In one case, a resident spat at staff and threatened to kill them before gardaí were called.
In another, a resident was arrested after assaulting staff and threatening them with a hammer. Dirty needles, drug use and theft are also recorded among the nearly 200 incidents reported at the Citywest asylum centre in the last six months. Pic: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin
The centre has been the location for a multitude of violent incidents since January 1 this year.
Between Citywest and another centre in Dún Laoghaire, there have been numerous threats and assaults to staff and other asylum seekers.
Information released to Extra.ie under Freedom of Information legislation, shows how violence and illegal activity is still plaguing the Citywest campus two years on from a mass brawl which left five people hospitalised. Pic: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin
In the last six months alone, 20 assaults have been logged by Citywest staff.
Some of the reports do not specify whether an incident happened in Citywest or Dún Laoghaire.
Just one part of the report, written about incidents that happened in February, March and April includes: 'aggressive threats towards staff; stabbing/self harm; aggressive behaviour towards staff; drinking alcohol/aggressive and abusive behaviour towards staff; physical altercation; physical altercation/aggressive behaviour to staff'; assault/aggressive behaviour/smoking inside/blocking fire exit; altercation between two residents; altercation between two residents; serious altercation between residents; assault/aggressive behaviour, smoking inside; assault of staff members/aggressive behaviour/intimidation/abusive towards residents/hammer/arrested; aggressive behaviour/assault/abusive towards staff.' On February 22, three reports record: 'aggressive and assault towards staff and residents/spitting at staff/threat of life/arrest.'
Other worrying reports logged by staff at the Citywest campus include how one resident was discovered with a knife.
In total, there have been 193 incidents logged by staff at the Citywest centre between January 1 and June 30 this year.
Some of these include petty offences such as the 'theft of €20' and the 'theft of trousers'. Other items stolen at the campus include power banks, prayer mats, shoes and headphones.
However, the incidents include evidence of hard drug taking with a used needle discovered in the toilets of the centre on May 1 this year.
There are also three different incidents which have been redacted by the Department of Justice included in the total.
However, they all mentioned how gardaí were required to investigate.
There were also over a dozen incidences of trespass at Citywest. On one occasion, staff reported eggs being thrown at residents by people who had illegally made their way onto the campus near Saggart.
The presence of cannabis at the Citywest site was also recorded on several occasions, according to the documents released to us. This resulted in the drugs being confiscated and destroyed, records showed.
It emerged in June that the Citywest campus, which was being rented by the Government to house refugees, was being bought by the Government and will remain as an accommodation centre for over 2,300 people seeking asylum while their applications are processed.
The Government confirmed it signed off on the €148.2 million deal to acquire the Citywest Hotel and Convention Centre in southwest Dublin.
The announcement sparked concern among local residents. Protesters from Saggart gathered outside Leinster House to oppose the purchase, citing fears over the loss of public access to the hotel complex and increased strain on local services.
Junior Minister Colm Brophy addressed the concerns, saying engagement with local representatives would be prioritised to ensure transparency and communication with the community.
'Very importantly, the purchase of Citywest will not result in any immediate increase in numbers,' he said.
At the protest following news of the Government's purchase of the site, protesters repeatedly said the area can not support so many people for a long period.
Bernie Cronin, from Clondalkin, said 200 people met two weeks ago where concerns were raised about the Government plan to buy Citywest Hotel.
Mr Cronin, who is a former member of Fine Gael and a current member of Independent Ireland, said it has been the area's 'greatest amenity' for 40 years.
'If the Government buys it, it will never come back to the people of Saggart and the surrounding districts as the superb and magnificent luxury hotel it has been for 40 years,' he said.
He said locals have 'no concern' about its current use as an IPAS centre for housing asylum seekers.
Mr Cronin said there have been concerns by the group others could 'hijack what we are trying to do'.
Asked about 'outside elements' at the protest, Mr Cronin said: 'They don't help us and I know that's a concern.'
