christian Connection Kochi's identity developed through a major mythological story that derives from Christian historical accounts. The Christian legend asserts that Apostle Thomas brought the Christian gospel to Kerala during his arrival in 52 AD upon being sent by Jesus Christ. The believed landing location of St. Thomas occurred at Maliankara near Cranganore which became modern-day Kodungallur where he founded seven church establishments along the Malabar Coast. The Palayur town features the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Church as a physical manifestation of his missionary activities. The actual historical accuracy of St. Thomas' story continues to spark scholarly debates yet his tale shaped the religious nature of Kochi in a fundamental way. The teachings of Saint Thomas serve as the historical basis for the Syrian Christian population of Kerala with their distinct customs which unite Indian and Christian traditions throughout the region. People from all walks of life continue to travel to St. Thomas-associated sites which demonstrate his permanent influence on Kochi's spiritual values. Enigmatic Chinese Fishing Nets The discussion on Kochi requires the inclusion of its celebrated Chinese fishing nets commonly known as cheena vala . Research has not confirmed this phenomenon to be a true legend but people continue to speculate about the heritage behind Kochi's exceptional giant fishing nets. Archival research shows that Chinese explorer Zheng He brought the fishing nets to India during his nautical expeditions around the year 1400. Some investigators argue that the Chinese fishing nets appeared before 1430 when Zheng He sailed to Kochi through earlier Chinese mariners who used the city as a trading port. The fishing nets represent Kochi's willingness to welcome foreign traditions which effortlessly blend with traditional ways of life. The net structures that face sunset create a timeless connection which maintains the link between Kochi's ancient past and its present day era. The nets remind citizens that Kochi has historically functioned as a transportation and cultural meeting point for global commerce. Curse of Vasco da Gama Vasco da Gama established his position as an important figure in Kochi colonial development after discovering a sea path to India. His appearance in 1498 launched the period where Europeans would control the area. The local traditions about him tend to present him in negative ways. Numerous legends describe how his forceful methods pushed away local people which produced both hate and magical curses. The historical records show that Vasco da Gama passed away in Kochi during 1524. According to historical accounts Vasco da Gama passed away while being the Viceroy of Portuguese India under unidentified circumstances. The local population spread rumors that divine forces punished him because he exploited natural resources while overturning the regular way of life. These historical stories communicate the conflicting relationship between European colonial powers and native indigenous populations of Kerala and enrich the understanding of Kochi's historical development. Kali and the Spirit of Resistance The religious mythos of Kochi deeply embraces Hindu spiritual beliefs which orbit Goddess Kali. Local residents view the Ernakulathappan Temple together with the Thrikkakara Temple as vital religious sites. Popular tales describe Goddess Kali as personifying protective strength alongside justice which Kochi citizens share as their fundamental face of defiance. The religious holiday Onam provides people with an opportunity to recognize Kali's miraculous defense of Kerala against menacing adversaries. The city celebrates traditions at events which strengthen social ties and demonstrate its dedication to traditional cultural practices despite facing external threats. Kochi fights against being reduced to one identity by adoring Kali as a symbol that celebrates its many different social groups. Final Thoughts Local myths and legends fulfill a central role in defining Kochi as a community because they show how the city developed throughout history. Multiple tales originating from the Jewish copper plates to the Chinese fishing nets enrich the complex nature of the city as an entire entity. Kochi stands out through its effective combination of multicultural acceptance together with unique characteristics. People who walk along its historical streets combined with views of its serene backwaters ultimately contribute to existing stories that have accumulated throughout centuries.
