Obsidian Entertainment has big ambitions for Grounded 2's small world

Engadget16-06-2025
Obsidian Entertainment has been an incredibly versatile game developer over the years, even venturing outside its RPG comfort zone with the original Grounded . As a survival adventure game where you're shrunken down and explore the hidden, vast world of a backyard, it became a well-loved hit, and it evolved even further throughout its early access period. But now, the developers have big plans for Grounded 2 , which has new features and a larger scope that was too big for the original to contain.
Shortly after the reveal during the recent Xbox Games Showcase alongside Summer Game Fest 2025, I got to play the opening of the sequel, which sees the familiar crew of teenage scavengers, now a little older and wiser, shrunken down once again to survive a new small world hidden in the town's park. Even as a new iteration of a familiar premise, which is essentially the survival gameplay of Rust by way of the whimsical Honey, I Shrunk the Kids , Grounded 2 is already showing some promise as the bigger and better sequel. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so.
Grounded 2 , which will also launch in early access, already feels like a bigger game, even from the confines of the tutorial zone. For starters, there's a larger focus on building up the experience of the four teenage scavengers and how they fit into the larger story. It's not quite Yellowjackets when it comes to teen drama, but the crew exploring the small world of the park have colorful language and quips at their disposal. There's a generally stronger sense of personality in Grounded 2 , which is bolstered by some more character-driven writing and opportunities to take in the lore of the company responsible for the experiments in town.
The experience of playing Grounded 2 , much like the original and other survival games, is all about gathering resources from the land and acquiring knowledge to stay alive. Along with collecting materials to build weapons, armor and structures, you'll also have to keep your characters fed and hydrated. You'll also need to defend yourself against the various critters roaming about, such as the ants and the spiders. Also returning is the arachnophobia accessibility option to make them appear less disturbing for players. Thankfully, you can now use a dodge to avoid attacks – a first for the series – and combat is generally more responsive and fair.
Grounded 2 feels like a more well-rounded and refined take on the original, which is a solid game in its own right. One great addition that I got to play with was the new ant mount, or buggy, as the devs call it. You'll be able to ride on top of a friendly ant that can attack enemies, move faster throughout the world, and even collect material far more quickly than the human scavengers.
Shortly after my hands-on experience, I sat in on a roundtable discussion with game director Chris Parker and producer Miles Winzeler from Obsidian Entertainment, who explained how early access feedback from players helped bring the game to its current state. In order to fully implement their vision for Grounded, though, they would need a new game.
"Almost everything in Grounded 2 comes from feedback from the community that we had gathered from the first game," Parker said. "We had to look at what was important to work on with the sequel. People always want more stuff to do. They wanted to have the buggies, which was a huge one and our number one most requested feature from out the gate on Grounded 1 . We then had to work on new creatures, armor and weapons, among other things. How can we further develop our progression systems? So those were all the things that we took on from the beginning for Grounded 2 ."
Grounded 2 felt like a more fully realized game, which leveraged years of work on the original. Along with a more developed story campaign focusing on helping the kids survive the portion of Brookhollow Park they have to explore – which is more than three times the size of the original's map – The game will also launch with creative mode, which was a popular feature that let players focus on exploring and building up structures at their leisure.
"We're always trying to challenge scale and how we can create a sense of awe and mystery by having something that's supposed to be normal but is now this gigantic thing," Parker said. "That's always the fun when making this game."
I really took to the added scope of Grounded 2 . Not just as a shrunken person trapped on the grounds of a park but also for the new features and ideas at work for the sequel. With the game coming out in July for early access, Grounded 2 has already got me invested in making a return visit to this small world with big ambitions.
Grounded 2 will release in early access on July 29 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available for Game Pass subscribers.

The Outer Worlds 2 Walks Back $80 Price, Now Launching at $70

The Outer Worlds 2 from Obsidian Entertainment was set to be the third game to follow the trend started by Mario Kart World of having a launch price of $80. Instead, it's another game that saw a price reduction after the initial announcement. Last month, The Outer Worlds 2 was one of the big titles shown at the Xbox Games Showcase and even had its own dedicated show after the event. Obisidan revealed the release date of Oct. 29 and the hefty price tag of $80, but the developer has since changed its mind, deciding to go to the standard price of $70 for AAA games. "We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. As an organization devoted to making sure that corporations do not go unfettered, we at the Earth Directorate have worked with [REDACTED] to revise the price of The Outer Worlds 2," the developer said in a Bluesky post Wednesday. [image or embed] — Obsidian (@ July 23, 2025 at 10:02 AM The $80 price tag for new games caused quite an uproar when Nintendo revealed the pricing for Mario Kart World for the Switch 2 in April. There were questions on whether this was company greed or maybe a side effect of President Donald Trump's tariffs. In May, Borderlands 4 from Gearbox Entertainment followed suit with the $80 price point after it was announced to be coming to the Switch 2. Publisher 2K Games updated the price to $70 last month. Whether the outrage over the $80 price was too much for 2K Games and Obsidian Entertainment is debatable, but the price of games will have to increase again across the board. It's just a matter of when. The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI from Rockstar Games is one title that some experts are expecting not only to surpass the $80 price tag but to jump to possibly $100. The open-world crime game was set to release this year but it has since been pushed to May 2026. GTA 6 has a reported budget of more than $1 billion, which could make a higher price tag necessary to recoup the cost of development.