'It's not a question about race, it's about space,' Saggart resident Susan Murphy said.
The Justice Minister said there are no immediate plans to increase capacity at the site.
The Department of Justice, in a statement said it is also in ongoing discussions to ensure the leisure centre on the site remains open to the public following the purchase. The leisure centre has approximately 3,000 members and is a valuable amenity for the local community.

Six-year-old Waterford girl attacked by teen girls and boys
The mother of a six-year-old girl who was the victim of a racist assault this week has said the garda response – in which she was effectively blamed for taking her eye off the children – showed they are 'not worried about what will happen to a mother and two kids'. Anupa Achuthan told her young daughter Nia was physically attacked and racially abused by a group of teenagers while she played outside her home on Monday evening, in a housing estate on the outskirts of Waterford city. The HSE nurse had been supervising her daughter and some other young children as they played out the front of her home, when she popped inside to prepare food for her 10-month-old son. Nia Achuthan was set upon by a gang of teenagers as she played outside her home. Pic: Michael Chester 'After two or three minutes, the kids knocked on the door very heavily, and when I opened it, they were so scared and I saw Nia was crying a lot,' she recalled. 'I was seeing her so upset for the first time. She was so shocked, so scared. She was crying, and there was a little bit of redness on her cheek as well.' Nia was too distraught to explain what had happened, but other children told Ms Achuthan a 'gang of five or six' boys and girls aged around 12 to 14 had 'hit her on the private parts with the bicycle, punched her right cheek, pulled her hair, and twisted her head'. Anupa Achuthan with her daughter Nia. Pic: Michael Chester 'They said they were very abusive. They know we are originally from India, so they said I am very dirty, they said F-words to her and: 'Go back to India.'' The teenagers returned several times and were 'enjoying' staring Ms Achuthan down as the children cried, she said. With her husband still at work at a nursing home, she called gardaí. The Achuthans in their Waterford home. Pic: Michael Chester Ms Achuthan, who became an Irish citizen last year, said she appreciates gardaí came but claimed she 'didn't get a compassionate response from them'. 'They said they don't know who they are, so they can't take any action. I said they are living in the same estate and the kids know them, so if we find out the house number, will you at least tell this to their parents? 'But they didn't respond. The garda was really silent at that time. That was shocking for me. Anupa Achuthan with her daughter Nia. Pic: Michael Chester 'They said this happened just because I didn't supervise the kid. That was the reason. 'I said I never expected this would happen – she was just in front of my house playing with other kids very safely and I just popped in to feed my second baby. There were no follow-up calls to check on their well-being that night either.' She said when she called to the garda station the next day, she was told the incident had not been recorded. Nia Achuthan. Pic: Michael Chester However, the family said they later discovered the incident had been logged during a follow-up call to the garda station. A garda spokesperson confirmed gardaí 'responded to a report of an alleged assault in the Kilbarry area of Waterford city on the evening of Monday, August 4, 2025. Investigations are ongoing. No further details are available at this time.' The spokesperson added: 'We would like to reassure those of an ethnic or minority background that we are here to keep you safe.'

