Medals for Milan-Cortina Olympics represent 'two halves coming together'
Organizers for the next Olympics and Paralympics unveiled the medals for the Games at a ceremony alongside the Grand Canal in Venice on Tuesday.
They are described as "a graphic abstraction capturing the union of two halves in perpetual motion" and "two unique halves coming together to create a bold, unified statement."
They feature the Olympic rings on one side and the Games' logos on the other with specific events engraved on each medal.
The Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 6-22, followed by the Paralympics March 6-15. A total of 1,146 medals will be awarded across 195 events between the two.
The Games will be spread across a wide swath of northern Italy, with ice sports in Milan and snow sports in several different mountain clusters.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region that includes Cortina d'Ampezzo, which will host women's Alpine skiing, sliding and curling.
The medals are being produced by Italy's state mint, the Zecca dello Stato.
"I can assure you they won't deteriorate," Milan-Cortina organizing committee president Giovanni Malag said. "They could even be recycled, although I hope nobody will do that."

Marta hopes to lead Brazil to a Copa América Femenina title after coming out of retirement
It was just a year ago when Marta left the Olympic final with tears in her eyes, emotionally marking the end of a storied career with the Brazilian national soccer team. Turns out, the six-time world player of the year wasn't quite finished. The 39-year-old forward has un-retired and is playing for Brazil at the Copa América Femenina in Ecuador. The Brazilians have won eight titles in the premier women's tournament for South America. The Copa América is among three big continental women's tournaments this summer, along with the European Championship and the Africa Cup of Nations. Even though Marta had stepped away from the national team, Brazil coach Arthur Elias pulled her back in late May for a pair of friendly matches against Japan. Marta started in another Copa América tune-up match against France in late June. Marta said she's just living in the moment. 'My work doesn't change, the feeling doesn't change, the pride doesn't change, the desire to help the team doesn't change and it never will, regardless of whether I'm playing or not. But the way I'm facing things, not only here in the team, but I think in my day-to-day life, is a different way,' she said in a news conference when she was brought back. 'I'm aware that I don't have many years left to play, so the little I have, I want to make the most of it.' Before last year's Paris Games, Marta said she would be retiring from the national team after the Olympics to make way for the next generation of players. The Brazilians went on to win the silver medal after a 1-0 loss to the United States in the final. But she continued to play for her club team, the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League. Last season, she scored 11 goals with the Pride, who won the NWSL title. She re-signed with the team through 2026 earlier this year. Overall, Marta's national team career has spanned more than 20 years. She's played in 204 games for Brazil, scoring 119 goals. She's played in six World Cups and six Olympics. Brazil's best finish at the World Cup was runner-up in 2007. The nation has reached the Olympic final three times, including in Paris, but a gold medal has remained out of reach. Marta started in Brazil's Copa América opener, a 2-0 victory over Venezuela, then came off the bench in a 6-0 win over Bolivia. Next up is a match against Paraguay on Tuesday. She has said she'll accept any role that Elias gives her, realizing that Brazil has a host talented young players, including 25-year-old Kerolin, who plays professionally for Manchester City, and 22-year-old Luany, who plays for Atlético Madrid. But there's also an elephant in the room: The Women's World Cup is coming to Marta's home country in 2027. Previously, Marta said she didn't see herself playing in it — she'd be 41 — but she hasn't exactly ruled out the possibility either. Jaroslav Halak announces retirement from NHL after 17 seasons

Halak, 40, last played a game on April 13, 2023, with the New York Rangers. He then spent time with the Carolina Hurricanes early in the 2023-24 season on a professional tryout but was released before competing in a game. 'Last year I completed summer training ... but when nothing came of it, I told myself it was pointless. After that I didn't even try anymore,' Halak told Slovakia's Dennik Sport, per a translation. 'I'm officially ending my career. I would like to thank my family, friends, fans and especially my wife Petra, who has been by my side my entire career.' A two-time William M. Jennings Trophy Award winner as the goalie on the team that allowed the fewest goals in a season, Halak posted a 295-189-69 record with 53 shutouts, a 2.50 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 581 career games (555 starts). He has played with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Rangers. 'It's been two years and I've come to terms with not reaching 300 (wins),' Halak said. 'Looking back on my career, it's been a good one. It would have been nicer with 300 wins, but I'll be happy with 295.' Halak also played for his native Slovakia at the Olympics in 2010 and 2014 and guided Team Europe to the championship game at the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