A Downtown Newcomer Is the Sparkly French Soiree D.C. Needs Right Now

D.C.'s newest French-grounded destination with a c'est la vie mentality and knack for nightlife opens its swanky doors on Tuesday, July 29. Barbouzard – which means 'secret agent' in French – unites a lauded chef's longstanding recipes, bespoke music, and late-night aspirations at the prominent downtown corner of 17th and K Street NW. In short, the restaurant is 'rooted in the elegance of the Riviera' and rounded out by the rest of the vast Mediterranean coast, says co-owner Nasr El Hage. Also informing the menu: celebrated French American chef and partner Cedric Maupillier, who shuttered his award-winning Shaw staple Convivial last December. Hage, a local real estate exec with Lebanese roots, teamed up with fellow investor Nellie Elana Gebrail and Dany Abi-Najm (whose family is of Lebanese Taverna fame) on the anticipated project (1700 K Street NW). Caviar service at Barbouzard. Scott Suchman As luck would have it, El Hage and Maupillier met exactly one year prior to Barbouzard's friends-and-family preview party on Bastille Day 2025 this month. Hitting it off immediately, El Hage realized that Maupillier was the Gallic missing piece to his restaurant-in-planning. 'Nasr came to see me at Convivial while I was looking for new opportunities,' Maupillier recalls. 'I was about to go on vacation back home to France when he started talking about the Riviera, where I was born.' As El Hage described his vision, Maupillier was entranced, and signed on soon after. Barbouzard features not only fine French dining, which D.C. now has in droves, but also strives to overcome the challenges of uniting food, ambiance, and socialization all in one space. 'I wanted a place that closes late on weekends, so that the good time continues after dinner, to dress up and go out, but not quite nightlife,' says El Hage. 'You can have a great time at 8 p.m. or 12 a.m.' Barbouzard's mod design features glassy walls of wine. Scott Suchman Maupillier showcases his South of France education and upbringing across Barbouzard's plates. The menu 'draws from the Riviera but also every nice place in the Mediterranean that has sun, olive trees, thyme, rosemary, and lavender,' he added, even 'where you can hear the cicadas chirp.' The menu features grilled fish and seafood, plenty of vegetable dishes, and regional specialties, along with a short list of meats, steak-frites, and pasta. Highlights include the heady broth-based Bouillabaisse Marseillaise, a dover sole served Riviera style, a vegan Bolognese, and Maupillier's own must-have favorite: escargot. 'I tried frogs; that didn't work well – but Americans love escargot,' he says. Escargot is served in its shell at Barbouzard. Scott Suchman Drawing from other Mediterranean landscapes, the moules gratinee gets heat from 'nduja spice and Calabrian sausage from Italy; a roasted cauliflower receives a shower of Middle Eastern za'atar on a tahini sauce bath. El Nasr ensured that the menu also included some items for a touch of luxe. See: foie gras 'opera'; caviar service; and a pair of baller shellfish towers. Le Petit is $110 and Le Grand goes for $240, with oysters, littleneck clams, mussels, lobster, shrimp, Tahitian tuna, and hamachi crudo. The bar highlights French spirits, aperitifs, and house infusions, with fancy drinks like, yes, the Caviar Martini, plus a Provence Negroni for a lighter take on the classic. The bottled list includes a lengthy count of Champagnes and (400-plus) wines focused on French coastal regions that 'tell the story of the sea and French country,' says El Hage. Cocktails and wines can be ordered in the restaurant or the semi-private bubbly lounge. The opulent seafood tower at Barbouzard. Scott Suchman Mediterranean fish at Barbouzard. Scott Suchman Barbouzard completely reimagines the 6,493-square-foot space that formerly housed Kellari Taverna, D.C.'s Greek restaurant that rose to popularity in the early aughts (and closed last year). The look is meant to capture France's posh seaside spirit, with light oak, marble, hand-blown glass chandeliers, and gilded accents. The various booths, alcoves, bar spaces, and leafy veranda seats offer areas for lively postprandial conversation. The restaurant is equipped with a Funktion-One sound system, a professional-grade audio setup that's a rare get for even a hot-ticketed club. In the very center of the restaurant sits a DJ booth and stage, as Barbouzard will host entertainment throughout the week, including live piano, sax, guitar, and violin performances for 'sexy, elevated' sounds, says El Hage. DJs come in on Thursdays to Saturdays. 'We want guests to feel things,' says El Hage. The goal of the restaurant, adds Maupillier, is 'l'art de vivre [the art of living], served daily.' A stylish dining nook speaks to the Riviera's Golden Age. Scott Suchman The open space sports crimson-colored booths and plenty of marble. The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer be Microsoft's first $80 Xbox game

Microsoft-owned developer Obsidian Entertainment is announcing a price drop for the The Outer Worlds 2 today. The game was originally supposed to debut at $79.99 in October, but it's now going back to the regular $69.99 Xbox game price. Microsoft announced earlier this year that it would be raising the price of new Xbox first-party games from $69.99 to $79.99, alongside increases to its consoles and controllers. The move to suddenly drop the price of The Outer Worlds 2 is a clear sign that preorders haven't gone too well and that gamers are rejecting Microsoft's initial move to $79.99 Xbox games. If you've already purchased the game then refunds will be handled by the Microsoft Store, Steam, PlayStation store or wherever you preordered The Outer Worlds 2. Other first-party Xbox games coming this holiday will also be sold at $69.99, instead of Microsoft's new $79.99 pricing. 'We're focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,' says an unnamed Xbox spokesperson in a statement to IGN. It will be interesting to see whether Microsoft continues to push its new Xbox game pricing in the new year, or whether this is a sign that it's fully rethinking the increase to $79.99.