Notorious double rapist Simon McGinley vanishes after his release from prison
Notorious double rapist Simon McGinley has vanished following his release from prison - and has failed to check in with gardai in recent weeks as required, we can exclusively reveal. This is now leading to fears for the safety of women. Evil Simon McGinley, 52, walked free from the Midlands Prison at the end of June after completing a sentence he received last year for breaching the conditions of the Sex Offenders Act. The sicko sex fiend, who is subject to garda monitoring since his release from prison as he has been described as a dangerous individual, was in behind bars since August 2023 after he was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court for the breaches. As part of his release conditions, he is under the supervision of the Probation Service for the next 12 years. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for the rest of his life. But sources tell us that he has gone off the garda radar in the past few weeks - and a summons has been obtained by gardai to bring him back to court. 'He hasn't been seen by gardai nor the Probation Services in the past few weeks which is a huge worry as he is required to check in with gardai and the Probation Services as part of the conditions of the Sex Offenders Act,' a source said, adding: 'He's basically on the loose as no-one in authority knows where he is now based.' At the beginning of July Irish Mirror managed to photograph McGinley out and about for the first time after his release from prison after we tracked him down in Dundalk, Co Louth. Our exclusive photos showed the cowardly double rapist, dressed in a striped t-shirt, a grey zip up jumper and black trousers and carrying a mobile phone and blue disposable vape last month. Simon McGinley pictured on a mobile phone (Image: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin) Simon McGinley gets out of the back of a white, UK-registered van in Dundalk (Image: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin) In October 2022 the sex beast was released from Arbour Hill Prison, having served 13 years behind bars of an overall 21-year sentence for the brutal and shocking rape of an 85-year-old woman in her Co Monaghan home in 2008. A drunken McGinley had broken into the elderly woman's home and raped her repeatedly during the night and put his hand over her mouth. The elderly woman had been unfit to give evidence during the trial due to worsening dementia. But, a statement she had given at a previous district court hearing was read to the jury. The evil rapist was previously sentenced to 12 years in 1998 after pleading guilty to raping a 13-year-old girl in August 1997 — in a controversy known as the 'C Case.' The young girl at the centre of the infamous 'C Case' against him was involved in a legal battle over whether she was allowed to travel to the UK to have an abortion. Speaking out in 2009, the victim told RTE Radio how the brutal attack left her pregnant and forced her into a succession of care homes and caught at the centre of an infamous legal battle over her right to have an abortion. 'He ruined my life and I am still coming to terms with that. My life is destroyed,' said the woman. 'I never got schooling or anything like that. I don't know how many times I tried to kill myself but I have a little five-year-old son now so he keeps me going.' Dangerous rapist McGinley has also previously been compared to infamous beast Larry Murphy and is considered a highly volatile sexual predator. And he was once deemed a person of interest in the case of missing JoJo Dullard. During his trial in 2009 for the rape of the elderly woman, Mr Justice Birmingham said he could find no mitigating circumstances. 'Rape is always a serious offence but within the spectrum of rapes this, in my view, is at the top of the upper end. This case is just about as bad as it gets,' he said. Fashion designer found dead on yacht was planning to marry
The young Irish fashion designer found dead on a boat moored at one of New York's most exclusive sailing clubs was planning to marry her American boyfriend, has learned. A source close to the family of tragic entrepreneur Martha Nolan O'Slatarra also revealed the Carlow woman spoke to the man she had hoped to spend the rest of her life with just moments before her mysterious death. During the course of what proved to be the last phone call she would make, Martha, 33, assured her boyfriend she was about to head home. Martha Nolan-O'Slattara. Pic: Facebook But within minutes, she was found unconscious and later declared dead by medics who responded to a 911 call. The source told Extra: 'Martha and her boyfriend went to Ireland at Christmas. He met her family and getting married would have been the next step. 'It was just her and the boat owner on the boat. She phoned her boyfriend and she told him she was just about to be picked up by an Uber. 