‘Young lion' Daniel Dubois faces unbeaten Oleksandr Usyk in heavyweight title showdown at Wembley
LONDON (AP) — There are many reasons why Oleksandr Usyk should beat Daniel Dubois and leave Wembley Stadium as the undisputed world heavyweight champion on Saturday night. The Ukrainian is undefeated as a professional, including a stoppage of Dubois two years ago, and hasn't lost any bout in 16 years. Usyk feasts on British fighters. He dethroned Anthony Joshua at a packed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021. He won a gold medal at the London Olympics. London native Dubois insists things will be different this time and that his three recent knockout victories — most impressively a demolition of Joshua last September at Wembley — prove that he's the guy who can do what no other professional has done: beat Usyk. 'I'm just on a different level now,' the 27-year-old Dubois said Thursday. 'I'm ready to go through whatever I need to on Saturday and get those belts.' An expected crowd of 90,000 will be on hand when Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) puts his WBA, WBC and WBO titles on the line. He'll try to win Dubois' IBF belt to become a two-time undisputed world heavyweight champion. Lennox Lewis was the last British heavyweight to hold every major belt — accomplishing the feat in November 1999. Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) was outmatched by Usyk in their first fight, unable to defend the Ukrainian southpaw's jab and failing to land many power punches that night in Wroclaw, Poland in August 2023. Dubois sent Usyk to the canvas in the fifth round but his punch was ruled a low blow. A straight right ended Dubois' evening in the ninth. The last fighter to beat Usyk was Russia's Egor Mekhontsev in September 2009 at the amateur world championships. Usyk shrugged off chatter that he's getting too old to maintain success. 'I respect this guy, this young guy,' Usyk said. 'This guy is motivated, but I am too. I'm not an old guy, 38 is not old.' Beating up British boxers Usyk's past six fights have been against British opponents — all victories: the last two against Tyson Fury; the Dubois stoppage; consecutive wins over Anthony Joshua; and before that Zimbabwe-born British boxer Derek Chisora. Only one of his fights as a heavyweight involved a non-British opponent — that was in his debut in the division in October 2019 against Chazz Witherspoon of the United States. 'I'm happy to be here again,' Usyk said Thursday at Wembley. He has good reason to be. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games. Four years prior in Liverpool, he was crowned amateur European champion in the light heavyweight category. In his last fight at the cruiserweight level, Usyk knocked out Liverpool's Tony Bellew in Manchester. He beat Chisora at Wembley Arena in 2020. Joseph Parker gives his analysis Joseph Parker said he would approach Usyk the way Chisora did five years ago, by putting pressure on the Ukrainian and using more combinations. 'I feel like this fight depends on how Dubois shows up,' Parker said after Thursday's press conference. 'In the last three fights we've seen (him) a lot more confident within himself and what he's been able to do in the ring.' Dubois was scheduled to make a title defense against Parker in February but he backed out at the last minute citing an illness. Dubois' father the 'architect' Dubois is still heavily influenced by his father, Stanley, who also goes by Dave and guides his son's career. His dad believed in home-schooling his children, including Caroline Dubois, herself a world champion boxer. Caroline Dubois ventured away from her father's management almost two years ago, telling The Associated Press in January that 'It was either that or I probably would have ended up stopping boxing and just be in a really bad mental place.' Riz Khan, Daniel Dubois' manager, said his fighter's success since the loss to Usyk is largely down to one person. 'The architect behind the resurgence has clearly been his father, Stan Dubois, who has meticulously hand-picked every single individual, whether it's the coaching team, whether it's the medics, whether it's from a management point of view, so we have all the credentials to support Daniel in the background,' Khan said. Dubois' attempts at trash talking seem more like checking a box rather than natural bravado, like when he cracked a smile after yelling ' And the new! ' in Usyk's face this week. Earlier, there was also a slow-motion shove of Usyk that lacked conviction. Still, he's the same dude he was in the buildup to the Joshua fight, and that was a spectacular success for Dubois.