'There is such a short timeline between when she made the call and when the 911 call was made.' These crucial minutes between the two phone calls, made around midnight last Tuesday, are at the centre of a police investigation. Martha died while on a 27ft boat called Ripple and the other person on board was the owner of the 25-year-old vessel. Pic: Martha Nolan/TikTok Aged in his early 60s, it is believed he is the main eyewitnesses reportedly described running naked along the jetty shouting for help. People staying on nearby boats claimed the man threw a container of suntan lotion at one of his neighbours' yachts in a desperate bid to wake them up. Montauk is at the furthest end of Long Island, New York. Located in the upmarket Hamptons. The town has become the summer playground of the rich and famous. Many millionaire Wall Street brokers relocate there with their families to escape the blazing heat and humidity of New York's summer. According to locals, the owner of the boat on which Martha died has two vessels moored side by side at Montauk Yacht Club. He has previously come to the attention of local police when he was given a ticket for 'failure to display registration numbers'. Given the considerable age gap between them, Martha's friends are mystified as to why she was alone with the boat owner so late last Tuesday night. One friend Extra: 'He would be 60 or so years old, and Martha recently told a friend he had asked to meet her. 'But it does not make sense why she was alone with him or why he was naked. 'Martha's boyfriend was away on a work trip last weekend. Martha was very happy with her boyfriend, and she was very in love with her boyfriend.' Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra. Pic: TikTok Another pal added: 'Martha was a bright light and that light has been sniffed out. 'She has a lot of good friends, and all her friends want to get answers and to help so that she doesn't become just another statistic. We all loved her deeply.' Although many questions remain unanswered as to the tragic sequence of events leading up to Martha's death, what is known is that a 911 call was made just after midnight on Tuesday. At that stage, the young businesswoman was unconscious. The emergency call was not made by the boat owner, but by a Good Samaritan who had tried to help save Martha's life by giving her CPR. But by the time paramedics arrived, it was already too late and Martha was declared dead shortly afterwards. According to Suffolk County Police, an initial post-mortem examination was 'inconclusive' but 'did not show evidence of violence'. However, police are hopeful that further tests by the Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of death, which will determine the direction of the investigation. These include the results of toxicology tests. In normal circumstances, it can take several weeks for these results to be finalised. But it is believed these may be fast-tracked given the unusual circumstances surrounding the young Irish woman's death. A police source told Extra: 'This is an investigation into an unnatural death and the Medical Examiner's Office will determine what course the investigation will take. Martha was a very vibrant young woman who had the world at her feet. 'Usually it can take several weeks for these test results to become known but I would think in this case things will be ramped up and they could be available in two weeks. 'Detectives will be looking at everyone she was involved with that night. They'll be looking at who she was socialising with, who made the 911 call, who heard the screams. 'All of these people will be interviewed, and the best way to do that is to is to interview them separately.' Martha Nolan-O'Slattara. Pic: Dylan Grace / Instagram Martha emigrated from her native Carlow to the US after graduating with a Master's Degree in Digital Marketing from UCD's Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at the age of 26. Shortly afterwards, she set about launching her own luxury swim wear label, East X East, in New York. Through sheer hard work and determination, it appears the young Irish entrepreneur succeeded in a highly competitive business. Earlier this summer, she secured a pop-up shop position at Gurney's, regarded as one of the most exclusive shops in the Hamptons. Despite her business success, Martha endured some personal heartache along the way too. Her marriage to businessman Sam Ryan failed, with the couple going their separate ways. Although their divorce was in the process of being finalised, according to friends, her ex-husband is devastated by Martha's death. Contacted last night, Mr Ryan said: 'No comment. Thank you.' Martha's body was released by the Medical Examiner's Office on Thursday and her family are due to travel to New York over the coming days. There, they will await the outcome of the further autopsy and toxicology tests before bringing her remains home for burial. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is assisting the family with bringing Martha's remains home. Earlier this week, Martha's mother Elma Nolan revealed the shocking moment her youngest daughter told her that her sister was dead. Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra. Pic: TikTok 'I feel numb and in shock. My younger daughter Jacqui arrived in on Tuesday night and she was crying and shaking,' she told the Irish Independent. 'She said, 'I have terrible news… Martha's dead.' I don't know what happened to my daughter. We weren't told anything.' One of Martha's friends this weekend expressed frustration at the lack of official information about the circumstances surrounding her death. 'Something is not right. [The NYPD] aren't saying anything and sadly I don't know any details about that night,' they told Extra. The Irish Central news website reported that Martha's remains were expected to be released to her family yesterday. It also said the young Irishwoman last spoke to her mother on July 29, about plans to come home to Carlow this week. 'She wanted to know if I would be around to pick her up,' she is quoted as saying. 'It was a very quick call because she is so busy, but that's the last time we spoke.'
